Hello, people of Hive! Welcome to a new review, I'm Nieves and today we are going to talk about the good and the bad of "La Madre" or "The Mother" in English. A movie of which I didn't expect much, since Jennifer Lopez has never seemed to me the best actress ever, however, it was quite entertaining to watch. Let's start.
¡Hola, gente de Hive! Bienvenidos a una nueva reseña, soy Nieves y hoy vamos a hablar sobre lo bueno y lo malo de “La Madre” o “The Mother” en inglés. Una película de la cuál no esperaba mucho, ya que Jennifer López nunca me ha parecido la mejor actriz de la historia, sin embargo, fue bastante entretenida de ver. Comencemos.
It tells the story of The Mother (Jennifer Lopez), an ex-army agent and criminal who introduced two arms dealers with whom she had sex and became pregnant. To get out of the business she decides to sell them to the FBI, however, she is forced to give her daughter up for adoption for her safety, but Agent Cruise promises to warn her if anything happens that puts her at risk. I was struck by the idea of a female version of “Búsqueda Implacable” (Taken) with a younger daughter and seeing Jennifer outside of simple romantic comedies. Do I feel it was poorly developed? Absolutely.
Llamó mi atención la idea de una versión femenina de “Búsqueda Implacable” (Taken) con una hija más pequeña y ver a Jennifer fuera de las comedias románticas simples. ¿Siento que estuvo mal desarrollado? Totalmente.
If we talk about the plot of the story, The Mother running away for twelve years with her daughter would seem more credible to me, but I was wondering the whole movie: did the two villains wait twelve years to look for the girl? For what? Does she have any special information? Are they going to tell me she was super protected? Well no, the girl was there, casual with her mom and foster dad in full view of the world, but hey, it's convenient for the plot that they're trying to kidnap her right now. How lazy to wait twelve years to kill a little girl.
Si hablamos del argumento de la historia, La Madre huyendo durante doce años con su hija me parecería más creíble, pero estuve toda la película preguntándome: ¿los dos villanos esperaron doce años para buscar a la niña? ¿Para qué? ¿Tiene alguna información especial? ¿Al menos me van a decir que estuvo súper protegida? Pues no, la niña estaba ahí, casual con su mamá y su papá adoptivo a la vista del mundo, pero bueno, es conveniente para la trama que la intenten secuestrar justo ahora. Qué pereza esperar doce años para matar una niña.
That's my main problem with "The Mother ''. It abuses coincidences to the extreme, on top of that there are many implausible scenes. Jennifer breaking a van from underneath with her hands to get in? Excessively convenient shoting? A fire where she wonders if the villain died but her partner is alive when she clearly left him lying around? She starts a car with a knife? Hey, I really don't know much about locks, but a knife?
Ese es mi principal problema con “La Madre” abusa de las casualidades al extremo, encima hay muchas escenas inverosímiles. ¿Jennifer rompiendo una camioneta por debajo con sus manos para subir? ¿Puntería excesivamente conveniente? ¿Un incendio en el que se pregunta si el villano murió pero su compañero está vivo cuando claramente lo dejó por ahí? ¿Arranca un coche con cuchillo? Oigan, de verdad que yo de cerraduras mucho no sé, ¿pero un cuchillo?
My second problem is that the movie is about her and the agent taking care of their daughter... and they neglect her all the time! I mean, I understand that there are things they can't talk to the girl about, but they leave her outside a store, in a cafe, they send her to the bathroom alone... They keep leaving her out there alone when they sell me that the villains are super powerful and very dangerous. You make a fool of both the good guys and the bad guys.
Mi segundo problema es que la película trata de ella y el agente cuidando a su hija…¡y la descuidan todo el tiempo! O sea, entiendo que hay cosas que no pueden hablar con la niña, pero la dejan afuera de un negocio, en un café, la mandan al baño sola… Se la pasan dejándola por ahí sola cuando me venden que los villanos son súper poderosos y muy peligrosos. Me dejas en ridículo tanto a los buenos como a los malos.

