Parasite (2019)

A story of the have and the have-nots and what some people will do to get ahead. Bong Joon-ho's parasite is a social commentary that may not have the slant that you think it does. The Kim family is very, very poor and their son gets the opportunity to work as a tutor for the extremely wealthy Park family. After that, the families are tangled together in some unexpected ways.

This is one of those festival darlings that has was getting a ton of publicity as the must-not-miss movie of 2019. It's from the director who brought us The Host and Snowpiercer, both of which are great films, by the way.

I love how Bong Joon-ho discusses class and wealth and even contentedness in this film. He brings up issues of entitlement and status and the way that those divide people. The performances in Parasite are great. They're sometimes awkward, but they're exactly what they're supposed to be.

I just loved watching all of the interactions, whether it was with the wealthy Park family or the poor Kim family or even them interacting together in brief little moments here and there. You just you really felt a sense of genuineness to what they were doing.

The film does a good job of building up the world and leading us in the story that just begins to slowly and slowly build this sense of dread or unease. And you don't really know why exactly, but you do know that something not quite good could happen in the very near future. The tension actually rises to a palpable level in the last third of the movie.

It leads to a climax that I really think can cause some discussions on what is the right thing to do and what motivates us. The pace in this movie, it's steady. It's kind of patient, but it just maintains a slowly building pace as the tension increases.

And as the tension increases, the pace of the film also begins to ramp up. So that was nice that it it wasn't just a slow burn or boring or whatever you want to say all the way through. But it also wasn't really fast paced either. It just went the way it did. And as everything kept growing and growing, it got faster and faster. And you just your heart started to beat more and more. The tension built the anxiety even was there. But I did feel the time in this.

I cannot think of a single thing that I would cut out or even any areas that I would trim down or try to speed up. But that being said, I was aware of the time passing. There are several funny moments in this film that go along well with the tension, but it's more of the comedy or the humorous parts happen up front of the movie.

And then the tension happens at the end. So you don't have it just like interspersing or breaking that up. So you don't really get a reprieve from the tension once it begins. Once that just starts, it keeps going.

Now, because of the richness of the message in the film, I do think that this requires and merits several viewings. But that being said, also, this is not something that I would just sit down and watch regularly or even often.

I'll watch it probably once or twice more. But it's again, it's not something that I would be like, "oh, yeah, I'm totally in the mood for this. Let's go!" But it is definitely worth watching once, twice, maybe even three times, especially because I do believe that there is some layered messaging going on.

And it's really the social commentary, is so deep and it is talking about the class and the structure of who we are as people and what makes us content. And are we able to be satisfied with what we have or do we constantly have to chase something else? And then if somebody else has something that we don't, does that make them wrong? It doesn't make us wrong.

Bong Joon-ho is asking that question of, you know what? If there is a divide in class, is that necessarily a bad thing? Because if I'm up here, I can be contented and I decided to work extra hard or I decided to go after all those promotions or make the sacrifices that it takes to get to that point. Or it can be down here and I can be totally contented with my level of salary, my level of life, and I'm making it. I'm just not rich.

And that's OK, too. And it doesn't mean that these have to one has to be pushed up and one has to be pushed down, that we can live like this and we can be OK as well. And that may be controversial for some people to even think about. I don't know. But I do like that he asks the question about it, that he even brings it up, that we begin to talk about it some and that it's done in a way that leads to a climax that you're probably not totally expecting. I rate Parasite 9 out of 10.

Great movie that stuck with me and where I wouldn't mind a rewatch.
This one really put Bong Joon-ho on the map. Still some movies from him that are on my watchlist.
