Hablemos de: La sociedad de la nieve | Let's talk about: Society of the snow

Hola de nuevo! Hoy les traigo un post bastante chévere en el cual les hablaré sobre la película del momento, La Sociedad de la Nieve. Conocí un poco la historia debido a la película "Viven" de los años 90s. Esta historia de los 16 superviviente del accidente aéreo ocurrido en el año 1972 en la cordillera de los Andes resulta impactante y hasta milagroso, debido a todo lo que vivieron estos jóvenes por 72 días, y siento que hay mucho que decir de esta película de la que ya de por sí todos están hablando, este post será largo y quiero acotar que hablaré de la trama de la película así que habrán spoilers, comencemos!

Hello again! Today I come with a very cool post in which I will talk about the movie of the moment, The Snow Society. I knew a little bit of the story because of the movie "Viven" from the 90s. This story of the 16 survivors of the plane crash in 1972 in the Andes is shocking and even miraculous, because of everything that these young people lived for 72 days, and I feel that there is much to say about this movie that everyone is already talking about, this post will be long and I want to point out that I will talk about the plot of the movie so there will be spoilers, let's go!

Esta película dirigida por J.A Bayona fue estrenada en el año 2023 tanto en cines como en la plataforma de Netflix. La película narra la historia real de un equipo amateur de rugby proveniente de Uruguay que iban a ir a una competencia en Chile, para ello alquilan un avión de la fuerza aérea uruguaya que despega el 13 de Octubre de 1972. Todo esto narrado por uno de los pasajeros, Numa Turcatti, el cual no pertenecía al equipo pero fue invitado por unos amigos. Los jóvenes emprenden vuelo, la pasan bien por un rato pero notan mucha turbulencia, hasta que notan estar cerca de la montaña y ocurre el accidente. La escena del accidente es brutal, como el avión se destroza, como algunos salen despedidos y otros son aplastados por las sillas, en fin, una escena muy cruda. Los chicos se dan cuenta que están en medio de la nada en unas montañas llenas de nieve, van a ver la cabina del piloto y solo ven al copiloto agonizando, él solo llega a decir que cruzaron Curicó. Los jóvenes que nunca habían visto la nieve, e intentan entender qué pasó. La primera noche es la peor, mucho frío, mucha incertidumbre, muchas víctimas gritando, agonizando y muriendo, en la primera noche mueren algunas personas.

This film directed by J.A Bayona was released in 2023 both in cinemas and on the Netflix platform. The film tells the real story of an amateur rugby team from Uruguay who were going to go to a competition in Chile, for this they rent a plane from the Uruguayan air force that takes off on October 13, 1972. All this is narrated by one of the passengers, Numa Turcatti, who did not belong to the team but was invited by some friends. The young guys start flying, have a good time for a while but notice a lot of turbulence, until they notice that they are close to the mountain and the accident occurs. The scene of the accident is brutal, as the plane is destroyed, as some are thrown out and others are crushed by the chairs, anyway, a very raw scene. The guys realize that they are in the middle of nowhere in some mountains full of snow, they go to see the cockpit and only see the co-pilot in agony, he only manages to say that they crossed Curicó. The young people who had never seen snow, and try to understand what happened. The first night is the worst, much cold, much uncertainty, many victims screaming, agonizing and dying, in the first night some people die.

Desde el principio el liderazgo lo toma Marcelo Pérez, capitán del equipo de rugby quien se encarga de mantener la calma y distribuir los escasos alimentos que tienen a su disposición. Logran hacer un sistema para derretir la nieve y buscan abrigos. Pasan los días, Nando Parrado despierta de un coma dándose cuenta que su hermana está gravemente herida. La comida se acaba, por lo que desesperados comienzan a comer cosas como cigarrillos o trenzas de zapato lo cual les cae muy mal. Además la hermana de Nando, Susana, muere en sus brazos debido a la gravedad de sus heridas. Llega el dilema moral más importante, ya que uno de los chicos propone que hay carne afuera (los cuerpos) y que no pueden morir de hambre. Los chicos evidentemente se sienten muy mal por ello, ya que son jóvenes católicos, además son los cuerpos de sus amigos, pero poco a poco los chicos ceden debido al hambre tan intenso, todos menos Numa Turcatti terminan comiendo carne. Varios chicos dan su consentimiento de que si mueren pueden comer su cuerpo. Al arreglar la radio, en el día 10, se enteran de que las jornadas por su búsqueda cesaron por la intensa nieve y que volverán a buscarlos en febrero en el deshielo. Esto los desesperanza, se desesperan y no saben que hacer. Ese día es decisivo, ya que se dan cuenta que su supervivencia depende de ellos mismos y no de otros.

