When Evil Lurks

When I went to watch this movie a month ago, I wasn't really expecting much because every time a movie of this genre comes out, it's announced as the most terrifying movie of all times and they turn to be not that good.

I hadn't seen the trailer or read any comments from this movie before watching it, I only saw a meme with cats talking about how scary the movie was; and the only reason I got to see that meme was because I was going to the movies with my friends later that day and one of them tagged us all in said post.
The horror began at the cinema itself, I wanted to buy a hot dog and they already ran out of them... it was supposed to be my main meal instead of only eat popcorn that afternoon. Anyway, after a long wait in line hoping for a hot dog that never came and ending up purchasing a sweet crepe and a panini we finally got to our seats only to find ourselves in an almost empty room, that's weird considering the movie was a premier that week.
The movie started and from the beginning it caught my attention and interest, it has really good scenes and you get immersed in the plot. Usually the narrative in this kind of movies starts with the protagonists having a good time on any given day before the terror unleashes, but in this story they start right at the conflict which makes us the spectator, identify ourselves with the protagonists because we don't know what's going on either and we go figuring out everything along with the characters.

The story

It all begins in a small town in Argentina, home of two brothers: Pedro and Jimmy, who one night hear gun shots not so far away from their home in the middle of the field, as soon as the sun comes up, the brothers go out to investigate and they find a dismembered body; this movie gives us here a good gore scene without being over the top; looking through the body’s belongings they find an antique gadget of some sort, they don’t know what it is, they also find a map and the copy of an ID that belongs to one of their neighbors that live ahead of the field, they go visit her to inform her that whoever she was expecting to come won’t arrive because he died on his way.

Maria, the neighbor, tells them that said person was someone who was going to take care of her older son, Uriel, who suffered a unique condition, she said he was “bugged”, which is a way of calling the “incarnated” in other words, someone who has been possessed by evil.
The brothers see Uriel who looks way to bloated and full of filth, blood and pus among other things that made me forget at that moment to eat my crepe filled with jam…
Uriel can barely talk and he just asks to be killed, but they can’t simply kill him, otherwise the evil inside him would be free, that’s why he has to be killed by a specialist… yes, the same specialist that was murdered on his way.

The brothers get scared by the fact of having an incarnated in town and want to kill him already, but Maria asks them not to do it, not so much for mercy but for not to spread evil. The brothers go to the authorities to tell them about the incarnated one and ask them to make another specialist come to town, but the cops don’t do anything about it and they say they’ve been aware of the case for a year, and they don’t believe it has something to do with an incarnated one.

Pedro and Jimmy go with Mr. Ruiz to tell him everything because he’s the owner of the lands nearby where they and Maria live along with her incarnated son and her younger son.
Without second thoughts, Ruiz gets a gun and heads to Maria´s house, but Maria and the brothers persuade him not to harm Uriel, so Ruiz decides that the best thing to do is take Uriel out of town, get rid of him far away and simply wait for him to die, and if evil gets free it wouldn’t be near and would be somebody else’s problem.

The three men barely manage to get Uriel’s huge and grotesque body out the house, they get him on the back of a truck and start their way out of town far away from their lands. On the way, a boy on a bike makes them violently turn in order not to run over him. The men keep driving some more miles and decide they’re at a good spot to get rid of Uriel… but they get a surprise when they realize Uriel is no longer there, they assume he fell when they avoided hitting that boy on bike
They go back to their respective homes and think the problem is over, they don’t care about Uriel’s body being missing because the area where they lost him was isolated, no one would see him… If only everything were that easy her would end the story, but it’s actually just the beginning.

