Tantas teorías científicas cercan la verdad acerca de, por ejemplo, los viajes en el tiempo. ¿Son estos posibles? Einstein, en sus estudios de la física y la relatividad, nos dio una pequeña esperanza: agujeros negros. Masas gigantescas con una densidad tan grande que son capaces, incluso, de absorber la luz. Admito que alguna vez tuve un peculiar interés por las leyes del “espacio – tiempo”, no obstante, ojalá hubiera hallado yo una manera tan didáctica de entenderla como Jonathan y Christopher Nolan la ensayaron en su obra “Interestelar”. Es ciencia ficción, lo sé, pero hasta cierto punto…

Einstein, in his studies of physics and relativity, gave us a little hope: black holes. Gigantic masses with a density so great that they are even capable of absorbing light. I admit that once I had a peculiar interest in the laws of "space - time", however, I wish I had found such a didactic way of understanding it as Jonathan and Christopher Nolan rehearsed it in their work "Interstellar". It's science fiction, I know, but up to a point...

Nunca me interesó esta película a pesar de todo el revuelo que causó. Estaba yo preocupado por otras cosas. El fenómeno Interestelar, por otro lado, pisaba los talones de mi interés. Creo que ha sido el largometraje que mi hermano menor más me ha recomendado, pero que no vi por sus insistencias. Hace poco tuve una conversación muy interesante con un primo sobre la relatividad. Me habló de tantas cosas ya olvidadas por mí que el tema, almacenado en lo profundo de la mente, regresó a mis pensamientos. Al ver las estrellas en el manto celeste supe que, allá en lo basto del cosmos, conviven una infinidad de galaxias en las que es probable que haya un planeta similar al nuestro. Hay, sin embargo, un inconveniente: aunque lo podamos ver, es posible que ya no exista.

Mi primo me habló con tanta pasión del tema de la relatividad, que en verdad pensé que había estudiado la teoría, pero me confesó que sus conocimientos fueron revelados por una peli llamada “Interestelar”. Soy honesto al decir que me sorprendió porque, en términos de ficción, la ciencia pura es poco agraciada. De allí la “ciencia ficción”, que deja en libertad el poder del conocimiento. Tantas incógnitas sobre lo “buena o mala” que podría ser la película me obligaron a verla. Me interesaba el tratamiento científico de la cinta más que su propio argumento, el cual relata en términos simples la ya redundante proyección hacia una humanidad extinta.

Ya conocía yo el trabajo de los hermanos Nolan. Me encanta, de hecho, la madurez con la que construyen sus meollos dramáticos; para muestra un botón: Westworld, Batman, Memento. Interestelar es otra pieza cinematográfica que comprueba la trayectoria de estos individuos que comparten genética. ¡Y vaya de qué forma!

I was never interested in this movie despite all the buzz it caused. I was worried about other things. The Interstellar phenomenon, on the other hand, was on the heels of my interest. I think it has been the feature film that my younger brother has recommended me the most, but that I didn't see because of his insistence. I recently had a very interesting conversation with a cousin about relativity. He told me about so many things already forgotten by me that the subject, stored deep in my mind, returned to my thoughts. When I saw the stars in the celestial mantle, I learned that, out there in the vastness of the cosmos, an infinity of galaxies coexist in which there is probably a planet similar to ours. There is, however, a downside: even if we can see it, it may no longer exist.

My cousin spoke to me with such passion about the subject of relativity, that I really thought that he had studied the theory, but he confessed to me that his knowledge was revealed by a movie called "Interstellar". I'm honest in saying that he surprised me because, in terms of fiction, pure science is unprepossessing. Hence “science fiction”, which unleashes the power of knowledge. So many unknowns about how "good or bad" the film could be forced me to see it. I was interested in the scientific treatment of the film more than its own plot, which recounts in simple terms the already redundant projection towards an extinct humanity.

I already knew the work of the Nolan brothers. I love, in fact, the maturity with which they build their dramatic kernels; to show a button: Westworld, Batman, Memento. Interstellar is another cinematographic piece that checks the trajectory of these individuals who share genetics. And wow in what way!

Volvemos entonces a la paradójica situación de un planeta moribundo. La ilusión de las colonias planetarias regresa en el contexto de la distorsión del tiempo. Un agujero negro aparece de pronto en las cercanías de Saturno, brindando una esperanza para una humanidad que sucumbe a la extinción inminente de la vida. En una misión especial en la que se pretende explorar planetas habitables fuera de la galaxia, Joseph Cooper tendrá la labor de comandar a un grupo de astronautas para salvar tanto a su familia como al resto del mundo. Lo que no se imaginaba era que en su aventura cósmica entenderá la difícil encrucijada de la barrera en el tiempo, el engaño, y la distorsión cuántica de las dimensiones.

La película es larga: más de dos horas de duración. Sin embargo, cada detalle, cada diálogo y cada escena se construyen para que el espectador se familiarice con la paradoja del tiempo. Hay un viaje en los tres ejes temporales: pasado, presente y futuro. Los misterios son tan absolutos como las propias teorías que garantizan los tropiezos nacidos con la velocidad de la luz. Interestelar es como un rompecabezas galáctico. Pieza a pieza observamos la conexión temporal que resulta ser nuestro talón de Aquiles. Imagina que un día de tu vida sea cien años de la vida de tu amigo más cercano, ahora toma en cuenta que con cada día que pasa tienes menos posibilidades de verlo si los dos se encuentran en países distintos. Es difícil ir contra eso, pero tal vez existan maneras de usar la relatividad para lograrlo.

