Gosh, Hollywood and the internet algorithms killed the avant garde. I do miss art house films that went to the edge of things - cinema as art. I think anyone doing edgy cinema now has to come to terms with the fact it won't make money or maybe not even be seen, and make it because it's important to them artistically.
The other day I watched The Zone Of Interest, which I didn't think I wanted to watch, given the subject matter. As horrifying as it was, I loved how the story was told. There's some wonderful scenes that cleverly tell of the brutality without mentioning it at all.
As for sexy movies, I have probably grown out of them. The one I really loved at your age - gah, sorry - was The Pillow Book, a Peter Greenway film. I had quite the fetish for being painted for a long time, which was fulfilled, and is another story to be told another time and perhaps not here.
Wow that's a nice recommendation - I kept meaning to see it when it was in the press, but was ultimately put off by the grim subject matter. Now I think I might check it out after all! :)
Ha! I'm not big on sexy movies either. This one just turned out to be sexier than expected, I guess. I like films that don't set out to be sexy really, where there's a bit of awkward noise or fumbling or I don't know, things that suggest real life. Is real life sexy? I dunno. Perhaps. The Pillow Book looks neat! I'm adding it to my list, also (gotta keep balance with the WWII movies, eh).

Oh me too. Even the first ten minutes was hard but then I saw it was a film with something to say, ultimately, I think, how easy it is to turn a blind eye when we profit from the suffering of others. Let me know what you think.
