The story follows Cliff, a salesman who sales defibrillators from the back of his Oldsmobile. Is a man that is trying to do things in the straight way, trying to be the support and provider of his family. Unfortunately things are not going well for Cliff, running out of money and his wife remember him that they need money to pay the bills he is getting anxious. The day came when he is fired, sick and tired of his situation he decided to go with an old friend, a man that he hasn’t seen for about a year, Cliff tried to avoid that person because belong to his dark past but now seems that he is the only person that can help him get out of his misery. Ricky his old partner in crime doesn’t look surprise of see him again. Ricky is a drug and gun dealer, who sales his products to nasty people and a person with no moral at all. The team is back again and Cliff explain the plan, a big reckless plan to double cross a drug dealer. Cliff and Ricky reunite with John, the drug dealer, who was really surprise with Cliff aspect, a normal and calm guy, and its was perfect for the job because he was an unexpected mule, even though John stated put the cards on the table and leaved a cleared statement, they have a deal and if something get wrong, everything that he is connect with will die. The salesman, the way that Josh called him was warned. Things after that weren’t getting better, Cliff and Ricky were in a shooting and Cliff presence how easily Ricky put a bullet in the head of two people making him think that he only needs and want to be next to him the necessary time no more than that, do the job and once again take each one is path. Since this moment we are going to witness who Cliff is going to survive to this job and how can return his life to a peaceful point.

The Director behind the Camera

The director of Blood for Dust is Rod Blackhurst. He is an American director, producer and screenwriter. The director is best known as the Emmy and Critics Choice nominated director for the original Documentary Amanda Knox and for the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award winning Narrative Film for Here Alone. He has directed a number of award winning short films including SXSW Official selection Would You, Short of the Week Mommy, Alone Time and Hysteric. He also directed and showman the documentary John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise. This 2024 Universal Pictures released the movie Nigh Swim directed by him. Now he is bringing the movie Blood for Dust, a thriller about a man that will do whatever he needs to provide his family what they need even though he was to bring back his criminal life. This movie was premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2023. The director is also known for his work as commercial director for different brands such as Airbnb, Delt, etc.

A Closer Look at the Cast

The cast of Blood for Dust comprises actors with considerable experience such as Scoot McNairy as Cliff. McNairy is an American actor and movie producer. He is known for his roles in movies such as in the movies Monsters 2001. Killing Theme Softly 2012, 12 Years of Slavery 2013 and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016. McNairy is a very versatile actor and for that reason this role is perfect for him. Kit Harington plays Ricky. Harrington is a English actor and is better known for his famous role as John Snow in the acclaimed HBO TV series Game of Thrones, for this role he received nominations for Golden Globe Award and two Prime time Emmy Awards. Josh Lucas plays John. Lucas is an American actor and is best known for his roles in movies such as Sweet Home Alabama 2002, Poseidon 2006, The Red Dog 2011 and many others.

Unfolding a World of Darkness

The story of Blood for Dust present to the audience the main character who is Cliff a salesman that is fighting every day to provide a good life to his family but at the end he lost his job and start thinking in what he is going to do know because he must keep his family living in the best way possible. He wanted to be a good person and reach the American Dream in a honest way but thing are not so simple and he choose to reunite with a person of his past, a person that used to be his partner in crime and who continues being a criminal. Since this point Cliff will start working Ricky, trying to complete his jobs and also trying to secure his family life.

Through Cliff’s story the movie wants to give a look of what a person is capable to do just to provide and give a good life to his family, letting us know, the audience, that Cliff has a past and not a good one, that he tried to never go back to it but the circumstances lwill force him to reunite with a old partner and an the old life of complexities, secrets, lies and survival.

Reception and Reflection

As many other movies Blood for Dust received a mixed response from the critics and viewers who have the opportunity to visualized the movie in the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2023. Some mention that the movie was the best film of the festival, with great performances, in special Scoot McNairy as Cliff, was mention that was excited sees Kit Harington is this new character so we can appreciate that in fact is a good actor not only John Snow and the direction by Rod Blackhurst was great for the action and twist giving in the movie, but on the other hand there is critics that didn’t enjoy the movie, mentioning that it was too slow, that the cast was not well selected, the dialogue was boring and that the story was too predictable. Despite those comments, the true is that the movie wants to show the dark side of human nature and what is capable to do a person to seek a better life.

The filming of Blood for Dust began in November and ended in December 2022, in the location of Billings, Montana. The production reunite a talented cast and the perfect staff to work is synergy and completed the filming process with any delay and without significant controversies.

A story of person that wants to have a good life, an honest job and reach their goals is an endless story both in movies and in real life and that is the premise of the story of Blood for Dust but with a twist that can also have a person in real life. A man that was a criminal with a nice appearance, that decided that doesn’t want to continue in that path and wanted to straighten his life, but life is not easy and is force to want more time be a criminal to give his family a better life. Blood for Dust is a real life story for many people captured in a movie but in this case the movie is showing as it is title says blood, because is shooting, drugs, running, hiding and in case of the protagonist sacrifices. Blood for Dust is movie that can be enjoy just for be an action movie or is we look deep on it a movie of redemption and overcoming, Cliff the main character is fighting for his family, for his wife, for his life and for a better future, probably in the worst way but is one way that he knows and he will risk anything for his family. Many people will identify with Cliff not in the part that he was and more time decided to be criminal but in the side of wake up everyday to work for a better life, to reach our goals, to give our family a place to called home and a good future. Blood for Dust is a movie that will send a message and as audience we are all invite to reach what is the best message for each one of us.
