Cine TV Contest #102: Meteor (1979) [English / Spanish].
In 1979, I was twelve years old and I was already running away from my school to the movies to see any kind of film where my age allowed me to go alone. At that age I can't say that I had a very well formed cinematographic criterion.
In my escapades I saw a film that belongs to the purest catastrophe cinema of the 70's, its rhythm was uneven and at times it entertained me and at others it bored me and at the time its special effects seemed to me very grandiloquent, (although they were really very crappy) and the sound of the film was spectacular (coincidentally, this film was nominated in the category of Best Sound at the 1979 Oscar awards). The cast featured great stars among them, Sean Conery, Natalie Wood, Martin Landau, Brian Keith, Karl Malden, Trevor Howard and Henry Fonda who played their roles decently.
The movie was called Meteor, directed by Ronald Neame (director also of The Poseidon Adventure), is a science fiction thriller that tries to transport us to an apocalyptic scenario starring a giant meteor that threatens to destroy the Earth. The plot is very simple: a comet splits a huge meteorite in two, and a detached meteorite cap is heading towards the Earth. Russians and Americans must join nuclear forces to deflect the orbit of Orpheus (the name of the meteorite).
In the historical context of the time in which the film was released, the 1970s were marked by a growing awareness of the environment and the dangers of natural disasters. The idea of an astronomical event of such magnitude that could endanger the very existence of mankind is extremely shocking.
As for the astronomical event itself, the impact of the meteor on Earth would undoubtedly be catastrophic. Its arrival would cause enormous damage worldwide, triggering tsunamis, earthquakes and drastic climate change. This makes us question our ability to cope with an event of such magnitude and reminds us of the importance of scientific research and preparedness for potential natural disasters.
The film's protagonists, played by actors such as Sean Connery and Natalie Wood, acted in a courageous and determined manner, displaying a spirit of cooperation and determination in the face of adversity. Their teamwork and ingenuity were crucial in finding a solution to the problem and averting catastrophe.
The impact of a meteorite on Earth can have catastrophic consequences. The idea that such a large and powerful object could collide with our planet is frightening and makes us reflect on our vulnerability to astronomical events.
Such an event causes chaos and despair in the population. Uncertainty and fear of the unknown take hold of people, making us reflect on our fragility and the importance of protecting our planetary home.
Personally, this movie gave me a pleasant time and made me think about the ability of human beings to come together and work together in times of crisis, showing that, when we unite, we are capable of overcoming any challenge.
It can be argued that the film lacks depth in terms of exploring themes beyond the impending danger of the meteorite. The lack of secondary character development and the simplification of certain scientific aspects detract somewhat from the realism of the story.
The film at the time picks up on the old Cold War tension between the US and the USSR, which here must join forces to save humanity. The fact that both powers divert missiles from their military satellites to fight a meteorite makes us reflect on the fragility of our civilization and the importance of working together to face global challenges.
It is curious to see how this theme became a trend years later with the blockbuster films Armageddon and Deep Impact (both 1998). Meteor can be considered the father of these films.

En 1979, yo tenia doce años de edad y ya me escapaba de mi colegio al cine a ver cualquier tipo de película en donde por mi edad me dejasen entrar solo. A esa edad no puedo decir que tenia un criterio cinematográfico muy bien formado.
En mis escapadas vi una película que pertenece al mas puro cine de catástrofe de los 70, su ritmo era desigual y por momentos me entretenía y por otros me aburría y en la época sus efectos especiales me parecian muy grandilocuentes, (aunque de verdad eran muy cutres) y el sonido del film resultaba espectacular ( casualmente, nominaron a esta película en la categoría de Mejor Sonido en los premios Oscar de 1979). El reparto presentaba grandes estrellas entre ellos , Sean Conery , Natalie Wood , Martin Landau, Brian Keith, Karl Malden, Trevor Howard y Henry Fonda que cumplen decorosamente sus papeles.
La película se llamaba Meteoro, dirigida por Ronald Neame (director también de La Aventura del Poseidon), es un thriller de ciencia ficción que intenta transportarnos a un escenario apocalíptico protagonizado por un meteoro gigante que amenaza con destruir la Tierra. El argumento es muy simple: un cometa parte en dos un meteorito enorme, y un casquete desprendido del mismo se dirige hacia la tierra. Rusos y Estadounidenses deben sumar fuerzas nucleares para desviar la órbita de Orfeo, (el nombre del casquete).
En el contexto histórico de la época en la que se estrenó la película, la década de 1970 estaba marcada por una creciente conciencia sobre el medio ambiente y los peligros de los desastres naturales. La idea de un evento astronómico de tal magnitud que pueda poner en peligro la existencia misma de la humanidad es sumamente impactante.
En cuanto al evento astronómico en sí, el impacto del meteoro en la Tierra sería, sin duda, catastrófico. Su llegada causaría un enorme daño a nivel mundial, provocando tsunamis, terremotos y cambios climáticos drásticos. Esto nos hace cuestionar nuestra capacidad para hacer frente a un evento de tal magnitud y nos recuerda la importancia de la investigación científica y la preparación para posibles desastres naturales.
Los protagonistas de la película, interpretados por actores como Sean Connery y Natalie Wood, actuaron de manera valiente y decidida, mostrando un espíritu de cooperación y determinación frente a la adversidad. Su trabajo en equipo y su ingenio fueron cruciales para encontrar una solución al problema y evitar la catástrofe.
El impacto de un meteorito en la Tierra puede tener consecuencias catastróficas. La idea de que un objeto tan grande y poderoso pudiera chocar con nuestro planeta es aterradora y nos hace reflexionar sobre nuestra vulnerabilidad frente a los eventos astronómicos.
Semejante evento causa caos y desesperación en la población. La incertidumbre y el temor ante lo desconocido se apoderan de las personas, lo que nos hace reflexionar sobre nuestra fragilidad y sobre la importancia de proteger nuestro hogar planetario.
Personalmente, esta película me hizo pasar un rato agradable y me hizo pensar en la capacidad del ser humano para unirse y trabajar juntos en momentos de crisis, demostrando que, cuando nos unimos, somos capaces de superar cualquier desafío.
Se puede argumentar que la película carece de profundidad en cuanto a la exploración de temas más allá del peligro inminente del meteorito. La falta de desarrollo de personajes secundarios y la simplificación de ciertos aspectos científicos le restan algo de realismo a la historia.
El film en su momento recoge la añeja tensión típica de la guerra fría entre EEUU y la URSS, que aquí deben unir sus fuerzas para salvar la humanidad. El hecho de que ambas potencias desvíen misiles de sus satélites militares para combatir un meteorito hace reflexionar sobre la fragilidad de nuestra civilización y la importancia de trabajar juntos para enfrentar desafíos globales.
Es curioso ver como esta temática se volvio una moda años más tarde con las supertaquilleras películas Armageddon y Deep Impact ( ambas de 1998). Es que Meteoro puede considerarse el padre de estos films.

No había escuchado nada sobre esta película, la buscaré ya que suena interesante lo que comentas de que dos grandes potencias se unen al ver lo frágil de la civilización.
