En un mundo con escasez de alimentos, a la compañía monopólica denominada "Mirando" se le ocurre la brillante idea de crear especies genéticamente modificadas para inundar a la humanidad de una carne que promete ser la invención milagrosa para erradicar los estómagos vacíos.

Con el afán de la gloria y la promesa de diez años, Lucy Mirando, o la gemela del mal, traza una estrategia para que 10 de los llamados supercerdos sean criados en varias granjas alrededor del mundo. Todo parece marchar bien hasta que una niña surcoreana, encariñada con el supercerdo que crió su abuelo para el matadero de dicha corporación, decide salvar a la comida viviente que considera como amiga, y poner en evidencia aquel refrán tan popular de los vegetarianos: la carne no es comida... o al menos la carne de la supercerdita a la que ella considera como hermana.

With the pursuit of glory and the promise of ten years, Lucy Mirando, or the evil twin, plots a strategy for 10 so-called super pigs to be bred on various farms around the world. All seems to be going well until a South Korean girl, fond of the super pig her grandfather raised for the corporation's slaughterhouse, decides to save the living food she considers a friend and to put to shame that popular saying of vegetarians: meat is not food... or at least the meat of the super pig she considers a sister.

Okja y la lucha contra el ciclo natural

Mija vive con su abuelo y su mascota Okja, la supercerda gigante que parece más humana que los propios humanos que la quieren guisada en el horno. Claro que Mija no sabe que Okja forma parte de un experimento de diez años que busca al mejor espécimen, así como cualquier esas ferias dónde se premian a los mejores cerdos con el filo de los cuchillos y el sabor de los asados. La niña, radicada en alguna provincia montañosa de surcorea, ignora el peligro futuro compartiendo con su deliciosa mascota: salen a pescar, camina por las montañas, recogen manzanas y hasta se salvan de precipicios. El abuelo, que resulta ser un viejo mentiroso, le dice a Mija que no se preocupe, que él (¡vaya descarado!) compró a Mija y ninguna corporación malvada se la llevará...

Un día después se llevan a Okja.

Y entonces, la pobre Mija se embarca por las peligrosas calles de Seúl a rescatar a su amiga porque, o sea, ella no va a permitir que se la despellejen y la sirvan con papas. En su travesía de lágrimas se topa con unos ecologistas que pueden ayudarla, sin saber que la decisión que la obligan a tomar la llevará a New York, donde el verdadero peligro les espera a las dos.

Okja and the fight against the natural cycle

Mija lives with her grandfather and his pet Okja, the giant super pig that looks more human than the humans themselves who want it stewed in the oven. Of course, Mija doesn't know that Okja is part of a ten-year experiment that looks for the best specimen, just like any of those fairs where the best pigs are awarded with the sharpness of the knives and the taste of the roasts. The girl, who lives in some mountainous province of South Korea, ignores the future danger by sharing with her delicious pet: they go fishing, walk in the mountains, pick apples, and even save themselves from cliffs. Grandpa, who turns out to be an old liar, tells Mija not to worry, that he (cheeky guy!) bought Mija and no evil corporation will take her away...

A day later Okja is taken away.

And then, poor Mija embarks through the dangerous streets of Seoul to rescue her friend because, I mean, she's not going to let herself be skinned and served with potatoes. On her tearful journey, she encounters some environmentalists who can help her, unaware that the decision they force her to make will lead her to New York, where real danger awaits them both.

No es una pelicula perfecta, pero...

Okja es una película que plantea la amistad, quizás como la planteó Lassie y otras tantas de perros, gatos o cualquier animal que termina siendo el mejor amigo del mundo. Ahora bien, acá lo nuevo, al menos para mí, es el asunto de la modificación genética. El resto de cosas no es tan diferente a lo que ya hemos visto. Si tan solo el largometraje hubiera cuidado más su trama, profundizando más la conexión entre las protagonistas, quizás hubiese sido más reconocida. Durante todo el film odié la relación tan seca entre Mija y Okja, o sea, una era muy seca (Mija) y la otra tenía demasiada IA (Okja).

Los primeros minutos de Mija y Okja son muy planos, detalles que tal vez se remiendan más adelante con el efecto de las lágrimas. El largometraje, aunque parece tener temática infantil, suele ser crudo en algunos puntos más fríos de la trama. En todo sentido, creo que el film va más dirigido a los amantes de los animales, y a los que alguna vez compartieron un gran afecto con una mascota fuera de lo común, como por ejemplo, las vacas que se comen, los pollos que se comen, los cerdos que se comen, etc.

Is not a perfect film, but...

