Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) .:. No Spoilers Series #3

First things first... I'm a huge Quentin Tarantino fan, and I watched movies like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, or Inglourious Basterds multiple times and to be honest, I can't pick which one is my favorite! By saying that I'm a big Tarantino fan, I think about some other movies too, where he wasn't a director, but a writer, like From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) or Four Rooms (1995), that I can say is one of my Top5 movies of all times... 😃

Now that we have cleared that out, I can throw stones at this movie... 😃 I have watched it before, but yesterday, I "gave it" another chance and watched it again... Just a suggestion, if you are watching a Tarantino movie, you have to re-watch it at least 1-2 times to get the whole picture, as you can (and WILL) miss a lot of things in the first take... Before watching the movie for the 2nd time, I was trying to guess the IMDB score for the movie... It has a score of 7.6 and my guess was 4-5!!! Yeah, that was too harsh...

As a big Tarantino fan, I know that he creates "different" movies... You can love it or hate it, but you can't stay neutral... But, when you have that kind of status, it is hard to create something new, something unique... I know it's hard to compare THIS movie with others, but I would try to do that and compare it with Pulp Fiction, or Four Rooms... They look confusing and not connected, and even between different scenes in the movies, but they are... All dots come into place at the end of those movies... With this one, I had a feeling like it's not finished, like it doesn't have a proper end...

Let's talk about the cast... If you mix Tarantino with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, and Al Pacino, you can't get a bad movie! Btw, the list of actors isn't over there, but I don't want to repeat the names from the Wikipedia movie page...

I have to admit that I had a bad opinion about Leonardo before as my view of him was like one of those "pretty Holywood boys" that goes through his career with his "face" and not acting skills... I suppose that I got that view after watching the famous Titanic which didn't give me positive vibes at all... But, later on, after watching his movies like Catch Me If You Can, Inception (OMG what a movie!), The Wolf of Wall Street, and Django Unchained, I changed my opinion... As he was getting older, his acting skills became better and better and he was taking some very challenging roles...

On the other side, I didn't have that "issue" with Brad Pitt... I have probably bumped up on his great movies from the start and "created" a positive image of him in my head... One of the best roles that I can remember is from the movie Snatch by Guy Ritchie (another legendary director)...

What bothers me with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is that you don't know who is the main role in the movie... Is it a story about Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), or it is about Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), or is it about Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie)... Don't worry, I didn't forget about her... She had a significant amount of "minutes" in the movie, but I can't figure it out why... I mean, she was presented as the "future Rick" as he wanted to hang out with big directors and producers, which she was doing without any issues with her charm... But in some way, I could imagine the whole movie WITHOUT her role and it would still be a good movie...

Similarly, I was trying to figure out the "point" of the movie... It shows part of Holywood's history, which is nice... How things were going, how actors getting roles (and stuntmen too 😃), and how they were living in those days, in 1969 Los Angeles... It is a kind of biography that is interesting to watch, but it could fit into the 1.5-hour movie... We didn't have to watch 2 hours and 40 minutes to get the picture... Pulp Fiction has a similar longitude, but it kept me on my sofa all the time... With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I could leave to go to the bathroom and come back, and don't miss anything... 😃

Like every other Tarantino movie, it has a bunch of trivia, goofs, connections with other movies, etc... You can find all that all around the Internet... But, one scene was "standing out of the crowd"... maybe too much than it deserves...

Let's talk about the most controversial part of the movie... The Bruce Lee scene... You can check it out on the YouTube link below... Don't worry, if you watch this one scene, it will not spoil the whole movie, as it is just one of "those scenes" where directors create a kind of "movie break"...

So, our main character in the movie Cliff, beats the shit out of Bruce Lee... As Bruce Lee is one of the movie icons, and also a martial art icon, he has a lot of fans that were found offended... Not that he was beaten by "just another stuntman", but because he was presented as an asshole in the movie...

Another person that was offended by Bruce Lee's portrayal in the film was his daughter, Shannon Lee... During that time, the movie premiere in China was halted as there was news about Shannon suing Quentin Tarantino... I suppose that it wasn't true as the movie was released afterward and Quentin rejected to cut out the scene... :)

On the contrary, listen to what he said about this specific scene in Joe Rogan's show... 😂

If you don't like to have ANY spoilers before watching the movie, do not watch the official trailer for the movie below...

Final words...

These are my views about the movie and they can be different from yours... It is still a good movie, but I wouldn't put it into the "All-time movies" category... I hope I didn't do many spoilers in this short review, or better said, my view about this movie!

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

Yeah Quentin Tarantino is great director. Once upon a time in Hollywood was awesome, got to see on one of our apps. Been awhile.
When we were dating. My man took me to see Reservoir Dogs at the theater. Even had a t-shirt. Saw Pulp Fiction on a date also. Seen more

That was quite a funny scene with Bruce Lee, whether that has any representation in reality is questionable. Perhaps something to try and drum up controversey to sell the film. I feel similar about Tarantino, he has made a few good films in the past, but mostly it has really lost its way and you cannot compare the dialog or scenes to the work of Guy Ritchie. Tarrantino seems more blood and gore just for the sake of it.. this interview is quite telling about Tarrantino as a person imo

I'm not here to defend Tarantino's character, but all these "big names" are kind-of socially awkward... And I agree with you about the trajectory of Tarantino's movies... they were better in the past...

I can imagine how great the money will be since it feature Bruce Lee
He's so good!!!
I'm a big fan!

I like the soundtrack From Dusk Till Down. Also a Tarantino fan. And Guy Ritchie, too.

The way you mentioned that the maker of this movie works hard and makes good movies and the way we have seen in the videos looks very good so I will try too I must watch this movie on Sunday and tell you how I like it.

avatar

The movie does have a few scenes of violence, but in general, it's not bad as some of Tarantino's previous films... :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

enjoyed reading your review of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I agree with you that it's a good movie, but not an all-time great. I think the main reason for this is that it's not as tightly plotted as some of Tarantino's other films. There are a lot of interesting scenes and characters, but they don't always seem to come together in a satisfying way.

I also agree that the Bruce Lee scene is controversial. I can understand why some people were offended by it, but I also think it's an interesting and thought-provoking scene. It's a reminder that even the most iconic figures are not immune to being portrayed in a negative light.

I would say that the whole controversy was created to attract more eyeballs as even a bad marketing is a marketing... :)

avatar

I wouldn't like Bruce Lee to be presented like that.

avatar

Yeah, we all had a different image of him than in the movie... 😃

avatar

I still have not seen this one, but it's on my list man, I heard good things about it at the time, but never got around to watching it. Busy boy I guess!

avatar

As you can see from the post, I wasn't too content with the movie... It's great to see a great cast, but it's missing "that" something... ;)

avatar

Hey man, I was a little afraid to read the post fully in case of any accidental spoilers, I know you said there were none, but still...

Sorry to hear that it was not great, I will still watch it some day and see what I think..

avatar

I didn't have that "WOW" feeling, but it is still a good movie... ;)
