The White Olive Tree : Between Love And Trauma
Hello everyone. How are you? I recently finished a drama from China called "The White Olive Tree". This drama tells the story of a volunteer in a country in conflict who falls in love with a journalist. This drama is quite unique, telling the human desire to live in peace because of seeing the impact of the conflict where children and women are the most disadvantaged groups.
Among Chinese and Korean dramas, Chinese dramas explore many themes that are outside of everyday life. However, the consequence of watching this drama is that I can't move on from the main characters, especially the main character. This drama is played by Chen Zheyuan who plays Li Zan. While the main character is played by Liang Jie who plays the character Song Ran. Both characters are very strong and interesting. Moreover, the phase of both of them fell in China in a country in conflict.
This drama also raises something that is beyond our expectations. Raising the impact of the conflict is the trauma felt by the volunteers. In the real world, we often miss if volunteers in conflict areas have trauma. Song Ran and Li Zan have trauma after being hit by a bomb explosion while fighting. Song Ran is covering the war that is happening. While Li Zan is a soldier. Both of them are traumatized. Song Ran has an eye injury.
However, in the midst of the trauma they experienced, both of them continued to fall in love with each other. I have to admit this is a breakthrough. Usually, someone who has trauma is reluctant to fall in love. However, both of them crossed that line and fell in love. Another interesting thing is about friendship. Li Zan has a best friend and both of them died to save Li Zan. I need to acknowledge the scene and shed tears.
However, I don't understand the open ending of this drama. This drama has an open ending, where all viewers can interpret it themselves. In the ending, Li Zan has trauma and is difficult to cure. In fact, for several months Li Zan did not want to eat and his weight was very thin. This is the impact of accumulated trauma. Because Li Zan's disease cannot be cured, Li Zan and Song Ran decided to Kawin Lari and leave everyone they love.
In fact, Song Ran and Li Zan's families are very supportive of both of them. At the end, there is a scene where both of them become the spirits of the olive white tree in an empty house. For me, this is a disappointing ending. Because, this ending seems to confirm that trauma cannot be cured. But, in terms of ideas, this drama is very interesting That's all I can tell you about this drama. See you in another story.

I'm struck by how it mixes romantic drama with such raw themes as post-conflict trauma. The characters dealing with emotional and physical wounds while trying to love must give it a very human twist. The open ending thing leaves me curious... Thanks for sharing!
