Directed and co-written by the great James Cameron, this film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. Being one of the first films that marked my childhood and pre-adolescence, I invite you to remember this great classic of the genre, machines and time travel.

Plot

The film opens with a chaotic, dark, post-apocalyptic vision of what was once Los Angeles. Then a message appears telling us that this is a near future in which, after a great nuclear catastrophe, machines took control and exterminated most of humanity. However, after a great battle between surviving humans and machines, the war continues in the past. It is here that we see the same city of Los Angeles, but in the 80s, where near an observatory a naked person emerges after a flash of lights and lightning out of nowhere. This is actually a Terminator (T-800), a cyborg from the future who was sent to the past with the mission to kill Sarah Connor. On the other hand, we see the same phenomenon of lights happening in a street, but this time an ordinary human named Kyle Reese appears, who has the mission to protect Sarah from the bloodthirsty cyborg and terminator with human appearance.

Talking about this film is like talking about a very essential part of my childhood and adolescence. Since I was a child, it seems that I have always been very attached to works of the science fiction genre. However, very few have impacted me as much as this particular film did (although I prefer its sequel, which is one of the best films I have ever seen). As raw, bloodthirsty and dark as it is; this film has a legendary story that has come to inspire many works of the genre today. And not only that, but it has become an incomparable classic that even to this day continues to give much to talk about in cinema and popular culture today. The idea of a post-apocalyptic future dominated by machines was something that, although 40 years ago it was a fantasy, today it is becoming more and more credible due to the high advances in both technology and artificial intelligence. However, as interesting as this and other topics that can be discussed about this 80's classic may be, we should not underestimate the lesson it leaves us with and the clear message it has regarding destiny and human existence itself.

Hablar de esta película es como hablar de una parte muy esencial de mi infancia y adolescencia. Desde pequeño parece que siempre he tenido mucho apego a obras del género de ciencia ficción. Sin embargo, muy pocas me han impactado tanto como lo hizo esta cinta en particular (aunque prefiero más su secuela, la cual es de las mejores películas que he visto en mi vida). A pesar de lo crudo, sanguinario y oscuro que es; esta cinta posee una historia legendaria que ha llegado a inspirar a muchas obras del género en la actualidad. Y no solo eso, sino que se ha vuelto un clásico incomparable que aún a la fecha de hoy sigue dando mucho de qué hablar en el cine y en la cultura popular actual. La idea de un futuro post-apocalíptico dominado por las máquinas fue algo que, si bien hace 40 años era una fantasía, al día de hoy se escuchaba cada vez más y más creíble debido a los altos avances tanto en la tecnología como en la inteligencia artificial. Starting with the story they are trying to tell us, everything seems to revolve around a young waitress and resident of Los Angeles who has a normal life in one of the most famous times in history where rock, debauchery and defiance of laws were all the rage. One night, after the events I just told you about above; we see how a human-like being appears naked out of nowhere, searches for clothes and weapons while killing along the way and finds a list of names among which are Sarah Connor. The hunt begins and on the news we hear of the murder cases that have occurred that day and the same name is repeated twice as the waitress trying to have a quiet Friday night realizes that it is her name they are saying on screen. Fear takes over and she begins to look for help as she takes refuge in a party among a crowd of people. She feels she is being stalked and watched by someone until the giant appears armed in front of her. Kyle Reese saves her and they escape for their lives as this bloodthirsty, synthetic, soulless being chases them around the city.

What we get to see for over an hour and a half of film is a long chase between a traveler from the future, a waitress and a human-like machine that is hunting them down for extermination. The way in which we are introduced to the characters is quite authentic. With common responses and attitudes of the time, it is normal to see such absurd yet epic things happen in this film (as is the case of the police station). The essence of this plot can be summed up in the ordinary protagonist who out of nowhere has one of the worst nights of her life, the hero who is actually the time traveler who seeks to protect her, and the villain or antagonist who is a machine made to kill. This unique blend of elements is what makes this movie the classic that everyone now remembers. But what is most striking are the scenes or flashbacks to that chaotic and apocalyptic future it shows us where humans try to survive while fighting against machines. This gives a much darker, disturbing and heartbreaking tone to the story. Not to mention the same theme of time travel and the paradoxical ending we see.

