Parasite (2019) review: the greatest movie of the XXI century.

Bong Joon-Ho's "Parasite" is one of the most important films of the 21st century, a merit it achieved not only by being the first foreign film to receive an Oscar for best film in 2020, but because it is an unusual mix of social criticism. with an agile and beautifully constructed drama.

I had the opportunity to rewatch this film recently and was surprised by how well put together it is. Although it sounds strange to praise this aspect of a work above everything else, it is commendable that a drama can convey such a complicated point so efficiently.

For those who have not seen it (which by the way, I recommend that you see it without knowing anything about it), Parasite is the story of a low-class Korean family that ends up infiltrating the life of another wealthy family, posing as a teacher of English, an art teacher, a housewife and a driver with years of experience.

The main attraction, then, is not only to see how they progressively gain the trust of the wealthy family (which means removing previous employees from the game), but also to suffer those moments of constant tension as everyone tries to hide their "poor" background. "and the fact that they are part of the same family unit.

Although this premise is already enough to give us an "entertaining" experience, Bong Joon-Ho goes a step further and uses every aspect of the film (both aesthetic and substantial) to highlight the contrasts that exist between both social classes.

Starting from obvious things like the spaciousness and physical appearance of the environments where they live, to other slightly more "subtle" elements like the way they express themselves or celebrate happy moments, Parasite takes a neutral position that recognizes the shortcomings of its protagonists, but at the same time he recognizes that his morally questionable decisions have a logical reason for being.

It's not as simple as saying "the poor are the good and the rich are the bad" or, "poverty is a choice," Parasite is a slightly more complicated portrait of reality, sometimes accepting it as something circumstantial and random, but sometimes it seeks to give merit to those who achieved success through effort and dedication.

Characterized by the constant use of dialogue and few moments of action (At least in traditional terms), we are faced with a film that does not feel like anything I have seen before, funny, heartbreaking, and with an ending that constantly teeters between the murky and the hopeless.

"Parasite" de Bong Joon-Ho es una de las películas más importantes del siglo XXI, un mérito que consiguió no solo al ser el primer film extranjero que recibió un Oscar a mejor película en 2020, sino porque es una mezcla inusual de crítica social con un drama ágil y hermosamente construido.

Tuve la oportunidad de volver a ver esta película hace poco y me sorprendió lo bien organizada que está, aunque suena extraño alabar este aspecto de una obra por encima de todo lo demás, es loable que un drama pueda transmitir con tanta eficiencia un punto tan complicado.

Para aquellos que no la hayan visto (Que por cierto, recomiendo que la vean sin saber nada al respecto), Parasite es la historia de una familia coreana de clasa baja que termina infiltrandose en la vida de otra familia pudiente, haciéndose pasar por un profesor de inglés, una profesora de arte, una ama de casa y un chófer con años de experiencia.

El principal atractivo entonces, es no solo ver cómo progresivamente van ganandose la confianza de la familia pudiente (Lo cuál implica sacar del juego a los empleados previos), sino también sufrir aquellos momentos de tensión constante a medida que todos intentan ocultar su trasfondo "pobre" y el hecho de que forman parte de un mismo núcleo familiar.

Aunque está premisa ya resulta suficiente para brindarnos una experiencia "entretenida", Bong Joon-Ho va un paso más allá y utiliza cada aspecto de la película (tanto estético como sustancial) para resaltar los contrastes que existen entre ambas clases sociales.

Partiendo desde obviedades como la amplitud y el aspecto físico de los ambientes en dónde viven, hasta otros elementos un poco más "sutiles" como la forma de expresarse o celebrar los momentos felices, Parasite toma una posición neutral que reconoce las falencias de sus protagonistas, pero al mismo tiempo reconoce que sus decisiones moralmente cuestionables tienen una razón de ser lógica.

No es tan simple como decir "los pobres son los buenos y los ricos son los malos" o, "la pobreza es una elección", Parasite es un retrato un poco más complicado de la realidad, que a veces la acepta como algo circunstancial y aleatorio, pero a veces busca darle méritos a aquellos que consiguieron el éxito a punta de esfuerzo y dedicación.

Caracterizada por el uso constante de diálogos y escasos momentos de acción (Al menos en términos tradicionales), estamos ante una película que no se siente como nada que haya visto antes, divertida, desgarradora, y con un final que se tambalea constantemente entre lo turbio y lo desesperanzador.