Ruiz goes back to his pregnant wife who is waiting for him at home, none of them suspects that evil is already nearby. The woman watches the goats they have on their lands and scared yells for her husband to tell him that one of the goats is possessed… I don’t know how she could tell that since all goats seemed normal, but Ruiz shoots a bullet in the air making all goats except one to run away, the lone goat stares at them and in a defying manner it approaches them and places its head at the end of the gun. Ruiz has a little doubt but ends up shooting at it. His wife freaks out because she knows that evil will spread because he killed the animal and there’s no way to scape from it, she grabs an axe and ends up not only with her husband’s life but hers too along with her unborn child’s

In the meantime, Pedro and Jimmy are at their home where they feel haunted during the day, at night they see shadows and sense something different, fear and doubt start to embrace them and before they can find any explanation to their fears, they are visited by Maria’s younger son, who lets them know that Ruiz and his wife are dead and also that his mom Maria is missing, the boy blames everything on the brothers because they took Uriel away and unleashed evil.
The boy asks them if he can stay because he doesn’t want to go back alone to his home, they let him stay on a barn and the brothers decide to leave town next morning after picking up their mother and Pedro’s sons, who live with their mother and her new partner along with their little stepsister.

Pedro arrives where his sons are while Jimmy searches for someone he knows who could help. Pedro knows he’s impregnated with evil just by having touched Uriel when they carried him to get him out of town, so he gets rid of all of his clothes while calling loudly for his sons, he also asks some clothes to his ex-wife. The Ex-wife thinks he’s crazy just by his looks and attitude talking about incarnated ones and evil lurking.
While they’re arguing, the evil Pedro brought starts affecting the area, being the family dog the vessel of evil after it sniffed Pedro’s clothes on the floor. In one unexpected movement, the dog attacks the little girl of the family in a very wild way… I’ve got to say I liked this scene because of the visual impact and the unexpected action, because in no moment the dog gave any clue of having a different attitude until it launched itself to attack.
The dog runs away dragging the girl, her parents run desperately after them while Pedro goes to get his sons, Santino the youngest who was traumatized after witnessing the attack, and his oldest Yahir who has autism and it takes a while to convince him to get up and leave.

A few moments later, the girl comes back as if nothing happened, her mother embraces the child in her arms relieved to see her, she doesn’t even wonder why the child has no harm after such a brutal attack. The father had drove in his truck to chase the dog so he isn’t near to see his little girl; the girl smiles mischievously at her mom and tells her: “daddy will come and will kill you like this… pum” and at the time she says pum she claps her hands implying an impact, a few seconds later the father rolls over both of them and because of the crash the three of them die.
Pedro gets his sons on a car and flee the place to gather with Jimmy and his mother. Together they start a trip to meet up with the person who is an expert in the incarnated ones, and during the trip, Santino asks what are the bugged ones, his grandmom tells him there are rules that aren’t meant to be broken, otherwise evil will get into their heads and will make them do horrible things.

Rules are: do not use electric light, don’t be nearby animals, don’t carry anything that was in contact with any bugged one, do not harm them and never call them by their names, those names are demons’ names.
When they were still on the road, the old woman gets a call from Sabrina, Pedro’s ex-wife, and he knows this is impossible because he watched her die, in spite of that he grabs the phone and answers, Sabrina tells him she will have her sons back, Pedro knows she’s the evil itself coming after them.
Sabrina arrives to Mirta’s place to get her kids, but her appearance is very damaged and bruised, even with her injuries she manages to take Santino with her.

The brothers Split up, Jimmi goes to look for Sabrina to rescue Santino, however when he finds the, it’s already to late, he sees them in the middle of an isolated road surrounded by darkness, Sabrina is eating something and when Jimmy gets a closer look, he realizes she’s eating her own son, very casually as if she were eating tasty popcorn out of a bowl, that’s another unexpected shocking scene thanks to the subtle way of showing how she’s eating without being an unnecessary long scene, but even being short it manages to show the detail of the possessed mother devouring her innocent son.

Pedro and Mirta go to the opposite direction to search for Uriel, and this time get rid of him in the proper way to stop evil. Mirta takes with her some old gadgets, just like the ones the expert murdered in the beginning had.