From the beginning, Marcelo Perez, captain of the rugby team, takes the leadership and distributes the limited food they have at their disposal. They manage to make a system to melt the snow and they look for shelters. As the days go by, Nando Parrado wakes up from a coma and realizes that his sister is seriously injured. Food runs out, so they desperately start eating things like cigarettes or shoe braids, which is very bad for them. In addition, Nando's sister, Susana, dies in his arms due to the severity of her injuries. The most important moral dilemma arrives, as one of the boys proposes that there is meat outside (the corpses) and that they cannot starve to death. The boys evidently feel very bad about this, since they are young catholics, plus they are the bodies of their friends, but little by little the boys give in due to the intense hunger, all but Numa Turcatti end up eating meat. Several boys give their consent that if they die they can eat his body. When they fix the radio, on day 10, they learn that the search for them has stopped because of the heavy snow and that they will search for them again in february during the thaw. This makes them desperate, they despair and do not know what to do. That day is decisive, as they realize that their survival depends on themselves and not on others.

El día 17 están todos tranquilos en el fuselaje, riendo y bromeando a pesar de la adversidad pero no contaban con que la madre naturaleza a veces no es compasiva. Ocurre una avalancha que entierra el fuselaje donde los chicos descansan, algunos logran salir pero la avalancha se cobró la vida de 8 supervivientes más, entre ellos Marcelo Pérez, el capitán del equipo, lo cual fue una pérdida muy dura para todos. Los chicos quedan atrapados entre la nieve y los cuerpos por unos días, la falta de oxígeno es desesperante, pero gracias a que la nieve poco a poco se derretía y su determinación, lograron salir. Se realizan más expediciones, Numa, Nando, Tintín y Roberto se embarcan en la búsqueda de entender donde están, afortunadamente un día encuentran la cola del avión con equipaje y varias cosas útiles, incluyendo una radio para poder comunicarse, sin embargo a pesar de los esfuerzos para arreglarla no funcionó la radio. Poco a poco todo va cuesta abajo, Nando quiere explorar el oeste para buscar ayuda pero se niegan ya que es una expedición extremadamente peligrosa.

On the 17th they are all calm in the fuselage, laughing and joking despite the adversity but they did not count on the fact that mother nature sometimes is not compassionate. An avalanche occurs and buries the fuselage where the boys are resting, some survive but the avalanche claims the lives of 8 more survivors, among them Marcelo Perez, the captain of the team, which was a very painful loss for everyone. The boys were trapped between the snow and the bodies for a few days, the lack of oxygen was desperate, but thanks to the melting snow and their determination, they managed to get out. More expeditions are made, Numa, Nando, Tintin and Roberto embark on the search to understand where they are, fortunately one day they find the tail of the plane with luggage and several useful things, including a radio to communicate, however despite the efforts to fix it, the radio did not work. Little by little everything goes downhill, Nando wants to explore the west to look for help but they refuse as it is an extremely dangerous expedition.

Poco a poco mueren otros compañeros, Arturo Nogueira y Rafael Echavarren por una sepsis debido a sus heridas. Numa poco a poco se va poniendo más y más enfermo, quiere ayudar y se siente inútil pero en un punto sabe que está muriendo. Numa una día está demasiado débil y muere durante la noche, siendo una muerte muy dura debido a que además de ser el narrador de la historia, fue muy importante para el equipo. Antes de morir logró escribir un pasaje de la biblia que decía "no hay amor más grande que aquel que da la vida por sus amigos". La muerte de Numa y esa poderosa frase convencen a Roberto de que deben buscar ayuda. Nando, Roberto y Tintín se embarcaron en ello, equipándose con bolsas de dormir, carne y otras cosas, sin embargo por varios motivos Tintín se regresó al fuselaje. Nando y Roberto caminan 10 días, en algunos momentos piensan en regresar pero saben que sería una muerte segura. Caminan con las fuerzas que les quedan, con algo de esperanza de conseguir ayuda, sin embargo Roberto cada vez está más débil, la carne se va dañando y parece que todo puede ir mal. Llegan a un gran río donde logran hidratarse, sin saber que haber llegado hasta ese valle sería la respuesta de que los milagros existen.

Little by little other friends, Arturo Nogueira and Rafael Echavarren die of sepsis due to their wounds. Numa gradually gets more and more sick, he wants to help and feels useless but at a certain point he knows he is dying. Numa one day is too weak and dies during the night, being a very hard death because besides being the narrator of the story, he was very important for the team. Before dying he managed to write a passage from the bible that said "there is no greater love than that which gives its life for its friends". The death of Numa and that powerful phrase convince Roberto that they must seek help. Nando, Roberto and Tintin embark on it, equipping themselves with sleeping bags, meat and other things, however for different reasons Tintin went back to the fuselage. Nando and Roberto walk for 10 days, at times they think about returning but they know it would be certain death. They walk with the strength they have left, with some hope of getting help, however Roberto is getting weaker and weaker, his flesh is getting damaged and it seems that everything could go wrong. They reach a large river where they manage to hydrate themselves, without knowing that having reached that valley would be the answer that miracles exist.