Empezando por la historia que nos intentan contar, todo parece girar en torno a una joven camarera y residente de Los Ángeles que tiene una vida normal en una de las épocas más famosas de la historia donde el rock, el libertinaje y el desafío de las leyes estaban en auge. Una noche, luego de los acontecimientos que les acabo de contar arriba; vemos cómo un ser parecido a un humano aparece desnudo de la nada, busca ropa y armas mientras mata por el camino y encuentra una lista de nombres entre los cuales están Sarah Connor. La caza empieza y en las noticias se escuchan los casos de asesinatos que han ocurrido ese día y el mismo nombre se repite dos veces mientras la camarera que intenta tener una noche de un viernes tranquilo se da cuenta de que es su nombre el que dicen en pantalla. El miedo se apodera de ella y empieza a buscar ayuda mientras se refugia en una fiesta entre un montón de personas. Esta mezcla tan única de elementos es lo que hace de esta película el clásico que ahora todo el mundo recuerda. Pero lo que más impacta son las escenas o recuerdos de ese futuro caótico y apocalíptico que nos muestra donde los humanos intentan sobrevivir mientras pelean contra las máquinas. Esto le da un tono mucho más oscuro, perturbador y desconsolador a la historia. Eso sin mencionar el mismo tema de los viajes en el tiempo y el final paradójico que vemos.

For a science fiction and action movie, I really like the use of suspense elements, more than anything else in terms of the vision or way of telling us about this apocalyptic future that is approaching. If it is true that in terms of acting there is not much to complain about since the cast does a good job, especially Arnold Schwarzenegger who proved to be a great cyborg or Terminator in this film (something that has since consecrated him both inside and outside the franchise and the world of cinema to this day). On the other hand, Linda Hamilton does a fine acting job as well, nothing remarkable in comparison, but in keeping with what a girl of that era would get to be and do in a series of events like what we see in this work. Michael Biehn is another one who does a great acting job, proving to be the typical time traveler that no one believes what he tells about his future, but with his experience and knowledge to fight against a human-like machine is more than convincing. Of course, there are details that I could mention that I didn't like, but maybe that's just my opinion, driven by a somewhat/quite critical view on the matter.

Now, talking about the themes already mentioned above, like the war between machines and the apocalyptic future we see in this movie, there are a couple of things I would like to mention. To begin with, I want to make clear my fascination with machines and technology. While it is true that I am only saying this from what I know and have seen in movies of the science fiction genre, I am of the opinion that the technological advancement of robots and advanced gadgets is a stroke of genius that really catches my attention. On the other hand, I also support the belief that the misuse of these technologies can affect human survival if it becomes superior in terms of intelligence, self-sufficiency and reasoning ability. I say this because it is a fact that the greatest threat to human life is the human race itself. We are a self-destructive species, but we are also intelligent and constructive if we are well guided. This is why if artificial intelligence becomes so advanced to the point of seeing us as a threat, the future we see in this tape may be a possibility. Clearly, this is just my opinion and I only leave it in theory based on the obvious results of the same technology today.

Para ser una película de ciencia ficción y acción me gusta mucho que usen elementos de suspenso, más que nada en lo que respecta a la visión o forma de contarnos este futuro apocalíptico que se avecina. Si es cierto que en cuanto a actuación no hay mucho de qué quejarse ya que el elenco hace un buen trabajo, sobre todo Arnold Schwarzenegger que demostró ser un grandioso cyborg o Terminator en esta película (algo que desde entonces lo ha consagrado tanto dentro como fuera de la franquicia y el mundo del cine hasta la fecha de hoy). Por otro lado, Linda Hamilton hace un buen trabajo de actuación también, nada destacable en comparación, pero sí acorde a lo que una chica de aquella época llegaría ser y hacer en una serie de eventos como lo que vemos en esta obra. Michael Biehn es otro que hace un gran trabajo de actuación, demostrando ser el típico viajero del tiempo que nadie le cree lo que cuenta sobre su futuro, pero que con su experiencia y conocimientos para pelear contra una máquina con apariencia humana es más que convincente. Claro, hay detalles que podría mencionar que no me gustaron, pero puede que sea solo mi opinión llevada por una visión un tanto/bastante crítica al respecto.

