Yesterday, being ill, I was locked in the house and in one day I finished the TV series Baby reindeer with my husband, based on the true story and subsequent show of the comedian Richard Gadd. But let's talk about it carefully, the series opens with a not very good looking woman who enters a pub where our protagonist Donny (Richard Gadd himself) works, the woman immediately exposes herself with a rant about her important job as a lawyer and the his high-ranking acquaintances, but he can't afford a simple cup of tea and in hindsight this should have been the first Red Flag.

The woman's name is Martha and she begins to frequent the pub every day, Donny begins to see her as a picturesque character, not entirely unpleasant but who at the same time arouses feelings of pain and displeasure in him, a sort of friendship despite the fact that Martha begins to show an interest that is more of a love interest than a friend, showering him with compliments and believing the silly bar jokes made by him and his friends. He finds his email and here he begins to change and demonstrate his stalker side, inundating him with emails, Donny initially worries a little but it also seems to intrigue him, because somehow Martha covers his insecurities and makes him feel like a better person, so even though she notices the first signs of discomfort, she doesn't worry about it, she accepts her friendship on Facebook (and she writes comments under each photo, including the oldest ones, with insults if there are women) she finds her at his comedy shows and she laughs, he laughs and helps the audience laugh at his decidedly poor comedy.
A very strange relationship is established between the two, something that as they grow turns out to be more and more morbid, Donny realizes the danger of Martha which impacts his entire life but at the same time he is unable to completely detach himself from her, indeed in certain moments even Donny makes himself hated by how much he loves to wallow in drama.

Donny falls in love with Terri a Trans woman and not even a strong attack from Martha against her will convince him to press charges, he always seems to delay the moment of going to the police. The story then also develops with important flashbacks that help us to better understand Donny's character and his fragilities on which the sick dynamic of the relationship between him and Martha will then grow.

The themes covered in both the flashback and the present are sometimes very crude and raw, with explicit and sometimes disturbing sexual language. Much will be known about Donny's history, a past of substance abuse and never-resolved traumas, which lead him to be a strange character, extreme, double, inconsistent, reckless, restless.

A series that explores in an irreverent and crude way some not exactly pleasant aspects of human nature and also a phenomenon that is often silenced or denied, female stalking. We are all used to identifying the stalker with a man, forgetting that there are also female stalkers. In my opinion, this series has the great advantage that it leads you both to empathize with the characters but also to hate them precisely because it shows human nature with all its fragility, duplicity and pain. It is a series that, although with a slight comical streak, conveys a lot of pain, the protagonist was good at representing his dark moods and transmitting them to the viewer. I was very struck by his past where certain scenes were like punches in the stomach, with a rawness and pain that made you cry. I think it's a really well-made series and that Gadd proved to be very good both as an actor and a screenwriter. I recommend you see it because it's worth it!

La mujer se llama Martha y comienza a frecuentar el pub todos los días, Donny comienza a verla como un personaje pintoresco, no del todo desagradable pero que al mismo tiempo despierta en él sentimientos de dolor y disgusto, una suerte de amistad a pesar de que que Martha comienza a mostrar un interés que es más un interés amoroso que un amigo, colmándolo de elogios y creyéndose los chistes tontos del bar que hacen él y sus amigos. Encuentra su correo electrónico y aquí comienza a cambiar y demostrar su lado stalker, inundándolo de correos electrónicos, Donny inicialmente se preocupa un poco pero también parece intrigarlo, porque de alguna manera Martha tapa sus inseguridades y lo hace sentir mejor persona, así que aunque nota los primeros signos de malestar, no se preocupa, acepta su amistad en Facebook (y ella escribe comentarios debajo de cada foto, incluidas las más antiguas, con insultos si hay mujeres) la encuentra en su muestra comedia y ella se ríe, se ríe mucho y ayuda al público a reírse de su comedia decididamente pobre.
Se establece una relación muy extraña entre ambos, algo que a medida que crecen resulta cada vez más morboso, Donny se da cuenta del peligro de Martha lo cual impacta toda su vida pero al mismo tiempo es incapaz de despegarse por completo de ella. de hecho, en ciertos momentos incluso Donny se hace odiar por lo mucho que le gusta sumergirse en el drama.

Luego, la historia también se desarrolla con importantes flashbacks que nos ayudan a comprender mejor el personaje de Donny y sus fragilidades, sobre las cuales crecerá la dinámica enfermiza de la relación entre él y Martha. Los temas tratados tanto en el flashback como en el presente son a veces muy crudos y fuertes, con un lenguaje sexual explícito y a veces inquietante. Mucho se sabrá de la historia de Donny, un pasado de abuso de sustancias y traumas nunca resueltos, que lo llevan a ser un personaje extraño, extremo, doble, inconsistente, imprudente, inquieto.

Una serie que explora de forma irreverente y cruda algunos aspectos no precisamente agradables de la naturaleza humana y también un fenómeno muchas veces silenciado o negado, el acecho femenino. Todos estamos acostumbrados a identificar al acosador con un hombre, olvidando que también hay acosadoras. En mi opinión, esta serie tiene la gran ventaja de que te lleva tanto a empatizar con los personajes como a odiarlos precisamente porque muestra la naturaleza humana con toda su fragilidad, duplicidad y dolor. Es una serie que, aunque con un ligero toque cómico, transmite mucho dolor, el protagonista supo representar sus estados de ánimo oscuros y transmitirlos al espectador.

Me llamó mucho la atención su pasado donde ciertas escenas eran como puñetazos en el estómago, con una crudeza y un dolor que te hacían llorar. Creo que es una serie muy bien hecha y Gadd demostró ser muy bueno tanto como actor como como guionista. ¡Te recomiendo que lo veas porque vale la pena!
