The Watch

As mentioned in a previous post I have been reading a lot more Terry Pratchett and I specifically like the books about The Watch.

More specifically I like Captain Vimes, a ragged copper trying to find justice in an unjust world.

With that, I have checked what series or movies have been made about the books and unfortunately, there really aren't that many.

One of the most modern ones "The Watch" follows specifically Captain Vimes and his men but only in the spirit of them drawing on the swagger which is a Terry Pratchett story.

The series scored 5.5 on IMDB and I think that is a fair score, it took me an episode or two to really get it out of my mind that this is a semi-faithful adaptation.

Instead, it is a hodgepodge of writers' propaganda with the best parts of the books slapped in to add flavour.

That may sound particularly horrible but up until Episode 6 it is not so bad. Then comes the aftertaste.

I don't mind that they did merge so many aspects of the books into one convoluted timeline, it is fun and keeps good pace. I do mind how they took so much away from Captain Vimes.

Not only that but they made a minor character into an overpowered white knight and left the rest to seem like baffoons along for the ride.

I was looking forward to the final episode since if you know the books then there is a quirky way in which it concludes. Right through the show they kept teasing it in a way with the little dragon but they were too dead set on turning their little cherlock-einstein-mcguyver fucking wonder bitch into the hero that any semblance of soul in the plot got drained into a typical virtue signalling choke hold.

Aside from that it is a fun show and if there is a Season 2 I don't know why they can't redeem themselves.

I like the actor who is Captain Vimes and think if he gets a more capable story line he will be in his element.

It might just be that this is taking so much from the books and Terry Pratchett's humour and style can make the worst dogshit seem rather shiny but I did like the show and the hodgepodge that it was.

It is the same reason I enjoy reading historical books with a mythological and fictional twist to them, but I think the writers need to establish who the actual heroes are and not muck about with showboating under-representation.