De hecho, en la película se muestra la alternativa de la gravedad en la distorsión de las dimensiones. El ingenio detrás de esta película se basa en emplear lo desconocido en el ámbito de la ciencia para diseñar hipótesis que puedan o no ser realidades. Nadie ha viajado en el horizonte de un agujero negro, pero la ciencia sí sabe cómo se comportan, y ese enlace entre las leyes científicas y cinematográficas convierte este largometraje es un espectáculo hiperrealista. No hay dados al azar: cada fragmento de Interestelar es un viaje fenomenal hacia el monstruoso tiempo que se comporta como un amigo y enemigo a la vez.

Interstellar is like a galactic puzzle. Piece by piece we observe the temporal connection that turns out to be our Achilles heel. Imagine that one day in your life is one hundred years in the life of your closest friend, now take into account that with each passing day you have less chance of seeing him if the two of you are in different countries. It's hard to go against that, but maybe there are ways to use relativity to do it.

In fact, the film shows the alternative of gravity in the distortion of dimensions. The ingenuity behind this film is based on using the unknown in the field of science to design hypotheses that may or may not be realities. No one has traveled on the horizon of a black hole, but science does know how they behave, and that link between scientific and cinematographic laws makes this feature film a hyper-realistic spectacle. There are no random dice: each fragment of Interstellar is a phenomenal journey back into monstrous time that is both friend and foe.

Fue maravilloso mirar a Anne Hathaway haciendo equipo con Matthew McConaughey, y finalmente a Matt Damon uniéndose al grupo. Me gustó, además, la composición de sus personajes. No me bastó mucho para entender que los protagonistas debían comunicar, en términos sencillos, la complejidad de la relatividad. Quedé encantado por la forma en la que los hermanos Nolan conjugaron las piezas del “Espacio – Tiempo”, algo que no hubieran logrado sin la ayuda del físico Kip Thorne, quien tiene un grandioso historial en las teorías relativistas y el estudio de los agujeros de gusano. No podía dejar de indagar la razón lógica detrás de este largometraje, y que un científico haya colaborado para su confección me parece alucinante.

El argumento quizás es repetitivo en cuanto al destino que le espera a la humanidad, pero, ¿no es un escenario que ya se ha planteado antes? Si algún día nuestro planeta deja de funcionar, hay que pensar en alternativas para rescatar la vida, y creo que por ahora los avances científicos no permiten hazañas tan grandes como las que se muestran en la película. La verdad es que en el giro final del largometraje pensé seriamente en el escenario de la distorsión del tiempo, y de cómo podemos emplear el pasado no para cambiarlo, sino para dar señales que puedan orillar mejorar el futuro.

It was wonderful to see Anne Hathaway teaming up with Matthew McConaughey, and finally Matt Damon joining the group. I also liked the composition of his characters. It wasn't enough for me to understand that the protagonists had to communicate, in simple terms, the complexity of relativity. I was delighted by the way in which the Nolan brothers put together the pieces of "Space - Time", something that they would not have achieved without the help of the physicist Kip Thorne , who has a great track record in relativistic theories and the study of wormholes. I couldn't stop investigating the logical reason behind this feature film, and that a scientist collaborated in making it seems amazing to me.

The argument may be repetitive in terms of the fate that awaits humanity, but isn't it a scenario that has been raised before? If one day our planet stops working, you have to think of alternatives to rescue life, and I think that for now scientific advances do not allow feats as great as those shown in the film. The truth is that in the final twist of the film I seriously thought about the time distortion scenario, and how we can use the past not to change it, but to give signs that can improve the future.

Interestelar es una película muy completa, casi fiel a la verdad absoluta del tiempo, porque todavía la hazaña de los agujeros negros está lejos de nuestro alcance. Ahora, hay que considerar que aunque no volvamos al pasado, sí podemos verlo, sobre todo cuando vez las estrellas. La luz del sol tarda unos ocho minutos en llegar a la tierra, o sea, que miramos una luz del pasado. Claro que este no es un contenido científico, más bien está relacionado con el cine. No quiere decir que ambos no puedan llevarse de la mano. De todas formas la peli me gustó mucho, y me emocionó ver escenas donde la relatividad hacía de las suyas. No sé si pueda yo volver en el tiempo, pero de hacerlo, le diría a mi yo del pasado que se equivocó al no ver el largometraje. Ese salto temporal sería una completa paradoja…

Mejor esperemos que alguien construya una máquina del tiempo.

Now, we must consider that even if we don't go back to the past, we can see it, especially when you see the stars. Light from the sun takes about eight minutes to reach the earth, that is, we are looking at a light from the past. Of course, this is not a scientific content, rather it is related to the cinema. It does not mean that both cannot hold hands. In any case, I liked the movie a lot, and I was moved to see scenes where relativity did its thing. I don't know if I can go back in time, but if I did, I would tell my past self that he was wrong not to see the feature film. That time jump would be a complete paradox...

Let's just hope someone builds a time machine.