Llegando allí se dan cuenta de que puede haber presencia humana, a lo que llega un arriero en caballo al otro lado del río. El arriero les lanza un roca con papel para escribir una nota, Nando en resumen escribe de donde son, que vienen de un avión que se estrelló en las montañas, hay 14 heridos ahí, mueren de hambre y quieren saber donde están. Sergio Catalán, el arriero, recibe la nota, les da pan a Nando y Roberto, pide a sus compañeros arrieros que los lleven a las cabañas y va en busca ayuda cabalgando 10 horas para ello. Luego de descansar bastante, Nando se monta en helicóptero de la fuerza aérea chilena para buscar a sus compañeros, no sin antes mostrar al padre de Carlitos Paez (interpretado por el verdadero Carlitos Paez) nombrando a los supervivientes. Los chicos sabiendo que los rescatarían se arreglan, se peinan, se cepillan los dientes ya que se saben que volverán a ser humanos plenos y cuando llegan los helicópteros es un momento muy conmovedor. Los chicos se abrazan, festejan, lloran, sonríen y agradecen estar vivos, sin embargo al irse en helicóptero observan con nostalgia el fuselaje que alguna vez fue su hogar. Al llegar a civilización se trasladan a Uruguay y allí son recibidos como unos héroes. Sin embargo, Numa nos cuenta lo críticos que llegaron los chicos, que ellos ya no son los mismos, no se sienten héroes y se preguntan porque no regresaron todos, pero que ellos están vivos para cuidarse unos a los otros y contar la historia de los que ya no están.

Arriving there they realize that there may be human presence, to which a muleteer on horseback arrives on the other side of the river. The muleteer throws them a rock with paper to write a note, Nando in short writes where they are from, that they come from a plane that crashed in the mountains, there are 14 wounded there, they are starving and want to know where they are. Sergio Catalán, the muleteer, receives the note, gives bread to Nando and Roberto, asks his fellow muleteers to take them to the cabins and goes to look for help, riding 10 hours to do so. After getting plenty of rest, Nando gets on a Chilean air force helicopter to look for his companions, but not before showing the father of Carlitos Paez (played by the real Carlitos Paez) naming the survivors. The boys, knowing that they would be rescued, get dressed, comb their hair, brush their teeth as they know they will be full humans again and when the helicopters arrive it is a very touching moment. The boys hug, celebrate, cry, smile and are grateful to be alive, but as they leave the helicopter they look longingly at the fuselage that was once their home. When they reach civilization, they are transported to Uruguay where they are received as heroes. But Numa tells us how critical the boys were, that they are no longer the same, that they no longer feel like heroes and wonder why they did not all return, but that they are alive to take care of each other and tell the story of those who are no longer there.

Como conclusión final quiero decir varias cosas, la primera es que esta película me pareció excelente en aspectos estéticos, la banda sonora es muy buena y te ayuda a adentrarte en la historia, estuvo a cargo de Michael Giacchino, la fotografía es impecable, los planos y las tomas son excelente. Es una película casi documental que te embarca en una experiencia en parte sensorial, te sientes parte de ellos y quieres que se salven, también muestra como el ser humano es capaz de llegar a decisiones extremas para sobrevivir. Otra cosa que hay que acotar son eventos puntuales que son importantes en la película y que a mí me llegaron, el primero es mostrar a todos los pasajeros antes del vuelo, sus personalidades y sus vidas antes de la tragedia, el segundo es el momento del accidente el cual es muy crudo y desesperante, el tercero es la desesperanza que sienten al enterarse que no los buscarán, el cuarto es la avalancha donde todo parece esperanzador pero que es opacado con más muerte, y el último es el momento del rescate, el cual me hizo llorar genuinamente ya que al ser una película tan inmersiva, de algún modo me sentí rescatada también, sentí que al final si había esperanza a pesar de todo. En la vida real este hecho trajo mucho morbo en los medios, pero la película abarca todo con mucha sensibilidad, la antropofagia lo tratan como dilema moral y no lo muestran de manera cruda, tampoco es el tema central. La considero una de las mejores películas basadas en hechos reales que, además, cuida mucho los detalles cinematográficos, es humana, reflexiva y conmovedora. La recomiendo muchísimo y también recomiendo conocer la historia real de los verdaderos supervivientes, ya que es una historia contundente de superación y reflexión.

As a final conclusion I want to say several things, the first is that I found this film excellent in aesthetic aspects, the soundtrack is very good and helps you get into the story, it was in charge of Michael Giacchino, the photography is impeccable, the shots and the shots are excellent. It is an almost documentary film that takes you on a partly sensory experience, you feel part of them and want them to be saved, it also shows how human beings are capable of extreme decisions to survive. Another thing that should be noted are specific events that are important in the film and that got to me, the first is to show all the passengers before the flight, their personalities and their lives before the tragedy, the second is the moment of the accident which is very raw and desperate, the third is the despair they feel when they learn that they will not be looked for, the fourth is the avalanche where everything seems hopeful but is overshadowed with more death, and the last is the moment of rescue, which made me genuinely cry because being such an immersive film, somehow I felt rescued too, I felt that in the end there was hope in spite of everything. In real life this fact brought a lot of morbidity in the media, but the film covers everything with great sensitivity, anthropophagy is treated as a moral dilemma and it is not shown in a crude way, nor is it the central theme. I consider it one of the best films based on real events that, in addition, takes great care of the cinematographic details, it is human, reflective and touching. I highly recommend it and I also recommend knowing the real story of the real survivors, as it is a powerful story of overcoming and reflection.
