Korean. Crime drama. A little bit of thrill. And I am immediately glued to the screen. My affection for the Korean films is, well, too deep.

And why not?

Although it's the story and artists who determine the heat of a movie, I like how Korean drama represents society, the untold stories, and the core of human psychology. They are damn good, I tell you.

An Old Lady tells you a disturbing story, a social plague that might be existing around us without our awareness. An elderly lady being raped by a younger man and he moves freely without any remorse — cause he knows nobody will believe the lady as raping an old lady is absurd, especially by a handsome young man. And it really happened. Even the police didn't want to take the case and considered it a waste of their time and effort.

While this is just a drama, a fictional story attempting to highlight the psychological trauma of the victim, this shit is real. I knew people bullying elderly people just because they had lovely voices. The lady repeatedly used to say she would be of their grandmother's age, but they continued bullying her over the phone. Although none of them know each other and each of them look like, the lady's voice is everything that matters to them. Quite pathetic, isn't it?

Anyway, how did they do in the movie? The characters?

Well, the story is well-acted by the artists. Seems to be the artists are submerged in the characters and they walk in the same shoes. The beginning, end and everything in between, they have moved in synchrony. The plot wasn't hurried, the characters were patient, and so was the climax.

But one thing that is clearly celebrated throughout the plot, is the preservation of dignity at any cost. Although the old lady used to live and work with another old man, they weren't attached emotionally. They had different lifestyles but were connected by a sense of mutual respect. Even at one point, the lady went through extreme hardship to avoid being labelled as dependent.

To some point, the story may feel disturbing to you, especially when the situation demands explaining the event that silenced the old lady. Then again, when the lady approached the rapist's fiancee to disclose what he actually is— his animalistic self that hides within. It's a dilemma whether to allow the couple to unite for the sake of the unborn baby or let the rapist pay for his crime.

To me, it was interesting and thought-provoking. But some may find it a bit slow and lengthy. You really cannot expect a Korean drama to be less than 2 hours on average— so, yeah, it’s justified. investing the time is worth it, I believe.

are you intending to pile up more of my cine list than it already is? 😣

Beware, most of my recommendations are surprisingly boring to the majority. If you want a list anyway, I have it ready. ;)