Mirta explains that years ago, at a church she and her husband managed, a bugged one arrived from Buenos Aires, they thought he was lying about his condition until the infected one threw up, they saw the vomit and could see some human body parts there, the bugged one had eaten his own family. Also, Mirta lets Jimmy know that the evil that’s already lurking now is just a little taste of what it could be, because evil’s plan is to be reborn in a new body after growing inside a host, in this scenario that host being Uriel, so there’s no time to waste because let’s remember that Uriel has been like that for at least a year.
Meanwhile, back at Mirta’s home, where Yahir and his grandma stayed, the grandson approaches her and starts talking in a very eloquent and fluid manner, that way letting know that the demon inside him has figured out how his mind works and took control of Yahir. The woman stares at her grandson who keeps approaching her in a menacing way.

Pedro and Mirta finally arrive to where Pedro is sure Uriel fell when they were taking him out of town, not so far away there’s a school and they notice there are kids inside even though it’s nighttime and everything is dark. Mirta is sure they aren’t kids anymore but evil protecting Uriel.
The kids try to persuade Pedro and Mirta to leave, they trick them just to get them away from Uriel but eventually they find him. Uriel was hidden under a pile of dead bodies, the victims of evil were the kids´ parents and teachers.
Mirta starts to get everything ready to use her gadget and get rid of Uriel, the children trick Pedro to get him away from Mirta so he can’t help Mirta against Uriel, once they’re split up, the children kill Mirta before she can use her gadget. Desperated, Pedro grabs a piece of the gadget and starts bashing Uriel’s head with it until he dies, but this isn’t helpful in any way because he didn’t use the gadget correctly and evil couldn’t be stopped.

From beneath the parents and teachers bodies where Uriel was hidden, a child covered in blood comes out, it looks like a birth due to the way he arrived to this world, and in fact it’s a birth, evil got what it wanted and got reborn in spite of the brothers’ efforts to stop its release.
Pedro falls to his knees, beaten against evil in its new body, this evil kid touches the man’s forehead leaving a trail of blood, he doesn’t do anything else to him, he simply leaves school followed by the rest of the kids, all of them walk freely through the fields as a new day begins, we don’t know where they head to, but what’s known is the fact that evil is totally free, and if everything that happened in town was just a small taste of its power, now that evil is reborn it will for sure bring a bigger chaos.
Pedro, hopeless, heads back to Mirta’s place to get together with his mom and Yahir, knowing that even though it wasn’t in a favorable way, everything is over. Pedro gathers with Jimmy who lets him know what happened with Santino.

The brothers try to carry on with their lives the more normal possible way in spite of the nightmare they went through. They go back with Yahir to their own home. Jimmy goes to the barn to see the kid they let them stay there before, Uriel’s brother. The kid reveals that he was the one who murdered the man that was going to deal with Uriel at the beginning because a voice inside his head told him to. Shocked, Jimmy asks the kid what happened to his mother, to which the kid answers: “the same that happened to yours”.
At the same time, Pedro gives Yahir some ice cream to give him time to take a shower, there he notices that no matter how many time he washes his face, the mark evil left on his forehead remains there, he’s been marked permanently. When he comes out of the bathroom, Pedro notices Yahir is choking with the ice cream, Pedro helps him to get whatever is obstructing his throat out and makes him puke, he vomits not only the ice cream but also hair and a necklace his grandmother used to wear that represented her family… an evil possessed Yahir devoured his own grandmother… just like Maria was eaten by her youngest son just because evil told him to do so.
Pedro leaves the house and Jimmy gets out of the barn, both brothers finding themselves in the middle, the two of them know that evil won and they are still surrounded by it in spite of their efforts and there’s nothing they can do about it.

** My Opinion**

I liked it because it’s different than all of the other movies that have persons possessed in them, the ones where evil is faced with prayers and a lot of faith, here the solution is a mistic old gadget that just a few know how to use and in the end it didn’t make any difference having it around, in my opinion that reflects reality, there’s no quick magic solution to all problems, evil exists and it’s not going to disappear from one day to another. Evil spreads, not as literal as they show it here being spread by touch, but we all are one way or another manipulated by persons around us, it’s up to each one of us to know how much influence they will have and how deep they will get in our heads.

