Breathe (2024) : Competing for Oxygen on a Post Apocalyptic World
After going through the trailer, cast and the few reviews online which seem to be very low mostly due to people complaining about the ethnic around the story so I would not put much attention into the current reviews although what is certain is that this movie most likely has nothing that we have not seen under the sun.
Milla Jovovich the infamous Leeloo from The Fifth Element comes back in another post apocalyptic movies, the women did 6 Resident Evil movies and not one got an online score of 8, from her IMDB profile I could only found one movie where she act and was the main character the rest are mostly in the mid lower range to be honest not sure why, there were some of the Resident Evil that I did like, point been is that this women has the word apocalypse on her resume and for some of us we are use to watch her on this type of movies.
Breathe a Sci-Fi movie, directed by Stefon Bristol. The story starts with Maya and her daughter Zora who struggle to survive in a world that is running out of oxygen but her husband has been working on an oxygen generator problem is that he has been missing for some time and the news got out of this generator, comes in Tess played by Resident Evil girl Milla Jovovich who says she can get the generator to work but Maya refuse to let them in, Tess is decided to get in one way or another because she wont let her friends die.

Stefon Bristol: New Visionary Director
Breathe director Stefon Bristol for now is not a well known director but mostly because he doesn't have too many production under his belt, American born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, his debut was the short film See You Yesterday which in fact was a thesis project that latter on kept expanding into a feature film that got a lot of positive feedback but as usual not the best ratings online in websites like IMDB, the internet is hard to break, the plot was two prodigies teenagers who build a Time Machine to safe one of their brother from been killed by a police officer in Brooklyn, the short film made it to Netflix on 2019. From what I could find on his IMDB profile he work as part of the crew for BlacKkKlansman (2018) directed by Spike Lee one of the influential figures on Stefon short career so far.
Breathe cast has a few well known faces and I think taking this project for him might be one of those movies that start to set the foundation of a career until one of this low / mid budget movies with a few well known faces on the cast generate enough buzz that catapults a director into bigger projects.
The Environmental Message
Breathe touches on many environmental aspects from air pollution that leads into other matters since are and water mean life, you cant have things like vegetation, clear skies or most things in nature without air / oxygen, humans are force to live underground due to oxygen scarcity only making short trips to the surface to scavenge supplies touching on the survival instinct of humans and the lengths people will go to protect their love ones even if this means hurt, kill or let others die, this is no new concept for the type of post apocalypse world theme. We still live in times where air is free because there is enough and the planet can still keep producing it but water is a total ball park, after around the times of the Pandemic there have been drastic climatic changes around the world that has cause the lack of rain making water scarce on places where there was enough before, its almost a guarantee that if we keep depleting the planet both oxygen and water will become a more valuable asset than any currency or precious metal in the world.
From the images on the trailer the place does look like a harsh wasteland, everything is so orange giving the feeling that the place is full of dust and some how the sun light has been dramatically affected by the sky probably heavily polluted, this kind of environment I personally find it annoying and in the past I have seen it been use in many movies that want to present just that to the viewers, a very harsh surrounding to live in, the movie at least by the name and the implementation of face mask to "Breathe" does a good job at tricking your mind to think on how hard must be or close to impossible breathe any oxygen under this conditions.
Cast running out of oxygen.
- Jennifer Hudson a Oscar winning for her performance in the movie Dreamgirls (2006) for best supporting actress although this movie did not receive any high online ratings from the audience, she is an actress and singer plays the role of Maya, she has been known for several productions like Dreamgirls, Sex and The City also shown her talent as a singer in other movies such as Sing and Cats, another well known face not stranger at all.
- Milla Jovovich plays Tess, she is Miss. Apocalyptic from the well known movies Resident Evil, particularly Resident Evil: Extinction has a similar harsh surrounding as shown in Breath. Milla is probably the most famous from the movie The Fifth Element a great hit from the 90s with Bruce Willis, she brings in the experience of performing on this type of similar movies where the world is about to end.
- The actor Common plays as Darius, Maya's husband who has gone missing and left them with an oxygen generator but not knowing how to operate it, I personally remember him from the great recent TV Series Silo (2023) but he has also appear on some other of my favorite movies like John Wick: Chapter 2 and an early 2000's movie probably peak performance for Angelina Jolie, Wanted (2008), Common had a secondary role in it.
Same as I try to bring all kind of great movies to my blog I also try to bring those that are not so popular that might be a good watch, Breathe (2024) is one of those that "might" be a good watch at least a one time watch movie, from the trailer there are some cool scenes, lot of shooting there is even a flame thrower spiting lot of fire scene, Milla does know how to play the survivor role, there is one night scene and their mask look very cool with LED on inside and I think the mask has a system to notify you running out of oxygen, they can only run small oxygen tanks to move around. Besides the script there is the CGI that concern me because the entire world is a wasteland so there are several shots of bridges and buildings all destroy and this is the constant theme around so I hope CGI is on point, at the end of the day I will give it a try and flip the coin hoping that at least I can finish the movie.
