12 Years a Slave || Review - Opinion[ Eng - Esp ]

Greetings, friends of Cinetv, when I saw this film, I thought, although slavery was abolished by law, both in the United States and around the world, today there are various forms of subjugation and super-exploitation of workers in this system. From immigrants around the world who are stripped of their documents and forced to work in the textile industry, rural laborers in sugar mills and agriculture, women who are kidnapped as victims of trafficking networks, workers who are exploited under inhumane conditions, without adequate health and safety standards, and receive poverty wages; all these forms of oppression can be considered examples of 21st-century slavery. And they are examples of a dehumanizing system governed by capitalist profit.

Saludos amigos de Cinetv cuando vi esta película pensé, si bien la esclavitud fue abolida por ley, tanto en Estados Unidos como en el mundo, hoy existen variadas formas de someter y súper explotar a los trabajadores en este sistema. Desde los inmigrantes en todo el globo que son despojados de sus documentos y forzados a trabajar en la industria textil, los peones rurales en las azucareras y el agro, las mujeres que son secuestradas víctimas de las redes de trata, los trabajadores que son explotados bajo condiciones inhumanas, sin dignas condiciones de salud y seguridad, y reciben sueldos de miseria; todos estos modos de opresión pueden ser considerados ejemplos de la esclavitud del siglo XXI. Y son muestras de un sistema deshumanizante que se rige por la ganancia capitalista.

The slave system was characterized by its profound dehumanization: it viewed black people as chattel, commodities exchangeable in the market. Slaves were not only forced to perform forced labor on the plantations and in the homes of their white masters, but were also subjected to the most extreme forms of abuse. Black women performed their (forced) labor outside the home, unlike white women. Although they performed domestic work as maids, their work primarily took place outside the private domestic sphere. Slaves, due to their status as women, were also victims of sexual coercion by their masters, who, in addition to sexually abusing them, inflicted violence through punishment and other forms of abuse. They were conceived as chattel; they also represented the possibility of continuing to reproduce slave labor. Therefore, they began to be used as an instrument of reproduction (childbearing), without any rights to their children. They were forced to give birth as many times as possible and still continue working in the fields.

El sistema esclavista se caracterizó por su profunda deshumanización: el mismo concebía a las personas negras como bienes muebles, mercancías intercambiables en el mercado. Los esclavos no solo eran obligados a desarrollar trabajos forzosos en las plantaciones y hogares de sus amos blancos, sino que además eran sometidos a las peores vejaciones. La mujer negra desarrollaba su trabajo (forzoso) por fuera del hogar, a diferencia de la mujer blanca. Si bien realizaba trabajo doméstico como criada, su trabajo se daba fundamentalmente por fuera del ámbito doméstico-privado. Las esclavas, debido a su condición de mujer, también eran víctimas de coerción sexual por parte de sus amos, quienes, además de abusar sexualmente de ellas, impartían la violencia mediante castigos y otras formas de maltrato. Eran concebidas como bienes muebles; también representaban la posibilidad de continuar reproduciendo la mano de obra esclava. Por lo que comenzaron a ser utilizadas como un instrumento de reproducción (paridoras), sin ningún tipo de derechos sobre sus hijos. Se las obligaba a parir tantas veces como fuera posible y aun así continuar trabajando en los campos.

12 YEARS A SLAVE, a film based on the autobiographical work by Solomon Northup, tells the story of a free-born black man who, after being kidnapped through deception, is sold into slavery. The 2013 film, adapted for the cinema by John Ridley and directed by Steve McQueen (both African-American), is a historical testimony rarely brought to the big screen. Without mincing words, it brings to the table the terrible situation of slavery to which African descendants were subjected in the early and mid-19th century. It was highly acclaimed by both critics and audiences (although it was controversial among the more conservative white sectors due to its crudeness), for its exceptional artistic and directorial work, its dramatic content, the sensitivity and seriousness when addressing the subject and the performances of the entire cast. Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong'o, who plays Patsey, one of the slaves most abused by her master, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Solomon) was nominated for Best Actor. 12 AÑOS DE ESCLAVITUD, película basada en la obra autobiográfica de Solomon Northup narra la historia de un hombre negro nacido libre que, tras ser secuestrado mediante engaños, es vendido como un esclavo en la película de 2013 adaptada al cine por John Ridley y dirigida por Steve McQueen (ambos afroamericanos) es un testimonio histórico como pocas veces se llevó a la gran pantalla. Sin pelos en la lengua, pone sobre la mesa la terrible situación de esclavitud a la que eran sometidos los afrodescendientes a principios y mediados del s. XIX. Fue altamente aclamada, tanto por la crítica como por la audiencia (aunque fue controvertida entre los sectores blancos más conservadores por su crudeza), por su excepcional trabajo artístico y de dirección, el contenido dramático, la sensibilidad y seriedad a la hora de tocar el tema y las actuaciones de todo el elenco. La actriz keniata-mexicana Lupita Nyong’o, quien interpreta a Patsey, una de las esclavas más vejadas por su amo, fue galardonada con el premio Óscar a mejor actriz de reparto, y Chiwetel Ejiofor (Solomon) fue nominado a mejor actor.