It’s usual to see movies and tv shows where the hero or heroine arrives and they save whoever is being haunted by demons, the hero surrounded by allies defeat evil with a special weapon or skill, and after a hard battle where they face evil incarnated and their own inner demons, they come out victorious, and even if evil survives, the heroes are prepared for a next time and there’s hope in the air to whatever comes ahead… but not here, the specialists with the quick and certain solution aren’t a treat for evil, there’s no heroes and in fact, there aren’t villains either, there’s just regular persons giving in or resisting against the voices and thoughts evil gets in their heads, and the end is bitter, there’s no sense of winning, no hope, there’s just the emptiness of a whole story where the main characters go back to their starting point defeated and knowing that in stead of stopping evil, they were the ones who helped to spread it faster and farther than it would have been if they hadn’t got near Uriel and not taking him to another place.
I also enjoyed the way they let us know background stories by revealing little clues, for example, there’s a part where one of the characters says that one of the signs of evil being nearby, is that there’s no sound, not even from crickets or any other animal, and if you pay attention, there are parts where there’s absolute silence, you don’t see any possessed person nearby but you know evil is there, you feel the trail of hollowness evil leaves behind, and in the end when the brothers are together in their backyard, it’s easy to tell they’re surrounded by evil because there isn’t any sound nearby, what once was a small town filled with movement now is a place covered by evil.

Also, the movie is disturbing because of how graphic it is, and as I mentioned before, it doesn’t exaggerate on it’s bloody scenes, and it doesn’t turn to classic jump scares as many other movies do, those which lost charm after being over used in different movies.
This is one of those movies that when you watch them again, you find many more details you missed the first time, I know that once I watch it again I’ll notice many more things that will add up even more stories told with their subtle clues, those stories being the ones about the past of each one of the characters, which let you know that even before Uriel showed up, they all had some evil in their nature because they did things they knew were wrong, but they show no remorse.
The concept of calling them incarnated was interesting, first it related it to skin being infected because of an ingrown toenail (in Spanish ingrown toenail is called uña encarnada, and the infected ones were called Encarnados), Uriel’s body was like that, all skin on his body infected. And as the plot moved forward and they let us know that’s what they called the possessed ones, the concept of incarnated changed to now being incarnations of evil, so that word world for the ones who have the belief that there are demons amongst us, and for those who want to see the logic or medical side of it, an incarnated one is someone going through a possession just as is someone going through a painful infection, it depends on the perspective each one wants to take.
I recommend this movie because it’s not as predictable as you expect, and it has a very good story built on many levels, you have the main plot and sub plots that enrich the whole story without leaving any lose ends.

Cuando Acecha la Maldad

Cuando fui a ver esta película hace aproximadamente un mes, en realidad no esperaba mucho ya que siempre que sale una película de este género aseguran que es la película más terrorífica de la era y resultan no ser tan buenas tramas.

De esta película no había visto el avance, ni había leído comentarios, solo vi un meme de gatos charlando, diciendo que era una película muy terrorífica; y solo vi este meme porque iba a ir con unas amigas al cine a verla unas horas más tarde y una de ellas nos etiquetó en dicha publicación.

El terror comenzó cuando al llegar al cine yo quería comprar un hotdog y ya no tenían… se supone eso iba a ser mi comida “formal” en vez de solo comer palomitas esa tarde. En fin, luego de una larga espera en fila para recibir la negativa sobre el hotdog y terminar comprando una crepa dulce y un panini entramos a la sala la cual estaba con muy poca gente para tratarse de una película en estreno esa semana.

La película comenzó y ya desde el inicio captó mi atención e interés, tiene buenas escenas y te empieza a envolver la trama de suspenso. Usualmente la narrativa de películas del género comienza con los protagonistas teniendo un buen rato en un día cualquiera antes de que comience a desatarse el terror, pero en esta historia comienzan con el conflicto el cual causa al espectador identificarse con los protagonistas por no saber qué está ocurriendo e ir descubriendo con ellos la situación.

