Tommy is a musical film directed by Ken Russell, based on the rock opera of the same name written by Pete Townshend, member of the British rock band The Who. The film was released in 1975 and had an outstanding cast that included great musicians and actors such as Roger Daltrey, Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, Jack Nicholson, Robert Powell, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Arthur Brown and of course The Who.
The film is based on The Who's concept album, and tells the story of a deaf, blind and mute boy who becomes a pop culture icon. Throughout the film, themes of fame, religion and spirituality are explored, leading the audience to reflect on the nature of worship and idolatry in modern society.
Tommy, is handicapped as a result of childhood trauma, his father having been left for dead during World War I. Tommy's mother soon after learns of his father's death. Tommy's mother soon thereafter enters into a relationship with another man, but it turns out that Tommy's father was not dead. He returns home to find his wife with his new partner. The two men fight and Tommy's father dies. At the age of five, Tommy witnesses the event, where his mother and her lover yell at him and force him to forget everything he has seen and heard and, above all, demand that he tell nothing, thus turning him into a blind, deaf and mute child.
2.- A gypsy witch who tries to get him back with drugs.
At the same time he is abused by his cousin Kevin (who enjoys burning him with cigarettes).
He is also cared for by his uncle Ernie, a child molester who sexually abuses him.
However, Tommy o has a great ability to play the pinball machine. Years pass and Tommy does not heal. A doctor diagnoses that he will never be cured.
But the miracle happens.Tommy breaks a mirror that was in his house and in front of which for all those years he had stood in front of as if he could see himself.
His healing and his status as pinball king make him an idol. Thousands of young people worship him to the point of becoming a true leader, Tommy preaches sensory deprivation as a path to sainthood.
But the protagonist of this story realizes that he is a normal being, and decides to embark on a new life.
Tommy's repertoire is inspired by the teachings of Meher Baba, a religious man of Iranian origin who tried to unite all the religions of the world. In 1925 he decided to remain silent, an attitude he maintained until shortly before his death in 1969. Baba affirmed that we live ignoring our real self and that we need to bring out all our inner talent to serve as a guide for the benefit of others, through love, truth, purity and beauty.
Pete Townhsend was disappointed by traditional religion and had a lot of spiritual doubts, so he concluded that man cannot be limited to a single body, so he researched and became a great connoisseur of Meher Baba's works.
The 1970s witnessed a surge in artistic and cinematic experimentation, with directors such as Ken Russel challenging established norms and exploring taboo subjects. In this context, Tommy emerged as a bold film that challenged the expectations of audiences and critics. Pete Townshend collaborated closely with Ken Russel in the creation of the film, bringing his unique perspective on music and spirituality.
Ken Russel, as director, approaches religious themes in an almost provocative manner. Throughout the film, elements of social and religious critique can be seen that question traditional institutions and explore spirituality in an unusual way.

This is a work I revisit very often because I love the music of The Who and always find something to discuss with my wife. It has been almost 49 years since its release and many still consider it the best rock opera adapted to film. It is an essential title for me in my video library.

La película se basa en el álbum conceptual de The Who, y narra la historia de un niño sordo, ciego y mudo que se convierte en un ícono de la cultura pop. A lo largo de la película, se exploran temas como la fama, la religión y la espiritualidad, llevando al público a reflexionar sobre la naturaleza del culto y la idolatría en la sociedad moderna.
Tommy, presenta una minusvalía consecuencia de un trauma infantil, al ser su padre dado por muerto durante la primera guerra mundial. La madre de Tommy poco después entabla relaciones con otro hombre, pero resulta que el padre de Tommy no estaba muerto. Vuelve al hogar y encuentra a su esposa con su nuevo compañero. Los dos hombres se pelean y muere el padre de Tommy, quien con cinco años presencia el hecho, en donde su madre y su amante le gritan y le obligan a que olvide todo lo que ha visto y oído y, sobre todo, le exigen que no cuente nada, convirtiendose así en un niño ciego, sordo y mudo.

Paralelamente sufre abusos por parte de su primo Kevin (que disfruta quemándole con cigarrillos).
También lo cuida su tío Ernie, un pederasta que abusa sexualmente de él.
Sin embargo, Tommy o tiene una gran habilidad para jugar a la máquina de pinball. Pasan los años y Tommy no sana. Un médico diagnostica que no se curará nunca.
Pero el milagro sucede.Tommy rompe un espejo que había en su casa y ante el cual durante todos esos años se había detenido delante como si pudiera verse.
Su curación y su condición de rey del pinball le convierten en un ídolo. Miles de jóvenes le adoran hasta convertirse en un auténtico líder, Tommy predica la privación sensorial como vía para llegar a la santidad.
Pero el protagonista de esta historia se da cuenta de que es un ser normal, y decide emprender una nueva vida.
El repertorio de Tommy se inspira en las enseñanzas de Meher Baba, un religioso de origen iraní que pretendía unir todas las religiones del mundo , este en 1925 decidió permanecer en silencio, una actitud que mantuvo hasta poco antes de su muerte en el año 1969. Baba afirmaba que vivimos ignorando nuestro yo real y que necesitamos sacar todo nuestro talento interior para que sirva de guía en beneficio de otros, por medio del amor, la verdad, la pureza y la belleza.
Pete Townhsend estaba decepcionado por la religión tradicional y tenía una gran cantidad de dudas espirituales, entonces concluyo que el hombre no puede estar limitado a un solo cuerpo, así investigo y se convirtió en un gran conocedor de las obras de Meher Baba.
La década de 1970 fue testigo de un aumento en la experimentación artística y cinematográfica, con directores como Ken Russel desafiando las normas establecidas y explorando temas tabú. En este contexto, Tommy emergió como una película audaz que desafió las expectativas del público y la crítica. Han pasado casi 49 años desde sus estreno y aun muchos la consideran la mejor opera rock adaptada al cine. Es un titulo imprescindible para mi dentro de mi videoteca.