Okja is a movie about friendship, perhaps like Lassie and many others about dogs, cats, or any animal that ends up being the best friend in the world. Now, what is new here, at least for me, is the issue of genetic modification. Everything else is not so different from what we have already seen. If only the film had taken more care with its plot, deepening the connection between the protagonists, it might have been more recognizable. Throughout the entire film I hated the very dry relationship between Mija and Okja, that is, one was too dry (Mija) and the other had too much AI (Okja).

The first few minutes of Mija and Okja are very flat, with details that are perhaps patched up later with the effect of tears. The feature film, while seemingly child-themed, tends to be crude at some of the cooler plot points. In every sense, I think the film is more aimed at animal lovers and those who once shared a great affection for an out-of-the-ordinary pet, such as cows being eaten, chickens being eaten, pigs being eaten, etc.

Una combinación de sentimientos y culturas

¿Tiene la historia un final feliz? Depende si te gustan o no las chuletas de cerdo. En escena aparecen algunos rostros conocidos de la industria del cine, como la madame Tilda Swinton (a la que le temo desde Las Crónicas de Narnia) quien interpreta a las gemelas desquiciadas de la malvada corporación de Mirando. Glenn de The Walking Dead también aparece... bueno, mejor dicho: Steven Yeun. Y por último, pero no menos importante, verás a Jake Gyllenhaal como un desquiciado veterinario al que le encanta el sadomasoquismo con los animales. Okja tiene un buen elenco, y creo que esto es bastante determinante para el mediano éxito, al menos en el aspecto crítico que tuvo la película.

Durante el film el lenguaje coreano y el inglés se superponen, o sea, no hay un solo idioma. Me gustó esto; por un momento recordé algunos viejos K-Dramas (de los pocos que he visto) y supuse que habría una buena presentación dramática, y que la peli iba a ser supertriste. A mí no me hizo llorar, pero me ayudó a no arrepentirme de la costumbre de no comerme a las gallinas que alguna vez críe y consideraba como mis mascotas. Es extraño, lo sé, sobre todo porque me encanta el pollo frito y el cerdo horneado... allí la intención del largometraje y su mensaje. Al menos este aspecto sí me llevó a sacar muchas conjeturas.

A combination of feelings and cultures

Does the story have a happy ending? Depends if you like pork chops or not. A few familiar faces from the movie industry appear on the scene, such as Madame Tilda Swinton (whom I've been dreading since The Chronicles of Narnia) who plays the deranged twins of the evil Mirando corporation. Glenn from The Walking Dead also makes an appearance.... well, rather: Steven Yeun. And last but not least, you'll see Jake Gyllenhaal as an unhinged veterinarian who loves S&M with animals. Okja has a good cast, and I think this is quite determinant for the medium success, at least in the critical aspect that the film had.

During the film the Korean and English languages overlap, that is, there is not just one language. I liked this; for a moment I remembered some old K-Dramas (of the few I have seen) and I assumed that there would be a good dramatic presentation and that the movie was going to be super sad. It didn't make me cry, but it helped me not to regret the habit of not eating the chickens I once raised and considered my pets. It's strange, I know, especially since I love fried chicken and baked pork...therein lies the intent of the feature film and its message. At least this aspect did lead me to draw a lot of conjecture.

Okja plantea una relación de amor y odio con la carne. Vale, hay referentes un poco menos complejos, pero quizás imposibles de procesar cuando el cariño y el amor dominan una relación entre hombre y bestia. Digo: el ser humano se encariña, a veces, con las criaturas que deben, por ley natural, estar en su cena. Esto no sucede siempre, por supuesto. Yo lo asocio a la conexión. No es lo mismo sacrificar a un cerdo que apenas estás viendo o que criaste desde la distancia, a sacrificar a uno al que le diste biberón y lo llamaste "Mark". ¿Lo percibes? Sea cual sea el caso, amarás a Mark mientras comes cerdo con papas, pero como no es Mark, estarás tranquilo...

Okja no es tan diferente. Además, un cerdo de oro vale más que uno de carne. En este largometraje nacido de la mente de Bong Joon Ho descubrirás por qué.

Should you watch Okja?

Okja poses a love-hate relationship with meat. Okay, there are references a little less complex, but perhaps impossible to process when affection and love dominate a relationship between man and beast. I mean: the human being gets attached, sometimes, to creatures that should, by natural law, be in his dinner. This does not always happen, of course. I associate it with connection. It's not the same to slaughter a pig that you're barely seeing or that you raised from a distance, as it is to slaughter one that you bottle-fed and named "Mark." Do you sense that? Whatever the case, you'll love Mark while eating pork and potatoes, but since it's not Mark, you'll be calm....