La Historia

La vecina, María, les dice que esa persona era alguien que se haría cargo de su hijo mayor, Uriel, quien se encuentra “embichado”, lo cual es una forma de llamar a los “encarnados” o poseídos por el mal.
Los hermanos ven a Uriel quien luce demasiado hinchado y lleno de suciedad, sangre y pus entre otras cosas que me hicieron en ese rato olvidarme de querer comer mi crepa rellena de mermelada…

Uriel a duras penas puede hablar y solo pide que lo maten, pero no lo pueden simplemente matar ya que el mal dentro de él se esparciría, por eso tiene que liquidarlo un especialista… si, ese especialista que murió asesinado en el camino.
Los hermanos se alteran por saber que hay un encarnado en el pueblo y lo quieren matar, pero María les pide no lo hagan, no por piedad a su hijo sino para no esparcir el mal. Los hermanos acuden con las autoridades para informarles del encarnado y piden que hagan venir a otro especialista, pero las autoridades no hacen nada y dicen que ya estaban enterados del caso desde hace un año atrás y que no creen se trate de un embichado.

Pedro y Jimmy van con el señor Ruiz para ponerlo al tanto ya que el es dueño de las tierras cerca de donde viven ellos y María con su hijo encarnado y su hijo menor.
Ruiz sin pensarlo mucho va armado a casa de María pero ella y los hermanos lo persuaden de no dispararle a Uriel, así que Ruiz decide que lo mejor es sacar a Uriel del pueblo, abandonarlo lejos y simplemente esperar a que muera y cuando el mal se libere sea lejos y problema de otros.

Con dificultad sacan el grotesco cuerpo de la casa, lo cargan a una camioneta y emprenden camino lo suficientemente lejos de sus tierras. En el camino un niño en bicicleta se les atraviesa y apenas logran esquivarlo, avanzan unos kilómetros más y deciden que esa zona es buen punto para deshacerse de Uriel… pero se llevan una gran sorpresa al ver que Uriel no está y suponen se cayó cuando esquivaron a aquel niño en el camino.

Regresan a casa dando por terminado el asunto, ya que la zona por donde pudo haber caído Uriel está lejos y nadie lo verá… si tan solo todo fuera tan fácil aquí terminaría la historia, pero en realidad apenas comienza.
Ruiz tranquilo va a su casa donde su esposa embarazada lo espera, ninguno sospecha que la maldad ya los persigue. La mujer observa a las cabras que tienen en sus tierras y asustada le grita a Ruiz para decirle que una de ellas está poseída… no sé cómo pudo darse cuenta ya que todas las cabras juntas se ven normales, pero Ruiz dispara al aire haciendo que todas las cabras huyan excepto una, la cual se queda mirándolo y de forma desafiante se acerca a la boca del arma, Ruiz duda un poco, pero al final le dispara. Su esposa enloquece porque sabe que al haber matado al animal poseído liberó la maldad y no hay escapatoria, ella toma un hacha y acaba no solo con la vida de su esposo sino con la propia y en consecuencia la de su bebé no nacido.

Mientras tanto, Pedro y Jimmy están en su casa aunque se sienten acechados durante el día, entrada la noche ven sombras y notan el ambiente diferente, el miedo y la duda comienzan a invadirlos y antes de que puedan encontrar explicación a sus miedos llega el hijo menor de María quien les hace saber que Ruiz y su esposa están muertos y además que su madre María desapareció, el niño culpa a los hermanos por haberse llevado a Uriel y haber liberado la maldad.
El chico les pide posada ya que no quiere regresar solo a su casa, le permiten quedarse en un establo y ellos deciden irse del pueblo a la mañana siguiente, no sin antes pasar por su madre y por los hijos de Pedro quienes viven con su madre y su nueva pareja junto con su pequeña hermanastra.

Pedro llega a donde sus hijos mientras Jimmy va en búsqueda de alguien que conoce y les puede ayudar. Pedro sabe que está impregnado con la maldad por el simple hecho de haber estado en contacto con Uriel al momento de cargarlo previamente para sacarlo del pueblo, así que se quita toda la ropa mientras llama a sus hijos y pide a su exmujer darle un cambio de ropa. Su exesposa lo tacha de loco al verlo llegar alterado por la mañana y hablar de encarnados y del mal cerca.

