He caído en un pésimo bucle en el que no encuentro algún ánimo para ver una película o una serie de televisión, ¿razón? Quizás las demandantes ocupaciones que he tenido desde hace algunos días: cursos, proyectos, nuevas ideas de trabajo, etc. Hay una excepción, desde luego, y se trata de Love, Death & Robots. El vistazo que le di a la segunda temporada me hizo anhelar ver la tercera. Me vi los nueve episodios un día a la vez, mientras degustaba el almuerzo y podía estar libre de alguna tarea. Esto de ver cosas mientras degusto comida se ha convertido, al menos por ahora, en una alternativa para disfrutar del entretenimiento televisado y las producciones cinematográficas.

Hablando de Love, Death & Robots Vol III: una buena colección de historias poderosas y demoledoras. La tercera antología es un viaje de ida pero no de vuelta: ¡contemplad el milagro de las travesías de ensueño! No es algo bueno del todo, por cierto.

I've fallen into a lousy loop in which I can't find some mood to watch a movie or a TV series, reason? Perhaps the demanding occupations I've had for a few days now: courses, projects, new work ideas, etc. There is one exception, of course, and that is Love, Death & Robots. The glimpse I got of the second season made me long to watch the third. I watched all nine episodes one day at a time, while I was tasting lunch and could be free from some homework. This watching things while tasting food thing has become, at least for now, an alternative way to enjoy televised entertainment and movie productions.

Speaking of Love, Death & Robots Vol III: a fine collection of powerful and shattering stories. The third anthology is a one-way trip but not a return trip: behold the miracle of dream voyages! Not a good thing at all, by the way.

Esta vez he disfrutado de cada episodio; a diferencia de las temporadas anteriores, en Love, Death & Robots Vol III hay un cuidado mucho mayor en la temática de cada capítulo. Algunos con un humor ácido, otros con un suspenso inquietante y por supuesto, algunos con una esencia mística “de otro mundo”. Las referencias abundan aquí y allá: he vuelto a ver aires del horror cosmológico, el cual es uno de mis favoritos. La tendencia a dejarnos con la duda, por otro lado, es el toque especial antes de servir el plato, por decirlo en términos culinarios, XD.

Creo que esta vez los productores de Love, Death & Robots supieron cómo construir una colección de antologías evitando esa curva de altibajos que caracterizó a las temporadas pasadas. O sea, ya no se trató de hacer un episodio muy bueno y otros no tan buenos; hubo una mayor ambición… cada historia tuvo algo en común: demostrar que tan abstracta es la maravilla de la creación.

Fue difícil elegir un grupo de episodios favoritos, incluso me atrevería a decir que todos los fueron porque todos me pusieron a pensar. Haciendo un esfuerzo impensable, me atreví a seleccionarlos basándome en su complejidad argumental.

This time I enjoyed every episode; unlike the previous seasons, in Love, Death & Robots Vol III there is a much greater care in the theme of each chapter. Some with an acid humor, others with a disturbing suspense and of course, some with an "otherworldly" mystical essence. References abound here and there: I have seen again airs of cosmological horror, which is one of my favorites. The tendency to leave us guessing, on the other hand, is the special touch before serving the dish, to put it in culinary terms, XD.

I think this time the producers of Love, Death & Robots knew how to build an anthology collection avoiding that curve of ups and downs that characterized past seasons. That is, it was no longer about making one very good episode and others not so good; there was a greater ambition... each story had something in common: to show how abstract the wonder of creation is.

It was hard to pick a favorite group of episodes, I would even go so far as to say they all were because they all got me thinking. Making an unthinkable effort, I dared to select them based on their plot complexity.

1 - Jíbaro

¡Vaya despliegue de amor y obsesión! En las aguas mágicas de una tierra desconocida, un soldado sordo se libra de la muerte más no de la belleza: pedazos de metales preciosos que danzan en el cuerpo de una sirena lo condenan al castigo de la codicia. Ella, por otro lado, está asombrada por el misterioso don de aquel hombre que se resiste a sus cantos mortales. Debajo de las aguas, donde reposan los tesoros verdaderos apilados en huesos y cadáveres, espera un agrio destino para quien ose sobrevivir al lago sangriento con forma de corazón.

Este episodio fue para mí el mejor: no hay diálogos, solo sonido, solo imágenes difusas que combinan con la tensa atmósfera de un amor en verdad agonizante, si es que se le puede llamar “amor” en primer lugar.

What a display of love and obsession! In the magical waters of an unknown land, a deaf soldier is spared death but not beauty: pieces of precious metals dancing in the body of a mermaid condemn him to the punishment of greed. She, on the other hand, is amazed by the mysterious gift of that man who resists her deadly songs. Beneath the waters, where the real treasures lie piled up in bones and corpses, a sour fate awaits whoever dares to survive the heart-shaped bloody lake.

