It is a 2009 Argentine film based on the novel La pregunta de sus ojos, it tells the story of Benjamín Espósito, a former judicial worker who has decided to write a novel about a homicide case in which he worked 20 years ago and in order to write his story he meets again the woman who was his boss at that time, the love of his life that he has kept secret.

Benjamin requests the file of this homicide to refresh his memory and put together the story of his novel, getting involved again with all the circumstances of that event, remembering his past and what he lived at that time.

Es una película Argentina del año 2009 basada en la novela La pregunta de sus ojos, cuenta la historia de Benjamín Espósito un ex trabajador judicial que ha decidido escribir una novela sobre un caso de homicidio en el que trabajó 20 años atrás y para escribir su historia se reencuentra con la que fue su jefa en esa época, el amor de su vida que ha mantenido en secreto.

Benjamín solicita el expediente de este homicidio para refrescar su memoria y armar la historia de su novela, involucrándose nuevamente con todas las circunstancias de ese hecho, recordando su pasado y lo que vivió en esa época.

Plot

The protagonist is Benjamin, an old and lonely man who had no children. After his retirement he was motivated to write a novel about a crime that went unpunished in a certain way, the victim was a young woman found in her own home with signs of rape and torture was murdered in broad daylight while her husband was working, it was a time where forensic evidence was not so advanced and most cases were solved by testimonies and possible coincidences.

As it was a brutal homicide it was covered by the press and the police had to find a culprit quickly, so without further evidence they proceeded to prosecute 3 men who were working construction near the site of the murder, these were undocumented migrants, the easy prey to involve and close the case. In addition, they served as a means of pressure and dispute of a prosecutor who was an enemy of Benjamin. A scene that seemed to me more fact than fiction.

The case was closed, but Benjamin was not convinced and continued investigating attending the victim's house and one day reviewing the old photos he observed how a man was looking at her in all the photos and decided to look for him, tying the ends and giving with the real murderer, while that happened he realized how patiently the husband of the victim continued to love her in silence in the hope that the murderer of his wife will pay for what he did.

Again, the trial was opened and the real murderer was sentenced, but this is where the story starts to get good, this criminal for good behavior and doing favors from prison to high government officials went free, then he went to work as an escort for politicians, this man now had power and knew who was behind his conviction.

In this part of the film I felt so frustrated and angry, as expressed by the characters of Benjamin, who was the prosecutor and the now widowed husband. Powerlessness and desire for justice were what I wanted, but not the justice of the laws we just saw, this one was useless.

These events were part of the past and Benjamin was only remembering them, he was able to find this murderer thanks to the help of his best friend and co-worker, who later became a victim of the criminal's revenge and who was able to defend his friend until the end, in this part of the movie friendship is presented as an unbreakable value and a treasure to whoever finds it. This part brought tears to my eyes.

While Benjamin was writing his novel, he realized that there were things about this case that were still unsolved and asked for help from his former boss both to read his draft and correct what he was writing in his novel and to dig into the case, finding a surprising story that is relieved at the end.

Argumento

El protagonista es Benjamín, un hombre mayor y solitario que no tuvo hijos. Después de su jubilación se motivó en escribir una novela sobre un crimen que quedó impune de cierta manera, la víctima fue una mujer joven encontraba en su propia casa con signos de violación y tortura fue asesinada a plena luz del día mientras su esposo se encontraba trabajando, era una época donde las pruebas forenses no estaban tan avanzadas y la mayoría de los casos se resolvían por testimonios y posibles coincidencias.

Como fue un homicidio brutal fue reseñado por la prensa y la policía tenía que encontrar un culpable rápidamente, así que sin mayores pruebas procedieron a enjuiciar a 3 hombres que estaban trabajando la construcción cercanos al lugar del homicidio, estos eran migrantes indocumentados la presa fácil para involucrar y cerrar el caso. Además, que sirvieron como medio de presión y disputa de un fiscal enemigo de Benjamín. Escena que me pareció más real que ficción.

El caso fue cerrado, pero Benjamín no estaba convencido y siguió investigando asistiendo a la casa de la víctima y un día revisando las fotos antiguas observó cómo un hombre la miraba en todas las fotos y decidió buscarlo, atando los cabos y dando con el verdadero homicida, mientras eso sucedía se dio cuenta cómo pacientemente el esposo de la víctima seguía amándola en silencio con la esperanza de que el asesino de su esposa pagará lo que hizo.

Nuevamente, se abrió el juicio y sentenciaron al verdadero asesino, pero aquí es donde se empieza a poner buena la historia, este criminal por buena conducta y hacerle favores desde la prisión a altos funcionarios del gobierno salió en libertad, para luego desempeñarse como escolta de políticos, este hombre ahora tenía poder y sabía quiénes estaban detrás de su condena.

En esta parte de la película me sentí tan frustrada y enojada, como lo expresaban los personajes de Benjamín, que era el fiscal y el esposo ahora viudo. Impotencia y deseo de justicia eran lo que quería, pero no la justicia de las leyes que acabamos de ver, esta no servía.

Estos sucesos eran parte del pasado y Benjamín solo los estaba recordando, él pudo dar con este asesino gracias a la ayuda de su mejor amigo y compañero de trabajo, quien luego fue víctima de la venganza del criminal y quien fue capaz de defender a su amigo hasta el final, en esta parte de la película se presenta la amistad como un valor inquebrantable y un tesoro a quien lo encuentre. Esta parte me hizo llorar.

Mientras Benjamín escribía su novela, se dio cuenta de que de este caso había cosas aun sin resolver y solicitó la ayuda de su antigua jefa tanto para leer su borrador y corregir lo que escribía en su novela como para indagar en el caso, encontrando una historia sorprendente que se releva al final.

Opinion

This film, although of the drama and suspense genre, is complemented by scenes of other genres such as humor, romance, intrigue and crime. It is not only a story of drama and suspense, there are so many elements that evoke feelings of love, nostalgia, pain, suspense, intrigue, impotence, revenge, compassion that keeps the viewer attentive for its unexpected twists and turns and closes with a surprising ending and although I could predict it minutes before, it is still an ending that will leave you with your mouth open.

The staging was careful, the objects that evoke a bygone era such as vehicles, telephones and costumes I really liked, because I remembered some I used 🤭😊.

It is a film that won great awards such as the best Argentine film of all time, Oscar award, Goya, among others and deserved because it is an excellent work of the seventh art and I recommend it especially for adult audiences, who know how laws, governments and societies work.

Esta película, aunque es del género drama y suspenso, se complementa con escenas de otros géneros como el humor, el romance, la intriga y el crimen. No es solo una historia de drama y suspenso, ahí tantos elementos que evocan sentimientos de amor de pareja, nostalgia, dolor, suspenso, intriga, impotencia, venganza, compasión que mantiene el espectador atento por sus giros inesperados y cierra con un final sorprendente y aunque pude predecirlo minutos antes no deja de ser un final que te dejará con la boca abierta.

La puesta en escena fue cuidadosa, los objetos que evocan una época pasada como vehículos, teléfonos y vestuario me gustaron mucho, porque recordé algunos que usé 🤭😊

Es una película que obtuvo grandes premios como la mejor película Argentina de todos los tiempos, premio Óscar, Goya, entre otros y merecidos porque es un excelente obra del séptimo arte y la recomiendo especialmente para el público adulto, que sabe cómo funcionan las leyes, los gobiernos y las sociedades.
