The Zone of Interest: On the other side of Auschwitz | Review

I'm back to fulfill my personal promise to do more movie reviews in this community. This promise also implies doing the reviews as I watch the movies, as well as crossing off a long list of movies I have to see. Today I bring you the review of a non-English speaking film that was on the list of film nominees for most of this year's awards, so I decided to watch The Zone of Interest.

Vuelvo para cumplir mi promesa personal de hacer más reseñas de cine en esta comunidad, esta promesa también implica ir haciendo las reseñas a medida que vaya viendo las películas, así como también, ir tachando una larga lista de películas que tengo por ver. Hoy les traigo la reseña de una película de habla no inglesa que estaba en la lista de nominados de películas de la mayoría de premios de este año, así que me decidía a ver The Zone of Interest.

"The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife strive to live a dream life in a house next to the concentration camp. But their routine is interrupted when Höss is reassigned to another camp, threatening everything they have built.” An interesting premise, for a film that arouses interest as the film progresses.

The film begins by showing a portrait of a large family sunbathing on the banks of a river. And as it progresses it shows us the beautiful home of this beautiful family, with a big yard, a big garden, the children playing, even a very playful little dog that is doing crazy things all their way. Nothing seemed strange, but once a young man in a dress, with shaved hair and a number on his suit, appears and picks up the boots of Commandant Höss to wash them. And in the foreground, we observe how he washes the blood accumulated on them. At that moment, you become aware that the manor house shares a wall with the fateful Auschwitz concentration camp.

”El comandante de Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, y su esposa se empeñan por llevar una vida de ensueño en una casa junto al campo de concentración. Pero su rutina es interrumpida cuando Höss es reasignado a otro campo, amenazando todo lo que han construido.” Una premisa interesante, para una película que despierta el interés a medida que va avanzando la película.

El filme empieza mostrando un retrato de una numerosa familia tomando el sol a las orillas de un río. Y mientras va avanzando nos muestra el hermoso hogar de esta hermosa familia, con un gran patio, un gran jardín, los niños jugando, hasta una perrita muy juguetona que va haciendo locuras por todo su camino. Nada parecía extraño, pero una vez que aparece un joven de vestidura, el pelo rapado y un número en su traje que recoge las botas del comandante Höss para lavarlas, y en primer plano observamos como lava la sangre acumulada en ellas. En ese momento tomas conciencia de que la solariega casa comparte paredón con el fatídico campo de concentración de Auschwitz.

When we talk about films corresponding to the World War II era, we have several currents: the war films, those where everything is focused on the armies. Of these, we have productions such as “Saving Private Ryan” or “Band of Brothers”, among many others. The dramatic: where they play with the most emotional part (in one way or another) that make us understand (or try to understand) the points of view of those who were part of the events that took place at the time. Productions such as “Schindler's List”, “The Fall” and “The Pianist” are a demonstration of what I am trying to share with you.

Now, on the film side, we have two types of productions: those that are made in order to be a blockbuster and those that are made in order to be art. While most of those named above were blockbusters, it doesn't take away from the artistic experience in these. However, The Zone of Interest was made to be art. Plus, it was released on Netflix, so obviously the main reason for this production went beyond the box office.

Cuando se hablan de películas correspondientes a la época de la Segunda Guerra Mundial tenemos varias corrientes: la bélica, esas son en donde todo se concentran en los ejércitos. De estas tenemos producciones como “Salvando al soldado Ryan” o “Band of Brothers”, entre muchas otras. La dramática: dónde juegan con la parte más emocional (de una u otra manera) que nos hacen entender, (o intentar entender) los puntos de vista de los que formaron parte de los sucesos ocurridos en la época. Producciones como “La Lista de Schindler”, “La caída” y “El pianista” son una demostración de lo que intento compartirles.

Ahora, por el lado del cine, tenemos dos tipos de producciones: los que se hacen con el fin de ser un blockbuster y los que se hacen con el fin de ser arte. Aunque la mayoría de las nombradas anteriormente fueron éxitos de taquilla, no se les quita la experiencia artística en estas. Sin embargo, The Zone of interest fue creada para ser arte. Además, de que fue estrenada en Netflix, así que obviamente la razón principal de esta producción iba a más allá de la taquilla.