Ahora, hablando sobre los temas que ya mencionamos arriba, como la guerra entre las máquinas y el futuro apocalíptico que vemos en esta película, hay un par de cosas que me gustaría mencionar. Para empezar quiero dejarles en claro mi fascinación con las máquinas y la tecnología. Si bien es cierto que esto solo lo digo por lo que sé y he visto en películas del género de ciencia ficción, opino que el avance tecnológico de robots y aparatos avanzados es una genialidad que me llama mucho la atención. Por otro lado, también apoyo la creencia de que el mal uso de estas tecnologías puede llegar a afectar la supervivencia humana si esta llega a superarse en cuanto a inteligencia, autosuficiencia y capacidad de razonar. Esto lo digo porque es un hecho de que la mayor amenaza contra la vida humana es su misma raza. Somos una especie autodestructiva, pero también inteligente y constructiva si nos guiamos bien. Es por esto que si la inteligencia artificial llega a avanzar tanto a tal punto de vernos como una amenaza, el futuro que vemos en esta cinta puede que sea una posibilidad. Claramente, esto es solo mi opinión y solo lo dejo en teoría basándome en los evidentes resultados de la misma tecnología en la actualidad.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical aspect of this science fiction classic. Directed by one of the greatest geniuses and directors of this century, it is normal to see in this film certain visual and production details that make it stand out from most films of its time. Despite how dated it may look, I like the way in which we are shown this post-apocalyptic future full of darkness, machines and vehicles walking on a ground full of skeletons and human skulls among so much debris, fire and destruction. The use of practical effects and make-up may be the highlight of this film, especially with the T-800 or Terminator played by the great Arnold Schwarzenegger (although I also highlight the use of CGI in the mechanical skeleton of the same in the final part). The use of dark tones, shadows and cameras seem a bit ambiguous to me, but nothing to complain about. The sound effects are another noteworthy detail, especially with so many action scenes, guns, shooting, chases and explosions. The soundtrack is what could now be called a true homage to both the story and the franchise itself. For a film from the 80s it is very well done overall. If you're a fan of the genre or the classics, this movie is for you.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/action genre goes.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico que tiene este clásico de la ciencia ficción. Dirigida por uno de los mayores genios y directores de este siglo, es normal ver en esta película ciertos detalles visuales y de producción que la hacen destacarse por sobre la mayoría de cintas de su época. A pesar de lo antiguo que puede llegar a verse, me gusta la forma en la que nos muestran este futuro post-apocalíptico repleto de oscuridad, máquinas y vehículos andando sobre un suelo repleto de esqueletos y cráneos humanos entre tanto escombro, fuego y destrucción. El uso de efectos prácticos y maquillajes puede que sea lo más destacable de esta película, sobre todo con el T-800 o Terminator interpretado por el gran Arnold Schwarzenegger (aunque destaco también el uso del CGI en el esqueleto mecánico del mismo en la parte final). El uso de tonos oscuros, sombras y cámaras me parecen un poco ambiguos, pero nada de qué quejarse. Los efectos de sonido son otro detalle destacable, sobre todo con tantas escenas de acción, armas, disparos, persecuciones y explosiones. La banda sonora es lo que ahora podría decirse un verdadero homenaje tanto a la historia como a la misma franquicia. Para ser una cinta de los 80s está muy bien hecha en general. Si eres fan del género o de los clásicos, esta película es para tí.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y acción.
