Poor Things (2023) review: The honest barbie.

Continuing with the titanic task of seeing all the works nominated for the Oscar for best film, "Poor things" by Yorgos Lanthimos was the most recent film that I gave a chance.

And despite the fact that it is much less easy to digest than its competition (Especially if we compare it with something like The Holdovers or Oppenheimer herself) it is undeniable that we are facing a brilliant film, which takes an intrinsically irreverent premise and uses it as a engine to quickly develop very complex topics such as sexuality, power, self-discovery and female empowerment.

In this way, Poor Things focuses on the character of Bella Baxter (Played by Emma Stone), a girl who was resurrected after a tragic accident and who does not seem to remember anything about her "past life."

Although Bella starts out having the mental age of a newborn, it is evident that she is maturing at an excessive speed, which is why her desire to know the real world grows every time.

Although selling Poor Things as a deconstruction of the old story of the Frankenstein monster may sound too simplistic, it is impossible not to find a large number of substantial connections between both stories, something that also seems to be enhanced by the aesthetics of several very specific moments in the film. .

However, the true value of the story lies in Bella's exploration process, which, through Emma Stone's brilliant performance, perfectly portrays the evolution of a character who is having her first contact with everything that makes her our life be our life: Food, music, sex, violence, etc...

It should be noted that Poor Things is a story that exists in a world that simultaneously mimics ours, but at the same time is tainted by multiple surrealist elements, not only in its scientific rules, but in the retrofuturist aesthetics that make it difficult to place the events at some specific time.

All of this starts out quite disconcerting, but little by little it immerses us in its universe.

Does this mean that Poor Things is a perfect movie? Of course not, I personally found her passing a bit uneven and there were very specific aspects of Bella's mindset that I would have preferred to be addressed slightly differently.

Apart from this, it is a solid and brave film that deserves all the praise it has received, both in its brilliant performances, its script, cinematography, etc.

Continuando con la titánica tarea de ver todas las obras nominadas al Oscar como mejor película, "Poor things" de Yorgos Lanthimos fue el filme más reciente al que le di una oportunidad.

Y es que a pesar de que resulta mucho menos fácil de digerir que su competencia (Especialmente si la comparamos con algo como The Holdovers o la mismísima Oppenheimer) es innegable que estamos ante una película brillante, que toma una premisa intrínsecamente irreverente y la utiliza como motor para desarrollar con agilidad temas muy complejos como la sexualidad, el poder, el autodescubrimiento y el empoderamiento femenino.

De esta forma Poor things se centra el personaje de Bella Baxter (Interpretada por Emma Stone), una chica que fue resucitada tras un trágico accidente y que parece no recordar nada de "su vida pasada".

Aunque Bella comienza teniendo la edad mental de un recién nacido es evidente que va madurando a una velocidad desmedida, por esto mismo cada vez crecen sus ansias de conocer el mundo real.

Aunque vender Poor Things como una deconstrucción a la antigua historia del monstruo de Frankestein pueda sonar demasiado simplista, es imposible no encontrar una gran cantidad de conexiones sustanciales entre ambas historias, algo que aparte parece verse repotenciado por la estética de varios momentos muy concretos del film.

No obstante, el verdadero valor de la historia radica en el proceso de exploración de Bella, que, por medio del brillante performance de Emma Stone, retrata a la perfección la evolución de un personaje que esta teniendo sus primer contacto con todo aquello que hace que nuestra vida sea nuestra vida: La comida, la música, el sexo, la violencia, etc...

Cabe destacar que Poor Things es una historia que existe en un mundo que simultáneamente mimica el nuestro, pero que a la vez se encuentra empañado de multiples elementos surrealistas, no solo en las reglas científicas del mismo, sino en la estética retrofuturista que hace díficil situar los eventos en alguna época específica.

Todo esto comienza siendo bastante desconcertante, pero poco a poco nos sumerge en su universo.

¿Esto quiere decir que Poor Things es una película perfecta? Por supuesto que no, personalmente encontré su passing un poco irregular y había aspectos muy específicos del mindset de Bella que hubiese preferido fuesen abordados de forma ligeramente diferente.

Aparte de esto, es un filme sólido y valiente que se merece todas las alabanzas recogidas, tanto en las brillantes interpretaciones, su guion, cinematografía, etc.
