Hello movie lovers. Since we are just a few days away from the end of September and the beginning of October, or as I call it, the "Month of Horror". That's right people, I have prepared for fans of the genre a special section for this month that starts next week with pure horror movie reviews, including some classics and some not so classics that you will surely love. So, before we begin, today I will talk about one of the worst horror movies that have been produced in recent years. Despite being a success both at the box office (with a very low budget of $12 million and grossing up to over $180 million at the box office) and also critically, for a strange reason that even now I can't explain to myself, this movie is everything that was wrong with Hollywood two years ago.

The film was directed by Gerald Johnstone with a script written by Aleka Cooper and James Wan, who also participated in the production along with Jason Blum. It was distributed at the end of 2022 thanks to Universal Pictures, achieving both box office and critical success due to its mix of horror with comedy, but with an overly cheesy style. The film achieved internet popularity due to clips of the M3GAN character on social networks and the similarity it has with horror classics like "Chucky". In this post I'm not going to say the same thing that many people who have praised this film said, considering it as a "horror movie", but I will say what I think it really is: a failed attempt to mix science fiction with horror and black humor. Anyway, if you haven't seen this movie yet, I invite you to stay and see what I have to say.

Así es gente, tengo preparado para los fanáticos del género una sección especial para este mes que inicia la semana que viene con puras reseñas de películas de terror, entre ellas algunos clásicos y otros no tan clásicos que seguramente les va a encantar. Por eso, antes de empezar, el día de hoy les hablaré de una de las peores películas del género de terror que se han producido en estos últimos años. A pesar de haber sido un éxito tanto en taquilla (con un presupuesto muy bajo de 12 millones de dólares y una recaudación de hasta más de 180 millones de dólares en taquilla) como también en crítica, por una extraña razón que aún ahora no me explico, esta película es todo lo que estuvo mal en Hollywood hace dos años.

La película fue dirigida por Gerald Johnstone con un guión escrito por Aleka Cooper y James Wan, quien también participó en la producción junto con Jason Blum. Fue distribuida a finales del 2022 gracias a Universal Pictures, consiguiendo un éxito tanto en taquilla como en la crítica debido a su mezcla de terror con comedia, pero con un estilo demasiado cursi. Plot

In this film we meet Cady, an 8-year-old girl who lost her parents in a car accident, causing her to suffer from severe depression. Cady is sent to live with her aunt Gemma, who is a roboticist for a high-tech toy company called Funki, from Seattle. Gemma uses the company's resources to create a new model called M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android), a child-sized robotic doll with artificial intelligence to become a great companion for children. After several failed attempts, Gemma gets the motivation thanks to Cady, who sees her interacting with a robot she has at home. Upon successfully activating M3GAN, Gemma presents it to her niece as a test. Upon effectively connecting, M3GAN becomes her caregiver and parental role model, using whatever resources or methods she has at her disposal to protect Cady from any danger that comes her way, even if she has to take someone's life.

En esta película conocemos a Cady, una niña de 8 años que perdió a sus padres en un accidente automovilístico, causándole una fuerte depresión. Cady es enviada a vivir con su tía Gemma, quien es una robótica de una compañía de juguetes de alta tecnología llamada Funki, de Seattle. Gemma utiliza los recursos de la compañía para crear un nuevo modelo llamado M3GAN (Modelo 3 Generativo de Android), un muñeco robótico de tamaño infantil con inteligencia artificial para convertirse en un gran compañero para los niños. Let's talk about what for me is the modern version of "Chucky". A movie that tries to combine the horror genre with science fiction and humor, resulting in the end in a humiliating festival of fun in the form of a cheesy and modern movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad movie, since the way it tells us a story (which we have seen before in other similar films) and dealing with psychological issues such as emotional dependence to technology and the substitution of a natural father figure to an artificial one is something that has to be given some merit. Also the construction of M3GAN's character, which conveys very well that unnatural and unfeeling feeling of a killing machine. But, maybe it's the humor or maybe it's the bizarre and even absurd way of murder that makes it a film lacking in horror, at least for me.

Hablemos de la que para mí es la versión moderna de “Chucky”. Una película que intenta combinar el género del terror con la ciencia ficción y el humor, resultando al final un festival humillante de diversión en forma de película cursi y moderna. No me malinterpreten, no estoy diciendo que es una mala película, ya que la forma en la que nos cuenta una historia (que ya hemos visto antes en otras cintas similares) y de tratar temas psicológicos como la dependencia emocional a la tecnología y la sustitución de una figura paterna natural a una artificial es algo que hay que darle un cierto mérito. También la construcción del personaje de M3GAN, el cual transmite muy bien esa sensación antinatural y sin sentimiento de una máquina asesina. Pero, puede que sea el humor o puede que sea la forma tan extraña y hasta absurda de asesinar lo que la hace una película carente de terror, al menos para mí.

