The Silence of the Lambs (1991) review: a good film to watch while you eat.

I think there is no more difficult film to review than the one that does everything right in objective terms, the one whose performances, script, direction, photography, special effects, etc... come together to provide a harmonious experience where nothing is superfluous and nothing is missing.

Although a couple of years ago I had had the opportunity to see Hannibal (the brilliant NBC series that was tragically cancelled, not to be confused with the more divisive film of the same name), I had never given the adaptation of the iconic character a chance. Created by Thomas Harris Most Popular: The Silence of the Lambs.

The reason? I will not say that I had better things pending, and after having seen it it is quite clear that I was committing a sin by ignoring it, however, I admit that for many years the knowledge that it was a "classic" was enough to quench my thirst for cinema and I preferred to dedicate my time to other films.

The time finally came.

Talking about Hannibal Lecter is as redundant as talking about Bugs Bunny (Although one is slightly more Machiavellian than the other, I won't say which), the real surprise of Silence of The Lamb is that although Anthony Hopkins steals the camera at all times who appears representing Dr. Lecter, he is far from being the true protagonist of the film, at least not in traditional terms.

Doing some research on the irregular series of films surrounding Hannibal Lecter (and the books they took as a reference) one of the things that caught my attention was the use of Silence of the Lambs and not The Red Dragon as a work to be adapted, considering that the latter was the "first part of the story" and starting with Lambs would mean that various elements would be shown in medias res.

Obviously, after completing the film, this doubt was dispelled, and I understood that Silence of the Lambs was the definitive representation of a group of solid characters, with a past and a future that is often better to assume and not know, an idea perhaps. a little extraterrestrial in a world where current cinema is obsessed with origins, explanations, continuity and consistency.

Clarice Starling is a young student at an FBI academy, sent by her boss as a kind of bait to talk to Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychologist who is locked up in the maximum security wing of a psychiatric hospital for having committed acts of cannibalism against several of his former patients.

Purpose? Crawford hopes Clarice Starling will catch Lecter's eye, harnessing her vast intellect to build a psychological profile to help catch a new serial killer on the loose: Buffalo Bill.

The point is that despite the inherently violent nature of this premise, most of the moments of tension in The Silence of the lambs are built around extensive and complex dialogues, where the only thing that is at risk is the psyche. exposed of a brilliant young woman played by an excellent Jodie Foster.

It's not hard to understand why she gained cult status from her, Silence of the Lambs is a display of talent all around.

Creo que no existe una película más difícil de reseñar que aquella que hace todo correcto en términos objetivos, aquella cuyas actuaciones, guión, dirección, fotografía, efectos especiales, etc... Confluyen para brindar una experiencia armoniosa en dónde nada sobra y nada falta.

Si bien hace un par de años había tenido la oportunidad de ver Hannibal (La brillante serie de la NBC que fue trágicamente cancelada, no confundir con la más divisiva película del mismo nombre), nunca le había dado un chance a la adaptación del icónico personaje creado por Thomas Harris más popular: The Silence of the Lambs.

¿La razón? No diré que tenía mejores cosas pendientes, y luego de haberla visto es bastante claro que estaba cometiendo un pecado al ignorarla, no obstante, admito que durante muchos años el conocimiento de que se trataba de un "clásico" bastaba para saciar mi sed cinéfila y prefería dedicarle mi tiempo a otras películas.

Finalmente llegó la hora.

Hablar de Hannibal Lecter es tan redundante como hablar de Bugs Bunny (Aunque uno sea ligeramente más maquiavélico que el otro, no diré cuál), la verdadera sorpresa de Silence of The Lamb radica en que si bien Anthony Hopkins se roba la cámara en cada momento que aparece representando el doctor Lecter, el dista de ser el verdadero protagonista del filme, al menos no en términos tradicionales.

Investigando un poco sobre la irregular serie de películas que rodea a Hannibal Lecter (Y los libros que tomaron como referencia) una de las cosas que llamaron mi atención fue el uso de Silence of the Lambs y no The Red Dragon como obra a adaptar, considerando que esta última era la "primera parte de la historia" y comenzar con Lambs supondría que varios elementos se mostrarian in media res.

Obviamente, luego de haber completado la película está duda se disipó, y comprendí que Silence of the Lambs era la representación definitiva de un conjunto de personajes sólidos, con un pasado y un futuro que muchas veces es mejor suponer y no saber, una idea quizá un poco extraterrestre en un mundo en dónde el cine actual se encuentra obsesionado con los orígenes, las explicaciones, la continuidad y la consistencia.

Clarice Starling es una joven estudiante en una academia del FBI, enviada por su jefe como una suerte de carnada a hablar con el doctor Hannibal Lecter, un psicólogo brillante que se encuentra encerrado en el ala de máxima seguridad de un hospital psiquiátrico por haber cometido actos de canibalismo contra varios de sus antiguos pacientes.

¿La finalidad? Crawford espera que Clarice Starling llame la atención de Lecter, aprovechando su gran intelecto para construir un perfil psicológico que ayude a atrapar a un nuevo asesino serial que anda suelto: Buffalo Bill.

La cuestión es que a pesar de la naturaleza tan intrínsecamente violenta de esta premisa, la mayoría de los momentos de tensión en The Silence of the lambs se construyen alrededor de diálogos extensos y complejos, en dónde lo único que se encuentra en riesgo es la psique expuesta de una joven brillante interpretada por una excelente Jodie Foster.

No es difícil comprender por qué ganó su estatus de culto, Silence of the Lambs es un despliegue de talento por todos lados.
