CineTV Contest: Shaun of the Dead

The 100th contest! Wow!!!

You know? Having no limit on which movie to pick for this one wasn’t as easy as I thought, but finally I decided to talk about one of my favorite movies.

I like zombie movies a lot, so I’ve watched a lot… even the weird ones like Coronazombies… but I’ll talk about Shaun of the Dead. Some time ago I wrote about it but just as a mention to talk about favorite song in a movie, but I haven’t written a full review about it.

This is a parody of Dawn of the dead, where they criticize consumerism and how infected or not, humans are wild no matter what… in here is a criticism to rutinary life and how the world can be falling apart and a person so self-involved doesn’t realize what’s happening.

The main plot is about a group of survivors who want to get through the zombie apocalypse, to do so, Shaun’s plan is to hide in his favorite bar because that’s his safe place. They lose some allies on the way and must make sacrifices in order to survive and in the end only two of them survive… well two and a half because Shaun keeps his zombified best friend hidden and playing videogames…

What’s good about it, it’s that they show how rutinary Shaun’s life is, he feels like a loser who hates his job where a teenager is his boss and no one takes seriously, his girlfriend Liz breaks up with him because she sees him as immature and with no future and who always goes to the same bar everyday no matter the occasion and his mom is kinda upset that Shaun, in spite of being an adult acts like a kid in regard of her new boyfriend, a good man who wants to be a role model for Shaun but the step son sees him as a villain.

And one might think that with zombies roaming his priorities will change, but, well, not really… With or without zombies, he walks every morning to the nearby store to grab a yogurt, not paying attention to his surroundings so he doesn’t notice when the store is a mess, or when the persons he sees everyday on his way to the store are now living dead, and when he finally sees hell broke loose, his instinct is to go to his favorite bar anyway, as always.
It reflects how sometimes we barely pay attention to our surroundings because we’re so focused on what’s on our minds and doing the same things every day, routine really is a killer.

During the zombie apocalypse, we see Shaun become a leader, a hero who wants to save his girlfriend, his mom and his stepfather along with his friends, he becomes the unsuspected hero but is far from heroic, he still is a silly man who messes up, but that fact ads a bit of realism to the situation, because we all think that during an emergency we would be focused and be the heroes, but in reality no one really knows what kind of person we would be during emergencies until they arrive, and Shaun proves to be a caring and brave man who still doesn’t know what he’s doing and doesn’t get all the answers, but his main goal is to save the ones he cares about.

When everything ends, we see a somewhat new Shaun who now lives happy with his girlfriend, but still he has the same routine to go to the store, go to work, have a drink and play videogames with his now zombified friend Ed, and as for the rest of the zombies, some are used for hard work, others for entertainment on tv, somehow they are reintegrated into the new society where everything changed but at the same time remained the same.

Personally I like this movie because it’s funny, it’s refreshing to see a different kind of humor than the one I’m used to from Holliwood movies or the Mexican ones, it’s humor is subtle and constant, it’s a must see if you like zombie movies or British comedies, and it’s really easy to identify ourselves with the protagonist which is a random man, it’s not like Resident Evil where the hero is a woman with super human habilities, or like World War Z where the hero is a man with many resources at hand.

This is basically a love story, where Shaun wants to regain Liz's love and trust, and he takes risks just to save her, so there's love, there's comedy and also there's sad moments, like when Shaun has to say goodbye to her mother in a very touching scene.

Even though this is a 2004 movie, it's easy to see today's society reflected in this movie, I can easily imagine someone walking with cellphone in hand not paying attention to zombies nearby, and then making zombie videos for likes and followers just like this movie shows how they use zombies for silly contests on tv.