En lo que discuten, el mal que Pedro atrajo comienza a afectar la zona, siendo el perro de la familia quien sirve como vasija de esa maldad luego de olfatear la ropa que se quitó Pedro, en un movimiento repentino ataca a la pequeña niña hermanastra de los hijos de Pedro de una forma muy salvaje… debo decir que esa escena me gustó por el impacto visual y lo inesperado de la acción ya que el perro en ningún momento mostró actitud diferente hasta el instante en que se puso salvaje.
El perro huye llevándose a la niña a rastras, los padres corren desesperados tras ellos mientras Pedro va por sus hijos, el menor Santino, que quedó afectado por ver el ataque y el mayor Yahir, quien es autista y le toma un rato convencerlo de levantarse e irse.

Poco después la niña regresa como si nada, su madre la recibe aliviada de verla y ni se cuestiona por qué no tiene ningún rasguño luego de tan brutal ataque, el padre se había ido en camioneta a perseguir al perro así que no está para reunirse con su pequeña, la niña con una sonrisa misteriosa le dice “papi vendrá y te matará así… pum” y al decir pum choca sus manos indicando un impacto, pocos segundos después el papá arrolla a ambas y por el fuerte choque los tres mueren.
Pedro sube a sus hijos a su coche y huyen del lugar para reunirse con Jimmy y su madre. Juntos emprenden un viaje para verse con la persona experta en encarnados, y durante el camino, Santino pregunta qué son los embichados, su abuela cuenta que hay reglas que no hay que romper o de lo contrario el mal entrará a su cabeza y les hará hacer cosas horribles.
Las reglas son: no usar luz eléctrica, no estar cerca de animales, no portar nada que estuviera cerca del embichado, no lastimarlos y jamás llamarlos por sus nombres, los cuales son nombres de demonios.
A medio camino, la señora recibe una llamada de Sabrina, la ex de Pedro, y éste sabe que es imposible ya que la vio morir, aun así toma el teléfono y responde, ella comienza a decirle que recuperará a sus hijos, Pedro sabe que ella es la maldad que irá por ellos.

Continúan su camino hasta llegar con Mirta, la experta que Jimmy conoce y resulta ser un antiguo amor de él. Mirta al haber lidiado antes con encarnados, se da cuenta que Yahir está poseído con solo ver sus manos y piernas contraídas de manera muy tensa, le dicen que es autista pero ella explica que los demonios tardan más tiempo en controlar la cabeza de gente así porque no les es fácil descifrar ese tipo de mentes porque su cerebro es distinto.
Sabrina llega a casa de Mirta para ir por sus hijos, pero su apariencia está muy demacrada y herida, aun así logra llevarse a Santino.

Los hermanos se separan, Jimmy va en búsqueda de Sabrina para rescatar a Santino, sin embargo cuando los encuentra es tarde ya que los ve a mitad de un camino desolado en medio de la oscuridad, Sabrina va comiendo algo y al acercarse Jimmy ve que se está comiendo a su propio hijo, muy casual tal como si estuviera cargando una palomera y disfrutando unas palomitas, otra escena inesperada e impactante por lo sutil y bien lograda sin ser exagerada ni innecesariamente larga pero aun así logra captar el detalle de la madre poseída devorando al hijo inocente.

