Dwayne Johnson's Red One: A Festive Miss or Hit?
A new movie called Red One has recently arrived on Netflix, which is one of the most hyped movies of the month. There is a lot of talk about this movie because it has fulfilled everything that the audience expected. It is a fantasy-based adventure movie, whose main genre is action-comedy, which is generally very popular with people.
Star-Studded Cast and First Impressions
Personally, I like action-comedy movies a lot. Talking about the casting, it has some big stars—Dwayne Johnson, as well as some other familiar faces. Many of the actors in this movie have previously worked in Marvel and DC movies, which is why they are so popular. I personally got a bit of a mixed reaction to watching this movie. I saw it a while ago, and before telling my review, I will give you a little idea of its story.
Plot Overview (No Major Spoilers)
If you have seen the trailer, you will understand that this is a Christmas-based movie. In the story of the movie, "Santa," who is called "Red", is kidnapped. Then "The Rock" (Dwayne Johnson), who is like a Santa's advisor and bodyguard, comes out to save him. He is joined by another character, who is technically proficient. This is how their expedition begins and how they find Santa or not, is the main story of the movie.
What Worked: The Good Stuff
The beginning of the movie was good. I was optimistic, because I wanted to see these actors together. However, although everything was fine for 10-20 minutes, the movie fell flat from then on. I watched the movie with high hopes, but it was a complete disappointment.
What Didn’t Work: The Disappointments
The biggest problem that I felt was the presentation of the story. The movie is almost two hours long, but it shouldn't be that long. Usually if we watch a movie of our favorite genre, the time passes quickly, but here it started to get boring halfway through.
Another big problem is the villain of the movie. The one who has been cast as the villain, he seems very weak. Although his acting was good, especially if you have watched the Netflix series "Sabrina", you will recognize him. But he is shown very little time and his character is not developed properly. It did not feel like he can really do anything.
The entire movie revolves around Dwayne Johnson. It felt like I was watching a superhero movie instead of a Christmas movie. There were only 1-2 action scenes, of which the middle one was completely predictable and boring, and the end was quite good.
Although I liked some things, like the right actor was chosen for the role of Santa. His look really suited him. Also, some of the VFX and makeup were good. I liked the part with the polar bear, although he did not contribute much to the story.
Final Thoughts and Rating
Personally, I am a fan of action-comedy movies and Dwayne Johnson, so it might be worth watching once. If you like fantasy-adventure, you may enjoy it. But it is not right to have too many expectations.
If I had to give my rating, I would give it a 6 out of 10.
