Plot
This film tells us what appears to be the continuation of a terrifying story of a typical japanese house that has suffered a terrible curse that is inherited by every member who moves in or has contact with the place. We begin by seeing a social worker who takes care of an elderly lady named Emma, the current owner of the house, who is unable to depend on herself. Yoko, the social worker, hears some strange noises in the attic of the house, goes upstairs and suddenly the face of a girl with asian features and all pale appears to her, who ends up choking her with her hands until she ends her life. Yoko, who curiously did not show up the next day, is later replaced. This replacement is Karen Davis, a blonde american girl who is new to this job and who will be in charge of taking care of Mrs. Emma, in this gloomy house. The apparitions, the sounds and the strange signs will not let Karen do her job calmly, who will later discover what happened in this house while she is gradually haunted by a horrible spirit that seeks to end her life.

With a similar feel to supernatural horror classics like "The Ring", this film is one of those American adaptations of Japanese works that have had more impact on this side of the world both for its dark story and for the large number of terrifying scenes and the technical and visual level it has to offer. La historia, si bien empieza de manera confusa, nos damos cuenta al ver las secuelas que es mucho más densa y aterradora de lo que uno cree al principio. But unlike this one, the main antagonist of this story has one of the darkest and most disturbing origins I have ever encountered.
This film is a viscerally visceral and terrifying display, with many supernatural overtones a bit of a thriller, of what is evil itself. To think that the origin of all this endless series of deaths and curses is due to a single victim of the evil that the same human being possesses within is something that makes your skin crawl and makes you think a lot. Torture, rape, humiliation, mockery, screams, murder... All this and more are part of the same evil, an evil that deformed and later became a terrible curse, one of the worst that can be found in the world of horror films. This is not only one more horror story with a haunted house, with apparitions and horrendous deaths of the bunch; but it is also one of those few curses that we can feel somewhat familiar with because of the same cruelty and hatred of the human being. We have all been victims of the same hatred, just in different ways, the question is, what would happen if a person dies being a victim of one of the most horrendous demonstrations of hatred that exist in history? Well, this film is the surreal result of what would happen.

Ya he mencionado en una ocasión anterior que la enorme variedad de historias aterradoras que tiene Japón para contar y que muchas veces han llegado a adaptarse en películas y series es tal que fácilmente pueden coronarse como uno de los países más ricos en cuanto a este tipo de historias de trata. Pero, en este caso en particular es curioso cómo la introducción de esta maldición y la forma en la que este llega a afectar a la gente es tan parecida a la de “The Ring”, la cual parece también ser una adaptación americana de una obra original japonesa. Pero, a diferencia de esta otra, el antagonista principal de esta historia tiene uno de los orígenes más oscuros y perturbadores que he conocido en mi vida.
Esta película es una muestra visualmente visceral y aterradora, con muchos tintes sobrenaturales un poco thriller, de lo que es el mismísimo mal. Pensar que el origen de toda esta serie interminable de muertes y maldiciones es por una sola víctima del mal que el mismo ser humano posee en su interior es algo que te eriza la piel y te hace pensar bastante. Torturas, violaciones, humillaciones, burlas, gritos, asesinatos… Todo esto y más son parte de un mismo mal, un mal que se deformó y llegó a convertirse luego en una terrible maldición, de las peores que se pueden encontrar en el mundo del cine de terror. Esta no solo es una historia más de terror con una casa embrujada, con apariciones y muertes horrendas del montón; sino que también es una de esas pocas maldiciones de las que nos podemos sentir un tanto familiarizados por la misma crueldad y odio del ser humano. Todos hemos sido víctimas del mismo odio, solo que de maneras diferentes, la cuestión es, ¿qué pasaría si una persona muere siendo una víctima de una de las demostraciones de odio más horrendas que existen en la historia? Pues esta película es el resultado surrealista de lo que sucedería.

On a technical level, there is not much to talk about, at least not in terms of special effects. With a budget of just under 10 million dollars, this film seems to have a mix of practical effects and CGI very well done. Most of the scenes of appearances and tense moments in the film look like they were done in the most practical way possible, although there are more than a scene or two that were literally done on a computer because of how unreal they look. Still, it's not bad at all, as each scene shows very well that level of horror that this movie has to offer: a curse that follows you wherever you are. As for the sound effects, it is another remarkable detail of this movie, as I myself am proof that the use of sounds and voices can mark a horror scene so much that you can carry it in your mind marked for years, as something difficult to forget. This, added to the soundtrack that has, which perfectly sets each scene with a level of suspense and fear that can be felt on the skin. Undoubtedly, this movie is one of those supernatural horror classics that you should not miss, if you haven't seen it yet. Although... if you saw "Scary Movie", you might easily recognize it (I hope not, truth be told).
Personally, I give it an 8/10 rating as far as the supernatural horror/suspense genre is concerned.

Sin duda alguna, esta película es de esos clásicos del terror sobrenatural que no debes de pasar por alto, si es que aún no la has visto. Aunque… si viste “Scary Movie”, puede que lo reconozcas fácilmente (espero que no, la verdad).
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror sobrenatural y suspenso.
