🎬 2025 Movie #20 | Anora (2024)

Anora (6.6/10)
This movie is 2 hours and 20 minutes long while it easily could have been done in 90 - 100 minutes. It's directed by Sean Baker who I know from The Florida Project which was a film I really enjoyed at the time of watching but didn't really stick years later even though I do remember mainly the visual setting and location along with the main theme of poverty close by Disneyland. Anora kind of explores the same themes with the difference in class of a sex worker who does her job to get by and a son of a russian oliarch who is on the opposite side. That is also the main theme what the movie is actually about.
All-Explaining Movie Plot:
"A young escort from Brooklyn meets and impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened as his parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled."
One of my main conserns with this movie was the plot as I feared that the breakdown of a stripper getting hired by a rich kid for them to get married followed by the family not being happy with it and trying to get the marriage reversed was it. I kind of hoped there would have been more to it but there wasn't aside from the main theme in the film that was explored and kind of came togheter in the end scene. It pretty much is a movie where in the first part you just see a lot of partying and sex where everything is great and fun and it the 2nd part a lot of cursing and some violence for it to end with some minor drama. This main story plotline was just very underwhelming for me as the 1 line just explains 95% of the movie
Surely the acting and filming was ok even though the russian accents at time became a bit annoying but for me these things only really go that far. What I look for in a movie mainly is to be blown away by a good story that takes me places where I didn't expect, makes me think about things or makes me emotional in either a way where I cry or am full of joy. The best Anora did in this regard was make me a bit horny with all the sex going on but nothing more really.
The trailer at the start states that it's a love story which for me it by no means it.
Conclusion
So overall this movie kind of confirmed my rather low expectation and it didn't get further than the plotline which pretty much is 95% of the actual movie. I still didn't hate it though and did kind of enjoy watching it even though I found it a bit too long. The fact that it won best movie feels more because of political correctness as it was time for a movie about a sex worker to get in the spotlight. 6.6/10