As for performances and characters, I rescue Lucy Paez who plays Zoe. Her character is the only one that is understood. She is a first world girl, who knows she is adopted and is under clear stress because she was kidnapped, she does not understand what is going on and on top of that she is with a woman who looks like her mother but who looks at her with a disgusted face all the time (seriously, it seems that more than pain she is disgusted by her daughter with the faces she makes). She is twelve years old, I understand the tantrums, I understand that she gets saturated and that little by little she is discovering that she loves her mother and that she is not as bad a woman as she thinks.
En cuanto a actuaciones y personajes, rescato a Lucy Páez que interpreta a Zoe. Su personaje es el único que se entiende. Es una niña de primer mundo, que sabe que es adoptada y está bajo un claro estrés porque la secuestraron, no entiende qué ocurre y encima anda con una mujer que parece su madre pero que la mira con cara de asco todo el tiempo (en serio, parece que más que dolor le da asco su hija con las caras que hace). Tiene doce años, entiendo los berrinches, entiendo que se sature y que poco a poco vaya descubriendo que quiere a su madre y que no es tan mala mujer como ella cree.
Jlo's character I didn't understand, it was as if she was looking at her daughter with a hateful face the whole movie, she was unnecessarily rude to her and from one moment to the next I cried because she loves her with all her soul. There is no middle ground, no transition that makes you understand her more, no conversation about how dangerous her world is. Not with the girl, not with anyone.
El personaje de Jlo no lo entendí, era como si mirara con cara de odio a la hija toda la película, fue innecesariamente grosera con ella y de un momento a otro llore porque la ama con toda su alma. No hay un punto medio, una transición que te haga entenderla más, una conversación sobre lo peligroso que es su mundo. Ni con la niña ni con nadie.
In addition, although I understand that they wanted to make a kind of super strong woman, she makes weird faces all the time, they over exaggerate her role of "badass" and then she is caricatured. I'm not going to talk much about the music, but the two-second transition with "Mala Mia" by Maluma is out of the question.
Además, aunque comprendo que quisieran hacer una especie de mujer súper fuerte, todo el tiempo hace caras raras, sobre exageran su papel de “malota” y entonces queda caricaturizado. De la música no voy a hablar mucho, pero la transición de dos segundo a lo Rápidos Y Furiosos de “Mala Mía” de Maluma ni al caso.
Of that it entertains, entertains, but I would have left it in the middle if it weren't for the fact that I have to save them from watching it HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The first honorable mention goes to this man nicknamed "Tarantula", he appeared twice and in both chases he threw a woman and then a nun about three meters to the left HAHAHAHA why?
La primera mención honorífica se la lleva este hombre al que apodan “Tarántula”, apareció unas dos veces y en las dos persecuciones lanzó a una mujer y luego a una monja como tres metros hacia la izquierda JAJAJAJAJJA, o sea, ¿por qué?
What kills me is that they didn't even make an effort to put them in his path or more people, he just walks by them and throws them away pointlessly. I laughed too hard at how dumb it was. Imagine being a mom trying to take your kids out of the park because you heard a gunshot and a man comes out of nowhere and throws you for the other block HAHAHAHAHA
Lo que me mata es que ni siquiera se esforzaron por ponerlas en su camino ni a más gente, simplemente pasa por su lado y las tira sin sentido. Me reí demasiado con lo tonto que fue. Imagínate ser una madre tratando de llevarte a tus hijos del parque porque escuchaste un disparo y venga un hombre de la nada a lanzarte para la otra cuadra JAJAJAJAJA
The second scene I don't know if it makes me laugh or makes me indignant. The Mother crashes into a car, the man is worried and when he sees that she is fine, he gets angry because the crash is the woman's fault and she, very casually, hits him with her helmet. She hits the poor man in the face and leaves! What do they have in this movie for mistreating the extras?
La segunda escena yo no sé si me da risa o me indigna. La Madre choca, por necia, con un auto, el señor se preocupa y al ver que está bien se enoja porque el choque es culpa de la mujer y ella, muy casual, lo golpea con el casco. ¡Le da un cascazo en la cara al pobre señor y se va! ¿Qué tienen en esta película por maltratar a los extras?
Finally, we have to talk about the worst protector of the decade. They give you a shot of the road, where you can see any car within a mile because it's a long, flat, straight road. Then all of a sudden there's a super dumb crash caused by the bad guys. You're a super officer! How can you not stop or see around at an intersection? You don't even know how to drive well, imagine taking care of a child in danger. And worse yet, they have the nerve to give you the directional shot where it's obvious they could see the car coming.
Por último hay que hablar del peor protector de la década. Te dan un plano de la carretera, donde puedes ver cualquier auto a un kilómetro porque es un camino largo, llano y recto. Entonces de repente hay un choque súper tonto ocasionado por los malos. ¡Eres un super agente! ¿Cómo no vas a voltear en una intersección? Ni manejar bien sabe, imagínate cuidar a una niña en peligro. Y peor aún, tienen el descaro de darte la toma de la dirección donde es obvio que se veía venir el auto.
I'm going to stop this here because I don't think I can do it anymore. As a final score I'm going to give it a 4/10 because at least you can laugh at it.

4/10 is quite underwhelming but thank you for that. I was about to watch it just because it was on my recommended list. Considering the whole plot and everything, there are probably better movies to watch :D

Vi la pelicula pero no profundice taanto para valorarla. A mi me gustó, sé que JL no representa su mejor papel pero verla asumiendo un nuevo reto con este proyecto dice mucho de ella. Gracias por tu reseña. Saludos.

Una película que dio mucho de que hablar cuando salió y sin duda tuve la oportunidad de verla y al igual que tú cosas que no tienen un poco de sentido, donde le colocaron mucho tiempo para volverse a encontrar y es aquí donde uno se pregunta y la madre, además aspectos que son un poco exagerados y uno se queda pensando. Lo bueno fue ver a esa actriz tomando ese papel y poniendo a prueba cada uno de esos conocimientos, así que fue una producción entretenida y esa puntuación que le das me parece bien. Gracias por compartirlo con nosotros.

Si supieras que tenia ganas de ver esta película, pero leyendo tu reseña creo que no es buena idea jajajaja aunque si debería darle una oportunidad a ver que tal... Estoy acostumbrado a ver a Jlo en películas con tono romántico así que verla en este género será algo nuevo.
