MORTAL KOMBAT (2021) - REVIEW [ENG/ESP]

Hola, hola, hivers del cine, ¿cómo andan? Bienvenidos a una nueva reseña. Hoy vamos a hablar de una película de la cual no esperaba nada y aún así me sorprendió un montón: Mortal Kombat (2021). No soy una gamer, sí disfruto una partida de algún juego de vez en cuando, incluido Mortal Kombat, pero no resulta adictivo para mí tanto como leer o ver películas.

Las preguntas para hoy: ¿la trama tiene sentido a pesar de basarse en una historia fantástica? ¿Los efectos especiales están bien? ¿La puedes entender incluso si no has jugado Mortal Kombat? Vamos a averiguarlo.

Cole no es más que un luchador que cuida de su esposa e hija ganando batallas a cambio de dinero y recibiendo palizas peligrosas de vez en cuando. Su vida sería normal de no ser porque nació con La Marca, el dragón en su piel que conserva desde su nacimiento y que es una invitación a defender la Tierra en un torneo místico de artes marciales, antes que los malvados del Mundo Exterior liderados por Shang Tsung triunfen de nuevo y puedan dominar la tierra. Cole es más que un competidor, es una profecía, y Shang Tsung no está dispuesto a que se cumpla. Eliminará a cualquiera que se interponga en su camino para dominar la Tierra y Cole necesitará de más luchadores como él para defenderla.

Quiero hacer esta reseña basándome en la película como producto en sí, no como adaptación porque realmente no soy tan fan del juego. Sin embargo, voy a abrir un paréntesis para mencionar que Mortal Kombat es un juego que se caracteriza por mostrar huesos y sangre. Se esperaba una película gore. Me alegra decir que tuvo el suficiente para complacer a los fans y a su vez no ser demasiado sangriento para el público nuevo. Yo odio el exceso de sangre, no obstante, me la pasé bien viendo esta película y no me incomodó la violencia gráfica.

Siguiendo por la línea visual, los efectos están muy buenos; me temía que los poderes mágicos de los personajes se vieran muy falsos. Es una película para mayores de dieciocho donde todos sabemos que es absolutamente irreal pero no deja de verse muy bonito; los detalles están cuidados e incluso los monstruos de CGI están en la línea perfecta entre parecer salidos del juego y no verse tan computarizados al lado de los actores.

En cuanto a la historia tengo que decir que no necesitas ni saber los nombres de los personajes principales para entenderla, eso es positivo, la gente que ve la película se siente atraída al juego y viceversa. Tiene detalles hechos para los fans del juego pero no hacen que el nuevo espectador se confunda.

La trama tiene sentido y te deja picado. Te conecta a los personajes para que te duelan las pérdidas y celebres los triunfos. El ritmo de la película respeta la esencia de batalla, hay una pelea cada tanto y las coreografías de lucha están preciosas; tienen un efecto como de videojuego, un aire oriental muy épico, armas y mucho movimiento de cámara que acompaña a la pelea.

Necesito destacar que en la película actúa el luchador japonés, más japonés y más luchador de todos. Larga vida a Hiroyuki Sanada.

Me quedé esperando la segunda parte, también mi madre, que ni siquiera sabía qué era Mortal Kombat. Quizá como adaptación un verdadero fan tenga alguna queja, yo no, 9/10.

Hello, hello, movie hivers, what's up? Welcome to a new review. Today we're going to talk about a movie that I didn't expect anything from and yet it surprised me a lot: Mortal Kombat (2021). I'm not a gamer, I do enjoy a game from time to time, including Mortal Kombat, but it's not as addictive for me as reading or watching movies.

The questions for today: does the plot make sense despite being based on a fantastic story? Are the special effects okay? Can you understand it even if you haven't played Mortal Kombat? Let's find out.

Cole is nothing more than a fighter who takes care of his wife and daughter by winning battles for money and taking dangerous beatings from time to time. His life would be normal were it not for the fact that he was born with The Mark, the dragon on his skin that he has kept since birth and which is an invitation to defend the Earth in a mystical martial arts tournament, before the evil ones from the Outer World led by Shang Tsung triumph again and can dominate the land. Cole is more than a competitor, he is a prophecy, and Shang Tsung is not willing to let it come true. He will eliminate anyone who stands in his way to dominate the Earth and Cole will need more fighters like him to defend it.

I want to do this review based on the movie as a product itself, not as an adaptation because I'm not really that big of a fan of the game. However, I will open a parenthesis to mention that Mortal Kombat is a game characterized by showing bones and blood. A gore movie was expected. I'm happy to say it had just enough to please fans while not being too gory for new audiences. I hate excessive gore, however, I had a good time watching this movie and was not uncomfortable with the graphic violence.

Following along the visual line, the effects are very good; I was afraid that the magical powers of the characters would look very fake. It's a movie for adults where we all know it's absolutely unreal but it still looks very nice; the details are taken care of and even the CGI monsters are on the perfect line between looking like they came out of the game and not looking so computerized next to the actors.

As for the story I have to say that you don't even need to know the names of the main characters to understand it, that's positive, people who watch the movie are drawn to the game and vice versa. It has details made for fans of the game but it doesn't make the new viewer confused.

The plot makes sense and leaves you stung. It connects you to the characters so that you ache for the losses and celebrate the triumphs. The rhythm of the movie respects the essence of battle, there is a fight every now and then and the fight choreographies are beautiful; they have a video game effect, a very epic oriental feel, weapons and a lot of camera movement that accompanies the fight.

I need to emphasize that in the movie we have the Japanese fighter, more Japanese and more fighter of all. Long live Hiroyuki Sanada.

I was waiting for the second part, so was my mother, who didn't even know what Mortal Kombat was. Maybe as an adaptation a true fan has some complaints, I don't, 9/10.