Pedro y Mirta parten en otra dirección para buscar a Uriel y ahora si de manera correcta encargarse de él y detener la maldad. Mirta lleva consigo unos artilugios iguales a los que tenía el experto que encontraron asesinado al inicio.
Mirta explica que años atrás, a una iglesia que ella y su marido administraban llegó un embichado de Buenos Aires, ellos creyeron que era una farsa hasta que éste vomitó y vieron restos de partes humanas, el embichado se había comido a su familia. También, Mirta da a conocer el hecho de que la maldad que está rondando ahora es solo una muestra de lo que puede llegar a ser, ya que el plan de la maldad es renacer en un nuevo cuerpo tras permanecer demasiado tiempo gestando en un encarnado, en este caso Uriel, así que no tienen tiempo que perder ya que recordemos que Uriel ha estado así por al menos un año.
Mientras tanto, de regreso en la casa de Mirta donde se quedaron Yahir y su abuela, el nieto se acerca a ella y empieza a hablar de forma muy elocuente y fluida, indicando así que el demonio dentro de él ya descifró su mente y tomó total posesión de Yahir. La abuela se queda mirando a su nieto quien continúa acercándose de manera amenazante.
Por su parte Pedro y Mirta llegan a donde Pedro asegura se cayó el cuerpo de Uriel cuando lo sacaban del pueblo, cerca hay una escuela y notan que hay niños dentro a pesar de ser de noche y estar a oscuras. Mirta asegura que ellos ya no son niños sino la maldad protegiendo a Uriel.
Pedro y Mirta encuentran a Uriel después de haber sido engañados por los niños quienes intentaban mantenerlos lejos del lugar. Uriel estaba oculto bajo cuerpos de los padres y profesores de todos los niños, todos víctimas de la maldad.

Mirta se prepara para usar su artilugio y terminar con Uriel, los niños engañan a Pedro para alejarlo de Mirta y así no pueda ayudarle a acabar con Uriel, y ya que los separan, los niños acaban con Mirta antes de que siquiera pueda usar su aparato. Pedro desesperado toma una parte del artilugio y comienza a golpear a Uriel en la cabeza hasta dejarlo sin vida, pero esto ya no ayuda de nada ya que no usó dicho artefacto de la forma correcta y la maldad no pudo ser detenida.

De debajo de los cuerpos de los padres y profesores, donde Uriel estaba oculto, sale un niño lleno de sangre, parece todo un parto por la forma en que llegó al mundo, y en efecto es un nacimiento, la maldad logró su cometido de renacer a pesar de los intentos de los hermanos por frenar su liberación.
Pedro cae de rodillas derrotado ante la maldad en su nuevo cuerpo, este niño toca la frente del señor y le deja una marca de sangre, no le hace nada más, simplemente sale de la escuela seguido de los demás niños y todos caminan por el campo mientras un nuevo día comienza, no sabemos a donde se dirigen, solo se sabe que la maldad está totalmente libre, y si lo que pasó en el pueblo era solo una pequeña prueba de su poder, ahora que la maldad está encarnada seguramente surgirá un caos mucho mayor.
Pedro regresa desesperanzado a casa de Mirta para reunirse con su madre y Yahir sabiendo que aunque no de una manera favorable, todo terminó. Pedro se reúne con Jimmy quien le hace saber lo que ocurrió con Santino.

Los hermanos intentan seguir con su vida lo más normal posible a pesar de la pesadilla que vivieron, regresan junto con Yahir a su hogar. Jimmy va al establo a ver al niño que dejaron quedarse ahí antes, el hermano de Uriel. El niño revela que fue el quien asesinó al hombre que iba a encargarse de Uriel al inicio porque una voz en su cabeza le dijo que lo hiciera. Impactado, Jimmy pregunta que qué pasó con su madre María, a lo que el niño responde: “lo mismo que le pasó a tu mamá”.
Al mismo tiempo, Pedro le da un helado a Yahir para que coma mientras el señor se va a duchar, pero por más que se limpie, la marca que la maldad dejó en su frente al pasar sus dedos sigue ahí, dejándolo marcado de manera permanente. Al salir del baño, Pedro nota que Yahir se está ahogando con el helado, Pedro lo ayuda a sacar lo que tiene atorado y lo hace vomitar, en su vómito no solo se ve el helado sino que comienza a verse cabello ensangrentado y una cadena que la abuela siempre portaba con un colgante representando a su familia… Yahir poseído por la maldad devoró a su abuela… tal como María fue devorada por su hijo menor porque la maldad lo obligó a hacerlo.
Pedro sale de la casa y Jimmy del establo, ambos hermanos encontrándose en medio, ambos sabiendo que la maldad ganó y que siguen rodeados por ella a pesar de sus intentos y no hay nada que puedan hacer al respecto.

