Marvel's "What if..." Is still awful

How the "What If" project has the fortune and the curse at the same time of having some of the most interesting premises within the entire MCU: showing us alternative versions of the events that occurred in it, exploiting the narrative capacity of its characters, places and events when they are taken out of their comfort zone.

With a first season that premiered at the height of Disney Plus more than two years ago (Characterized by being irregular but presenting a couple of quite interesting episodes) the hype for the second season of the Marvel animated anthology only grew, Considering that not only could its creators use the experience acquired in the first part to correct their shortcomings, but also because today a paradigm shift is more than necessary within this cinematographic universe, what better starting point for this than a What if?

However, I regret to tell you that although its original virtues are preserved (We appreciate the animation style, the direction and the intermittent presence of several of the live action stars lending their voices), we are facing a monotonous repetition in what Ironically, it had to be one of the most experimental projects in all of Marvel, and there is no better example of this than the Christmas special "What if... Happy Hogan Saves Christmas?".

Vaguely inspired by Die Hard (Something that the episode makes clear on several occasions, by the way), we see how in the middle of a Christmas party at Stark Tower, Justin Hammer (The villain of Iron Man 2) decides to infiltrate to steal a serum prepared with Bruce Banner's blood, which apparently has the potential to turn him into an enhanced version of the Incredible Hulk.

Although this premise is far from being the most original story in the world, I appreciate that it is an interesting opportunity to make us visit several familiar faces again, not only Happy Hogan himself (who obviously stars in the chapter), but Hammer, María Hill and others main and secondary characters of the MCU that I prefer not to mention at this time.

However, it is difficult to ignore that in terms of narrative possibilities a premise of this type does nothing more than scratch the surface of What If as a concept, demonstrating that its biggest mistake since conception has ironically been the foolish efforts to reference the series and films. of live action.

Having rights to a countless number of stories and characters, it is painful that in the end they end up resorting to fanservice of the company's most mainstream content, and in most cases they are not even able to replicate the mediocre level of quality of these works.

Each character is reminiscent of their human counterpart in terms of physique, but when it comes to speaking and acting they usually leave a lot to be desired, becoming an empty shell that lacks complexity and is only there to please less demanding palates.

For me, after this episode there is no reason to give others a chance, a shame.

Con una primera temporada que se estrenó en pleno apogeo de Disney Plus hace más de dos años (Caracterizada por ser irregular pero presentar un par de episodios bastante interesantes) el hype por la segunda temporada de la antología animada de Marvel no hacía más que crecer, considerando que no solo sus creadores podían utilizar la experiencia adquirida en la primera parte para corregir sus falencias, sino porque aparte hoy en día es más que necesario un cambio de paradigma dentro de este universo cinematográfico, ¿Que mejor punto de partida para esto que un What if?

No obstante, lamento decirles que a pesar de que sus virtudes originales se conservan (Apreciamos el estilo de animación, la dirección y la presencia intermitente de varias de las estrellas del live action prestando sus voces), estamos frente a una repetición monótona en lo que irónicamente debía ser uno de los proyectos más experimentales de todo Marvel, y no existe mejo ejemplo de esto que el especial de navidad "What if... Happy Hogan Saves Christmas?".

Aunque está premisa dista de ser la historia más original del mundo, aprecio que sea una oportunidad interesante para hacernos visitar de nuevo a varias caras conocidas, no solo el mismo Happy Hogan (Quien obviamente protagoniza el capítulo), sino Hammer, María Hill y otros personajes principales y secundarios del MCU que prefiero no mencionar en estos momentos.

No obstante, es difícil ignorar que en términos de posibilidades narrativas una premisa de este tipo no hace más que rasgar la superficie del What if como concepto, demostrando que su mayor error desde la concepción ha Sido irónicamente los necios esfuerzos por referencias las series y películas del live action.

Cada personaje resulta reminscente a su contraparte humana en términos de físico, pero a la hora de hablar y actuar suele dejar mucho que desear, viéndose convertido en un caparazón vacío que carece de complejidad y solo está ahí para complacer a los paladares menos exigentes.

Para mí, luego de este episodio no existe razón alguna para darle una oportunidad a los demás, una pena.
