Plot

The film opens with what appears to be a spacecraft coming as close to earth as possible and then launching an object that will land on it. Right after that we meet a group of U.S. special forces arriving by helicopter off the coast of Central America. This team is led by a war veteran named Major Alan "Dutch" Schaeffer. They are tasked with rescuing a supposed presidential cabinet minister who has been kidnapped by a dangerous group of guerrillas. The Major meets his old friend and former U.S. Special Forces partner, George Dillon, who is now a member of the CIA's Special Activities Division. The two of them, along with the other five members of the special team head into the dangerous jungle where they come across what appears to be the remains of three flayed bodies of men - one of them known to Dutch - hanging in a tree. Arriving at the guerrillas' location, they find that there are no survivors to rescue, which causes them to wipe out the entire base and the enemy, except for one woman who is taken hostage. On their way back to the "extraction point" the team travels a dangerous path, but it will get even worse as someone or something will be hunting them down one by one.

Unlike the Aliens franchise, I was one of those who have seen the Predator franchise movies since I was a kid and I still watch them to this day. Apart from the fact of how successful and iconic this first installment became, with the great Arnold Schwarzenegger as the protagonist, its hour and a half duration is for me one of the best that can be found in action and science fiction films of that time. While it is true that it is notorious the details and weak points it has, we must also recognize the level of production, the use of practical effects and the rough, raw and uncensored style that this film has. Being the first time we see and meet the iconic character known as Predator (being a somewhat meaningless title being more of a Hunter), we can notice how excellently done he is, in this case, as the main villain or antagonist. Unlike the Xenomorph, the Predator is more dangerous and intelligent than terrifying. Undoubtedly, this film is perfect for those fans of action, bullets, explosions and chases with military and aliens.

A diferencia de la franquicia de Aliens, fui de los que más ha visto las películas de la franquicia de Predator desde que era pequeño y aún al día de hoy las sigo viendo. They prepare to surprise it, to trap it somehow with traps of all kinds, but their attempts don't work and there are fewer and fewer of them. It's a complete manhunt and whatever is behind it all plays with them in various ways as they try to escape with their lives.

The first thing that pops into my head when remembering this movie is "a perfect action thriller, military and human-hunting aliens". That may be the most original description you can give to a movie, let alone one starring the same actor who plays the "Terminator" in his own film franchise. A perfect blend of science fiction with military action in pure savage style, lawless and uncensored. Apart from the creature that bears the name of the movie, the one who takes all the limelight from the beginning to the end is, of course, Arnold with his unique style of acting and playing a war veteran and leader of a special rescue team (one of the most armed and prepared teams I have seen so far). His way of leading and planning strategies and ways to take out the enemy, without even knowing exactly what they are up against for much of the movie is to be admired and is probably the only positive thing we can get from this cast.

Empecemos hablando de la historia, la cual como ya mencioné arriba, se centra en el Mayor Dutch y su equipo especial de rescate intentando salir del peligroso bosque de Centroamérica con vida. Sin embargo, al ver que hay algo por ahí cazandolos, estos empiezan a preocuparse, más aún cuando ven que dos de sus compañeros pierden la vida de una manera rápida e inexplicable. Sea lo que sea que anda por ahí no solo los caza de a uno por uno, sino que se lleva sus cuerpos para desollarlos y convertirlos en “trofeos” o algo parecido. Una criatura que parece camuflarse y esconderse muy bien en el bosque. En cambio, un miembro del equipo lo percibe desde el principio y le teme bastante, sintiendo que lo que sea que ande por ahí no es humano ni es de este mundo. Estos se preparan para sorprenderlo, atraparlo de algún modo con trampas de todo tipo, pero sus intentos no funcionan y cada vez son menos. Lo primero que se me pasa a la cabeza al recordar esta película es “un perfecto thriller de acción, militares y extraterrestres cazadores de humanos”. Puede que sea la descripción más original que se le pueda dar a una película y más a una donde lo protagoniza el mismo actor que hace de “Terminator” en su propia franquicia cinematográfica. Una mezcla perfecta de ciencia ficción con acción militar al puro estilo salvaje, sin leyes y sin censura. Aparte de la criatura que lleva el nombre de la película, el que se lleva todo el protagonismo desde el principio hasta el final es, cómo no, Arnold con su estilo único para actuar e interpretar a un veterano de guerra y líder de un equipo especial de rescate (de los equipos más armados y preparados que he visto hasta ahora). Su forma de liderar y planear estrategias y formas de acabar con el enemigo, sin siquiera saber bien a qué se enfrentan exactamente durante gran parte de la película es digno de admirar y seguramente es lo único positivo que podemos conseguir de este elenco.