Instead of dedicating time to her to take care of her and keep her company while she accepts the loss and gradually adapts to her new life, he focuses on finishing his most ambitious project, which is M3GAN, a robot with artificial intelligence in the shape of a girl. What follows is the most expected: Cady, seeing the absence of her aunt, goes to M3GAN who introduces her as her new companion and asks her to never leave her alone, thus creating a very strong dependence on this machine that does not measure the moral limits of society in order to protect its new owner and best friend.

On the one hand, I like the way in which Cady's relationship with M3GAN develops until she becomes something or someone indispensable for her, even letting herself be influenced by this machine. The plot in itself may be attention-grabbing, but the story at the end leaves you with a somewhat negative opinion of all the characters, starting with Gemma. Anyway, if its intention was to give a clear message of the consequences of always depending on technology and to start being more aware of feelings and intra-family human relationships, then it succeeded, but in a somewhat pathetic way, to be honest. The murder scenes are the most entertaining thing about this movie, to be honest, and I'm not saying that because they are terrifying. You can feel at the end that humorous message that they try to convey with respect to the references that this film has with "Chucky", or with the way of seeing M3GAN as a murder weapon and "the scariest thing" that can be found today.

Hablemos de la historia la cual nos introduce a Cady, una niña de 8 años que perdió a sus padres y que tiene que enfrentar el fuerte duelo después con el cuidado de su tía, Gemma, una mujer que ama más su trabajo de robótica que a su propia familia en esta etapa tan fuerte de su vida. En vez de dedicarle tiempo a ella para cuidarla y hacerle compañía mientras ella se acepta la pérdida y se acopla poco a poco a su nueva vida, lo que se le ocurre es enfocarse en terminar su proyecto más ambicioso que es M3GAN, un robot con inteligencia artificial con forma de niña. Lo que sigue es lo más esperado: Cady, al ver la ausencia de su tía, acude a M3GAN quien la presenta como su nueva compañera y le pide que no la deje sola nunca, creando así una muy fuerte dependencia a esta máquina que no mide los límites morales de la sociedad con tal de proteger a su nueva dueña y mejor amiga.

Por un lado me agrada la forma en la que esta relación que tiene Cady con M3GAN se va desarrollando hasta convertirse en algo o alguien indispensable para ella, dejándose influenciar inclusive de esta máquina. La trama en sí puede que llame la atención, pero la historia al final te deja con una opinión un tanto negativa de todos los personajes, empezando por Gemma. En fin, si su intención era dar un mensaje claro de las consecuencias de depender siempre de la tecnología y empezar a tener más conciencia en los sentimientos y las relaciones humanas intrafamiliares, entonces lo logró, pero de una forma un tanto patética, la verdad. Las escenas de asesinatos son lo más entretenido que tiene esta película, la verdad, y no lo digo porque sean aterradoras. Se puede sentir al final ese mensaje humorístico que intentan transmitir con respeto a las referencias que tiene esta película con “Chucky”, o con la forma de ver a M3GAN como un arma asesina y “lo más aterrador” que se puede encontrar en la actualidad.

As for the production, I do not deny that despite having very little budget, they have excelled very well in producing a film with a dark and disturbing tone. The shots, the scenes, the sound effects, the scripts, the use of silences, the shadows and the places they are in transmit that touch of terror and suspense they were looking for. However, in the third act it is already felt that everything goes down the toilet when they add scenes of dances and jokes with a black humor. Perhaps the same way of imitating and constructing a story that reminds us of classics like "Chuchy" but with artificially intelligent robots is what made this film so successful. In short, much can be criticized and bad-mouthed about this film now, but we must remember that the same thing happened at the time with the famous demonic doll of the 80s and now it has achieved a huge franchise, besides being an influential part of popular culture. The same can be said of this film, but in the end it is not a horror movie, at least not for me.

Personally, I give it a 6/10 rating as far as the horror/sci-fi genre is concerned.

En cuanto a la producción, no niego que a pesar de tener muy poco presupuesto, se han destacado muy bien en producir una película con un tono oscuro y perturbador. Las tomas, las escenas, los efectos de sonido, los guiones, el uso de los silencios, las sombras y los lugares en los que se encuentran transmiten ese toque de terror y suspenso que buscaban. Sin embargo, en el tercer acto ya se siente que todo se va al escusado cuando agregan escenas de bailes y chistes con un humor negro. Tal vez y la misma forma de imitar y construir una historia que nos recuerda a clásicos como “Chuchy” pero con robots con inteligencia artificial es lo que consiguió el éxito que extrañamente tiene esta película. En fin, mucho se le puede llegar a criticar y hablar mal de esta cinta ahora, pero hay que recordar que lo mismo sucedió en su momento con el famoso muñeco endemoniado de los años 80s y ahora ha conseguido una enorme franquicia, además de ser parte influyente de la cultura popular. Lo mismo se puede decir de esta cinta, pero al final no es una película de terror, al menos no para mí.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 6/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror y la ciencia ficción.