This episode was for me the best: no dialogue, only sound, only fuzzy images that match the tense atmosphere of a truly agonizing love, if it can be called "love" in the first place.

2 - The Very Pulse of the Machine

Siguiendo con los ritmos alucinantes, está “The Very Pulse of the Machine”. Una suerte de conexión entre un mecanismo planetario y una astronauta que intenta sobrevivir tras una fallida exploración. La guía proviene de las estrellas y los alucinógenos, ¿Qué es real y que no lo es? Difícil… muy difícil de deducir si no mantienes la mente abierta. Cerca de un júpiter enorme, en los cielos rojos y carentes de oxigeno de una de sus lunas, la sobreviviente deberá enfrentar junto a ti la compleja línea entre la realidad y la demencia. Los colores, en esta ocasión, bordan la pantalla con psicodelia.

¿Serás capaz de sobrevivir?

Continuing with the hallucinatory rhythms, there is "The Very Pulse of the Machine". A sort of connection between a planetary mechanism and an astronaut trying to survive after a failed exploration. Guidance comes from the stars and hallucinogens, what is real and what is not? Difficult... very difficult to deduce if you don't keep an open mind. Near a huge Jupiter, in the red, oxygen-deprived skies of one of its moons, the survivor will have to face with you the complex line between reality and insanity. The colors, on this occasion, embroider the screen with psychedelia.

3 – In Vaulted Halls Entombed

He aquí la presencia del Horror místico (y tal vez cosmológico) que tanto me gusta: un grupo de soldados mete sus narices por error en unas cavernas repletas de peligros, y aun peor: de un ser jamás imaginado por la humanidad. Tus ojos son tu peor amenaza, aunque nada en realidad puede salvarte. In Vaulted Halls Entombed es un episodio con elementos curiosos; desde el principio comienzas a deducir el porqué de aquella encrucijada mortal. Si te fijas bien entenderás la lógica que envuelve esta historia, y quizás notaras algunas referencias claras a la literatura de lovecraft.

Here is the presence of the mystical (and perhaps cosmological) horror that I like so much: a group of soldiers mistakenly stick their noses into caverns full of dangers, and even worse: a being never imagined by mankind. Your eyes are your worst threat, although nothing can really save you. In Vaulted Halls Entombed is an episode with curious elements; from the beginning you begin to deduce the reason for that deadly crossroads. If you look closely you will understand the logic that surrounds this story, and perhaps you will notice some clear references to Lovecraft's literature.

4 - Mason's Rats

Para mí este es el más pintoresco de la antología, no solo por su argumento embalsamado con un humor irónico, sino por esa salvaje muestra de imágenes que develan la batalla entre el hombre y la rata… aunque para esta ocasión las ratas han tomado inteligencia.

Le tomé cariño al episodio porque en cierta manera me identifico con los involucrados, por un lado el viejo Mason que desea purgar sus graneros de la plaga roedora, y por el otro las ratas que solo quieren un lugar para vivir. En ocasiones odiamos algo sin conocerlo, quizás por su naturaleza, pero hay algo que todos los seres vivos con conciencia tenemos en común: compasión, y un odio terrible por las masacre. En términos de comprensión, aludo al proverbio que dice:

Mason's Rats es un ejemplo contrario a lo que se estima en dicha frase; te quedarás sorprendido cuando lo descubras, XD.

For me this is the most picturesque of the anthology, not only for its plot embalmed with ironic humor, but for that wild display of images that unveil the battle between man and rat... although for this occasion the rats have taken intelligence.

I took a liking to the episode because in a way I identify with those involved, on the one hand old Mason who wants to purge his barns of the rodent plague, and on the other the rats who just want a place to live. Sometimes we hate something without knowing it, perhaps because of its nature, but there is something that all living beings with a conscience have in common: compassion, and a terrible hatred for slaughter. In terms of understanding, I allude to the proverb that says:

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend..."

Mason's Rats is a counter example to what is estimated in that phrase; you'll be shocked when you find out, XD.

En algún lugar leí sobre las posibilidades de una cuarta temporada de Love, Death & Robots, por lo pronto, he quedado maravillado por el despliegue de esta antología animada de historias salvajes, dolorosas y trágicas, pero aun así maravillosas. Espero encontrar más producciones como estas… uno pasa un rato agradable (aun con escenas descabelladas) mientras, por ejemplo, se degusta un rico almuerzo, XD.

Somewhere I read about the possibilities of a fourth season of Love, Death & Robots, so far, I've been amazed by the unfolding of this animated anthology of wild, painful and tragic, but still wonderful stories. I hope to find more productions like these... one has a nice time (even with outlandish scenes) while, for example, tasting a nice lunch, XD.