Mi opinión

Me gustó por ser diferente a todas las demás películas en donde hay personas poseídas, en donde enfrentan al mal con oraciones y mucha fe, aquí la solución es artefacto místico y de antaño que pocos saben usar y a final de cuentas de nada sirvió tenerlo, eso en mi opinión refleja la realidad, no hay una solución mágica y rápida ante los problemas, la maldad existe y no va a desaparecer de un día para otro. La maldad se esparce, no tan literal por contacto como lo manejan aquí, pero todos de una u otra manera somos manipulables hasta cierto punto por las personas que nos rodean, depende de cada uno de nosotros saber qué tanto se adentrarán en nuestras cabezas.
Es común ver películas y series en donde llega el héroe o la heroína de la historia a salvar a quien está a merced de demonios, se rodea de aliados y juntos derrotan al mal con alguna arma o habilidad especial y a pesar de ser una batalla difícil en donde enfrentan a la encarnación del mal y a sus demonios internos resultan victoriosos, y aunque el mal haya sobrevivido los héroes ya están preparados para una próxima vez y hay un aire de esperanza ante lo que sea vendrá… pero aquí no, los especialistas con la solución rápida y certera no son amenaza para el mal, no hay héroes y en realidad tampoco hay villanos, solo hay personas comunes cediendo o resistiéndose ante las voces y pensamientos que la maldad les induce y el final es amargo, no hay sensación de triunfo, no hay anhelo de esperanza, solo queda el vacío de toda una historia en donde a su conclusión los personajes principales vuelven al punto de partida derrotados y sabiendo que en vez de detener a la maldad, ellos fueron quienes contribuyeron a que se esparciera más rápido y con más alcance del que hubiera tenido si no se hubieran acercado a Uriel y si no lo hubieran movido de lugar.
Me gustó también la manera en que con pequeñas pistas hacen saber más historia de la que dejan ver, por ejemplo, en una parte de la película, un personaje dice que una de las señales de que la maldad está cerca es que no hay ruido ni de los grillos, ni algún otro animal, y poniendo atención hay partes en las que hay total silencio a pesar de que no muestran tal cual que hay algún poseído cerca, simplemente sientes el vacío que la maldad crea a su paso, y al final cuando los hermanos se encuentran en el jardín de su casa, se nota están rodeados de la maldad porque no hay ningún sonido alrededor, lo que antes era un pequeño pueblo lleno de movimiento ahora es solo un sitio cubierto por la maldad.
Además, la película es perturbadora por lo gráfica que es, y como mencioné antes, no cae en la exageración de escenas sangrientas, y tampoco se apoya en los “jump scares” a los que muchas películas del estilo recurren, los cuales de tanto que han sido usados en diferentes películas ya perdieron el encanto.
Es de esas películas que cuando la vuelves a ver, encuentras muchos más detalles que te perdiste la primera vez, sé que cuando la vuelva a ver notaré muchas más cosas que complementarán aún más las historias que cuentan con sus sutiles pistas, esas historias sobre los pasados de cada personaje las cuales hacen saber que aun antes de la aparición de Uriel, ya tenían maldad dentro de su naturaleza ya que hicieron cosas que saben estaban mal, pero de las cuales no muestran arrepentimiento alguno.
El concepto de llamarles encarnados me agradó porque primero lo relacioné a la piel encarnada que se infecta, como cuando se entierra una uña y comienza a crecer la piel alrededor y es doloroso, así se me figuró que era Uriel, todo su cuerpo infectado. Y conforme avanzaba la trama e hicieron saber que así se les llamaba a los poseídos, el concepto de encarnado cambió a ahora ser las encarnaciones del mal, así que ese término aplica para quienes sean creyentes de que hay demonios entre nosotros, y para quienes quieran verlo de un lado más médico o analítico, un encarnado es tanto alguien atravesando una posesión como alguien atravesando una infección, depende mucho de la perspectiva que uno quiera tomar.
Es una película que recomiendo por no ser tan predecible y por tener una buena historia armada en diferentes niveles, con trama general y sub tramas que enriquecen toda la historia sin dejar nada inconcluso.
