Anatomy of a fall (2023) review: The french judicial system goes hard.

Although I know that these days I have been a little more intermittent than normal, I tell you that I have dedicated a considerable portion of my time to catching up with several movies that I have been pending for a long time.

As you well know, the Oscar nominations were recently announced, and, although I don't usually feel obligated to see all the nominated films, I generally try to give at least a chance to those that received the best picture nomination.

The list was more or less predictable: Gems like Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon or The Holdovers versus other more divisive films like Barbie or Maestro, all deserving in certain terms of said nomination.

However, this time I would like to focus on Anatomy of a Fall, a foreign film that, despite not generating as much conversation as all the previously mentioned examples, certainly deserves to be part of the list of brilliant releases from last year.

The reason? The French film directed by Justine Tret (who also received a well-deserved nomination for best director) immerses us in a fascinating story where the French judicial system will serve as a framework to explore the chaotic relationship of a couple of writers after the husband died in “mysterious” conditions.

Presented with great agility, Anatomy of a Fall represents an undeniable display of talent, starting with The Excellency Sandra Hüller in the lead role.

Sandra Voyter (as her character is called) is a brilliant woman who seems to be slightly frustrated with her marriage, the result of an accident in which her son Daniel (played by Machado-Graner) permanently lost her vision.

Sandra blames her husband for this tragedy, and this resentment seems to have deeply affected the course of their marriage, all of this along with a series of inconsistent evidence will call into question whether or not Voyter had anything to do with her husband's death.

The brilliant thing about Anatomy of a Fall is that although it focuses a good portion of its footage on trying to clarify the facts for the audience, we could not say that its objective is to try to show us whether Sandra is guilty or not, depriving the viewer of of absolute certainty.

Instead, the film prefers to make us consume all the evidence and facts on the table, creating an immersive experience where we are basically another member of the jury, trying to make sense of an unexplained tragedy.

Anatomy of a Fall is an excellent film that, despite its superficial simplicity, contains a lot of density in its core, full of wonderful performances and capable of turning two hours of dialogue into an exciting and devastating experience.

Como ustedes bien saben recientemente se anunciaron las nominaciones a los premios Oscar, y, si bien no suelo sentirme obligado a ver todas los filmes nominados, generalmente procuro darle una oportunidad al menos a las que recibieron la nominación de best picture.

La lista era más o menos predecible: Joyas como Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon o The Holdovers frente a otras películas más divisivas como Barbie o Maestro, todas merecedoras en ciertos términos de dicha nominación.

No obstante, en esta ocasión me gustaría enfocarme en Anatomy of a fall, una película extranjera que a pesar de no generar una conversación tan grande como todos los ejemplos previamente mencionados, sin duda merece formar parte de la lista de lanzamientos brillantes del año pasado.

¿La razón? El filme francés dirigido por Justine Tret (Quien también se llevó una nominación muy merecida a mejor director) nos sumerge en una historia fascinante en donde el sistema judicial francés servirá como marco para explorar la caótica relación de una pareja de escritores luego de que el esposo muriera en condiciones “misteriosas”.

Presentada con muchísima agilidad, Anatomy of a Fall supone un despliegue innegable de talento, partiendo por La excelentísima Sandra Hüller en el rol protagonista.

Sandra Voyter (como se llama su personaje) es una mujer brillante que parece estar ligeramente frustrada con su matrimonio, producto de un accidente en donde su hijo Daniel (interpretado por Machado-Graner) perdió la visión permanentemente.

Sandra culpa a su esposo por esta tragedia, y este resentimiento parece haber afectado profundamente el curso de su matrimonio, todo esto junto a una serie de pruebas inconsistentes pondrán en duda si Voyter tuvo que ver o no en la muerte de su marido.

Lo brillante de Anatomy of a fall es que a pesar de que centra una buena porción de su metraje a tratar de aclarecerle los hechos a la audiencia, no podríamos decir que su objetivo es tratar de mostrarnos si Sandra es culpable o no, despojando al espectador de la certeza absoluta.

En cambio, el filme prefiere hacernos consumir todas las pruebas y hechos sobre la mesa, creando una experiencia inmersiva en donde básicamente somos otro miembro más del jurado, tratando de encontrarle sentido a una tragedia sin explicación.

Anatomy of a fall es una película excelente que pese a su simpleza superficial contiene mucha densidad en sus entrañas, plagada de performances estupendos y capaz de convertir dos horas de diálogo en una experiencia emocionante y devastadora.