In this English production film, the main protagonist is the attention to detail. We may be watching a seemingly simple scene, like a family eating dinner, for example, but if you pay attention to the sound, you can hear bullets or the footsteps of marching men. Also see the beautiful close-up shots of Mrs. Hoss's flowers and hear the screams of people being tortured or about to be killed on the other side of the wall.

It is no secret to anyone, nor is it considered a spoiler, everything that was going on in Auschwitz. The construction of the gas chambers for the elimination of some 700,000 Jews. The commander of this entire operation was the protagonist of this story that recounts the events before the gas chambers were installed. It is a journey through the experience of what became one of the cruelest stories in modern history.

En esta película de producción inglesa, el principal protagonista es la atención al detalle. Podemos estar viendo una escena que pareciera simple, como una familia tomando una cena, por ejemplo, pero si pones atención el sonido puedes escuchar balas o los pasos de hombres marchando. También ver las hermosas capturas en primer plano de las flores de la señora Hoss y escuchar gritos de las personas que están siendo torturadas o a punto de ser asesinadas al otro lado del muro.

No es un secreto para nadie, ni tampoco se considera spoiler, todo lo que pasaba en Auschwitz. La construcción de las cámaras de gas para la eliminación de alrededor de 700.000 judíos. El comandante de toda esta operación fue el protagonista de esta historia que recuenta los hechos antes de que instalaran las cámaras de gas. Es un viaje por la experiencia de lo que se convirtió en una de las historias más crueles de la historia moderna.

The film also explores the psychology of all those people, they made their lives on the edge of what was happening on the other side of the wall. How an exemplary mother raised her children and considered herself the queen of Auschwitz. How she talked and boasted about the construction of her house and took pride in her garden, ignoring any kind of noise happening on the other side, even sleeping peacefully at night. This stark contrast made me notice once again this of what represents the battle of good versus evil in cinema, with the representation of light and darkness. In this case, showing all the bad things that happen under the bright sunlight, and how some good things happen in the dark.

La película también explora la psicología de todas esas personas, hacían su vida al límite de lo que ocurría al otro lado del muro, como una madre ejemplar criaba a sus hijos y se consideraba a sí misma "La reina de Auschwitz", como hablaba y se vanagloriaba de la construcción de su casa y se enorgullecía de su jardín, haciendo caso omiso a cualquier tipo de ruido que ocurriera al otro lado, incluso, durmiendo plácidamente por las noches. Este contraste tan fuerte me hizo notar una vez más esto de lo que representa la lucha del bien contra el mal en el cine con la representación de la luz y la oscuridad, pero en este caso mostrando todas las cosas malas que ocurren bajo la brillante luz del sol, y como algunas cosas buenas ocurren en la oscuridad.

For all this and more, it was awarded the Oscar for Best International Feature Film and Best Sound. These decisions were not questioned, because the experience of watching this film is completely immersive, you must keep your senses open, because the details are minimal, but they are there. The cinematography is exquisite, and it also plays an important role when paired with the sound of this piece. They are a duo. It’s definitely art.

What you should keep in mind, and I don’t think I would recommend it for everyone, is that it could become boring for some because of the plot. In the eyes of those who like more dialogue, more action, and more movement, I don’t think they will like it. If they are die-hard movie buffs who like any kind of cinematic piece, then they will enjoy this production, which was perfect from beginning to end. By the way, the ending… Unbelievable.

Por todo esto y más, fue galardonada al premio Óscar por mejor película extranjera y por el mejor diseño sonido. No se puso bajo tela de juicio estas decisiones, porque la experiencia de ver esta película es completamente inmersiva, debes tener tus sentidos abiertos porque los detalles son mínimos, pero están ahí. La cinematografía es exquisita, y también juega un papel importante al juntarse con el sonido de esta pieza. Son un dúo. Definitivamente es arte.

Lo que deben tener en cuenta y no creo que la recomiende para todo el mundo, es que podría llegar a ser aburrida para algunos por la trama, que a los ojos de aquellos a los que les gustaste más diálogos, más acción y mayor movimiento, no creo que les agrade. Si son cinéfilos acérrimos de los que les gusta cualquier tipo de pieza cinematográfica, entonces se podrán degustar de esta producción, que fue perfecta de principio a fin. Por cierto, el final… Increíble.