¡¡Vaya, el concurso número 100!! ¡increíble!¿Saben? no tener límite sobre cual película elegir no fue tan fácil como pensaba, pero finalmente me decidí por hablar de una de mis tantas favoritas.Amo las películas de zombies, así que he visto demasiadas... incluso las raras como Coronazombies... pero hablaré sobre El Desesperar de los Muertos. Hace un tiempo escribí sobre ella pero solo como mención para hablar sobre canción favorita en películas, pero no he escrito una review completa sobre ella.Esta es una parodia del Despertar de los muertos, en donde critican el consumismo y como infectados o no, los humanos son salvajes sin importar nada... aquí la crítica es hacia la vida rutinaria y como el mundo puede estar desmoronándose y una persona envuelta en sus propios asuntos no se da cuenta de lo que pasa.La historia principal es sobre un grupo de sobrevivientes que quieren sobrevivir el apocalipsis zombie, para hacerlo, el plan de Shaun es esconderse en su bar favorito porque es su sitio seguro. Pierden aliados en el camino y deben hacer sacrificios para sobrevivir, y al final solo dos de ellos sobreviven... bueno dos y medio porque Shaun mantiene oculto a su mejor amigo zombificado y jugando videojuegos...Lo que tiene de bueno, es que muestran cuan rutinaria es la vida de Shawn, se siente todo un perdedor quien odia su trabajo donde un adolescente es su jefe y nadie lo toma en serio, su novia Liz rompe con el porque lo ve como inmaduro y sin futuro, quien siempre va al mismo bar todos los días sin importar la ocasión y su madre está decepcionada de que Shaun a pesar de ser un adulto actúa como niño en cuanto a su nueva pareja, un hombre bueno que quiere ser un modelo a seguir para Shaun pero su hijastro lo ve como villano.Y uno podría pensar que con zombies rondando las prioridades cambiarán, pero, bueno, en realidad no... Con o sin zombies, Shaun todos los días va a la tienda cercana, compra un yogurt, no pone atención a sus alrededores así que no se da cuenta que la tienda es un desastre, o que las personas que ve a diario en su camino a la tienda ahora son muertos vivientes, y cuando por fin ve que todo el infierno se desató, su instinto es ir a su bar favorito de cualquier modo, como siempre.Refleja como a veces ponemos poca atención a nuestro alrededor por estar tan enfocados en lo que pasa en nuestras cabezas, y haciendo las mismas cosas todos los días, la rutina realmente es una asesina.Durante el apocalipsis zombie, vemos a Shaun convertirse en líder, un héroe que quiere salvar a su novia, su madre y padrastro junto a sus amigos, se convierte en el héroe inesperado pero está lejos de ser heroico, sigue siendo un hombre torpe que se equivoca, pero eso le añade un poco de realismo a la situación, porque todos pensamos que durante una emergencia seremos los enfocados y los héroes, pero en realidad nadie sabemos que clase de persona seremos durante una emergencia hasta que ocurren, y Shaun prueba ser un hombre que se preocupa y es valiente pero sigue sin saber lo que hace y no tiene todas las respuestas, pero su meta principal es salvar a los que quiere.Cuando todo termina, vemos a un nuevo Shaun que vive feliz con su novia, pero todavía tiene la misma rutina de ir a la tienda, al trabajo, beber algo y jugar videojuegos con su ahora zombificado amigo Ed, y en cuanto al resto de los zombies, algunos son usados para el trabajo duro, otros para entretenimiento en TV, de alguna manera están reintegrados a la nueva sociedad donde todo cambió pero al mismo tiempo se mantuvo igual.Personalmente me gusta esta película por ser divertida, es refrescante ver un tipo diferente de humor al que estoy acostumbrada de Holliwood o películas Mexicanas, es humor sutil y constante, es una película que deben ver si les gustan las de zombies o comedias británicas, y es muy fácil identificarnos con el protagonista por ser un hombre cualquiera, no es como en Resident Evil donde la heroína es una mujer con habilidades de super humana, o como en Guerra mundial Z donde el héroe es un hombre con muchos recursos al alcance.Básicamente esta es una historia de amor, donde Shaun quiere reconquistar a Liz y ganar su confianza, y toma riesgos solo por salvarla, así que tiene amor, tiene comedia y también momentos tristes, como ese donde Shaun tiene que decir adiós a su mamá en una escena muy conmovedora.A pesar de ser una película del 2004, es fácil ver la sociedad actual reflejada en la película, fácilmente puedo imaginar a alguien caminar con su celular en mano sin poner atención a los zombies al rededor, y luego haciendo videos por likes y seguidores con zombies tal como la película muestra como usan a los zombies para concursos ridículos en televisión.
