Kneecap - The movie.

Drugs, music and Irish.

This pretty much sums it up.

This movie won't be for everybody. It's a very niche movie about a little known Irish rap group based in the North of Ireland who found fame despite rocky beginnings.

I know a bit of their music but before this year they were very much underground. With a name like "Kneecap" and a "DJ Provai" it says a lot about the direction of the movie.

Irish isn't a widely spoken language even on this island never mind worldwide although there are pockets here and there. So when a rap group hits the airwaves with a mixture of Irish and English lyrics it's not going to be to everybody's taste.

Personally I grew up on Tupac and DMX. West coast and East coast rivalries and dreams of that LA lifestyle.

Kneecap are a far cry from this being closer to a Michael Collins tribute on MDMA but they have that same grittiness and uniqueness.

A new genre.

Kneecap is set in West Belfast in 2019. Fate brings together disillusioned music teacher JJ with self-confessed 'low life scum' Naoise and Liam Og, changing the sound of Irish music forever," the description continues. "Under the name Kneecap, their band begins moulding the language to fit their tough, anarchic, hedonistic lives. A language encumbered with forty words for stone now has one for stoned. But to get their voices heard the trio must overcome police, paramilitaries and politicians as the future of the Irish language erupts into the public arena - with them at the centre.

The movie explores where they were at the time in their lives and how it all came together in a haze of Nationalism and drug abuse.

Sounds like a fun weekend to be fair.

The movie itself is loosely based on their real lives at the time with a little embellishment i'm sure.

From discovering their talent to the first gigs in an empty pub all the way to their current iconic status. It's a great watch.

I only threw it on at the weekend out of curiosity but got hooked from start to finish.

Fair warning the language and drugs are extreme but we're well used to it around these parts. Might not be for everybody, definitely not for minors.

I won't give away to plot of the movie itself but it's fast paced, funny and if your Irish and understand the context a very interesting watch on the culture up north and how it effects daily life.

Like the ghettos in America, music gave these three a chance to change their lives and make a name for themselves that wouldn't have been there otherwise.

It gives a voice to those who might not feel seen or heard just like the rap of the 8i0's and 90's.

Well worth a watch.

Must watch this man, heard great things about it from a few people now. They played the Arts festival this year in Galway and people were raving about how good they were...

I'll have to check out Tupan... 😉🤣
