Review Little Women 2019: Love bonds/ Vinculos de amor. ENG/ESP

Last week we went to a screening of the latest 2019 release Little women, directed by Greta Gerwig, is one of the adaptations of the novel of the same name written by Louisa May Alcott. Featuring an all-star cast of Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Timothee Chalamet as Laurie, Emma Watson as Meg, Eliza Scanlen as Beth, Florence Pugh as Amy. Laura Dern as Marme, Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

It tells the story of the childhood, youth and adulthood of 4 sisters who go through different obstacles during and after the war.

The first thing I want to point out is that I had not seen a trailer for this new adaptation, but I had a lot of hype, as I have seen the '94 version dozens of times.

When the movie started the first thing that struck me was the cast, very good actresses and the names of the moment, but they were not differentiated in ages and that was shocking, the only one in my opinion that had age/character relationship was Beth. Then I felt that the chronological jumps in the movie were very confusing and added to the above I don't know if a person who saw this as a first version of the movie could carry the sequence of the scenes.

Then we have the individual character development. Saoirse Ronan as Jo seemed to me to capture all the emotions of the character, the passion, confusion, frustration, desire to eat the world but at the same time not to move away from her family, the most beloved thing for her. Emma Watson didn't stand out to me, honestly Meg is the sister that stands out the least, I don't know how to say it without sounding bad.... I loved Beth, and I'm always heartbroken by her ending. And Amy, after Jo is my favorite character, she's the only one we see go from childhood to adolescence and it's impossible not to get attached to her, although this is not understood, since the same actress, Florence Pugh plays the child and adult Amy, and her tantrums as a little girl look rather ridiculous and pointless.

Marme did not excel in this adaptation, impossible not to compare Laura Dern to Susan Sarandon.... And Timothee as Laurie came across to me as dreamy.... Enamored... But this time Greta made him much more romantic although I disliked that he almost never talks about his interests in music or art, he was practically relegated to the love interest of the girls.... I liked the new Friedrick, a more similar age to be our main character Jo's love interest. It was also very odd that Bob Odenkirk suddenly appeared as the March's father, I think he'll always be Saul Goodman to me haha.

This version has its emotional moments very marked, the sad moments like when Jo rejects Laurie, Beth's illness and death, you can tell they wanted to bring tears to our eyes.... On the other hand, it has very good comic reliefs, especially towards the end, when Professor Friedrick shows up at the March's house, all of us on the terrace were laughing.

Greta Gerwig with the direction wanted to leave her mark to a story that has been told many times (as a curiosity, did you know that Little Women has an anime?) she softened some characters, and exaggerated others, as I see it all goes with her feminist speech too, she did not hesitate to add it through the script talking about marriage or the social and economic differences that presented the genders at the time in which the film is set. I must say that those monologues were too much because it is much of the point of the film, only Joe's last one seems justified to me, since it focuses more on his feelings. I understand that they wanted the movie to stand out and be visually appealing, but something that people who know about fashion history complain about is that it is impossible that in a poor family of the time girls would wear such dresses, and I totally agree.

As a conclusion, it's a very beautiful movie visually! Of my favorite scenes would be when Jo and Beth go to the sea, this is a scene that is not in the 94 movie, and I thought it was beautiful, it makes you feel the nostalgia and anguish of both of them to know what is going to come, all gray and sad....

And another one is the dance sequence when Jo and Laurie meet, this one had a change where they were dancing down the hallway that goes to the windows of the house and it's just beautiful. A more matching cast would have improved it a lot, it's a movie worth seeing, but first see the 1994 one please haha.
