The night before (2015) review: A Christmas tradition about a Christmas tradition.

"The Night Before" perfectly represents what many adult Christmas movies want to achieve, but few actually dk, and although I admit that it does not represent the type of films that I enjoy at this time of the year, I appreciate that it has much more density than what it seems at first sight.

And underneath all the obscene jokes obsessed with sex, drugs and hedonism in general there is a solid exploration of everything that friendship represents over the years, especially when life follows its natural course and we grow in separate paths from those of our friends.

This idea would not land so effectively if it were not for the brilliant performances of Josep Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie, who sell us very well the idea that the relationship between them makes sense despite their dissonant personalities.

Since Ethan's parents (Gordon Levitt) passed away a couple of years ago, his friends Isaac and Chris (Rogen and Mackie) have made it an annual tradition to share a night of debauchery on Christmas Eve.

The thing is that Isaac is about to have a baby and Chris is too busy being a professional athlete, for this same reason they decide that it is time to leave tradition behind and this year will be the last time they do it, that's why they want to make the most of their night.

Of course, this will take them on a journey of self-discovery where they will question the value of their friendship and all the decisions they have made to be the people they are today.

Although this is an extremely generic premise this does not mean that "the night before" is not capable of giving us a quite entertaining and refreshing experience, something that is not only driven by the brilliant protagonist trio, but also by the great number of guest stars that sweeten the final result.

The vulgar nature of the film (which sometimes gets out of hand) ends up being what differentiates it from other similar stories, especially when it is used to reinforce chaotic elements that border on surrealism.

It's not even close to my favorite Christmas movie, but it's a nice addition to the annual rotation of anyone who enjoys raunchy humor.

"the night before" representa a la perfección lo que muchísimas películas navideñas para adultos quieren alcanzan, pero pocos realmente logran, y aunque admito que no representa el tipo de filmes que disfruto en esta época, aprecio que cuente con mucha más densidad de lo que podría parecer al principio.

Y es que debajo de todos los chistes obscenos obsesionados con el sexo, las drogas y el hedonismo en general existe una sólida exploración a todo lo que representa la amistad con el pasar de los años, especialmente cuando la vida sigue su curso natural y crecemos en caminos separados a los de nuestros amigos.

Está idea no aterrizaría con tanta efectividad sino fuese por las brillantes actuaciones de Josep Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogen y Anthony Mackie, quienes nos venden muy bien la idea de que la relación que hay entre ellos tiene sentido a pesar de sus personalidades disonantes.

Desde que los padres de Ethan (Gordon Levitt) fallecieron hace un par de años, sus amigos Isaac y Chris (Rogen y Mackie) establecieron como tradición anual compartir una noche de descontrol en Christmas eve.

La cuestión es que Isaac está apunto de tener un bebé y Chris se encuentra demasiado ocupado al ser un atleta profesional, por esta misma razón deciden que ya es tiempo de dejar la tradición atrás y este año será la última vez que lo hagan, por esto mismo quieren aprovechar el tiempo al máximo.

Por supuesto, esto los va a llevar a un viaje de autodescubrimiento en dónde cuestionarán el valor de su amistad y todas las decisiones que han tomado para ser las personas que son en la actualidad.

Por su puesto está es una premisa extremadamente generica, pero esto no quiere decir que "the night before" no sea capaz de entregarnos una experiencia bastante entretenida y refrescante, algo que no solo se impulsa por el brillante trío protagonista, sino también por la gran cantidad de estrellas invitadas que endulzan el resultado final.

La naturaleza vulgar del filme (Que a veces se le va de las manos) termina haciendo aquello que lo diferencia de otras historias similares, especialmente cuando se usa para reforzar elementos caóticos que rozan el surrealismo.

Ni de lejos es mi película navideña favorita, pero es una buena adición a la rotación anual de cualquier persona que disfrute el raunchy humor.
