CINEMANIA 23: STIGMATA.
Hello my friends of hive and all this great platform I hope you are super good, a pleasure again here sharing with you all this world of cinema, here by cinemania. Today I want to talk about a movie that is not my favorite genre but this in particular I consider it a jewel of mystery and horror films so to speak, although I do not consider it as terrior, but if mystery, I mean "Stigmata".
STIGMATA
Stigmata is a movie from 1999, a mystery movie, very much in the style of the Exorcist, although I consider it much better than this one. A film full of mystery, possessions, messages, and investigation. A father and an atheist girl are the main characters of this story.
Plot:
The film tells the story of an atheist girl Frankie Paige who works in a hairdresser and leads a cheerful and disorderly life, the mother of this girl gives her a rosary which was stolen from a father who has died "Paulo Almeida" the latter was a Jesuit which was a stigma as it had the marks of jesucritst before his crucifixion. This girl of an ordinary day suddenly began to have the marks that Jesus Christ had, what the church calls "Stigmas", because of this event with the girl, this reaches the ears of the catholic church in the Vatican and sent to Father Andrew Kiernan which is a scientist who is responsible for investigating which are the false miracles, or which are true and which are not. In the investigation the girl begins to have all the stigmata that Christ had, besides that she also has several possessions, with which she leaves several messages written in the Aramaic language, which no longer exists in the world. The father is certain that the girl is possessed by the spirit of father "Almeida" and the messages that he has left written on the walls through the girl are part of a new gospel, which is alluded to as the gospel of St. Thomas.
Starring:
Patricia Arquette is the main protagonist, who plays the role of Frankie Paige, actor Gabriel Byrne is the father "Andrew Kiernan". These are the two main protagonists of this film. The truth is that the other actors go under the table, since the plot is centered on the roles of these two actors.
Release date:
The film was released on September 3, 1999, had a cost of 10 million dollars and collected 70 million dollars, so it was a success at the box office, with the have has become a cult movie having many fans of mystery films.
Director:
The director of the film is "Rupert Wainwrigh" who is also a screenwriter, before making stigmata, he worked on films like "The Sadness of Sex", Stigmata was his second film as a director, he also worked for tv directing series.
Producer:
The production of the film was in charge of "Barry Navidi" who is a renowned film producer, working on films of the renowned actor "Steven Seagal". His contribution to the film made Stigmata a hit mystery film today.
Screenwriter:
The screenplay for the movie was done by "Tom Lazarus" who is a writer and screenwriter for movies such as "The Ninth Gate" he has also written series such as "Star Trek: The Next Generation". The script for the movie is very well done focusing on the two main characters and their plots.
Soundtrack:
The music of the movie is composed by "Brian Eno" and partially by "Mark Wallis", his music gets us into the plot and makes the mystery and suspense overwhelm us. Brian is a musician of electronic music, among his best known is the soundtrack of the movie "28 Days Later".
Visual effects:
The film's effects were done by "Richard L. Edlund" and "David Packer". Richard is a renowned special effects designer and David is a make-up and visual effects designer. Their work can be seen in the movie "The Lost World: Jurassic Park".
Curious facts:
One of the curious data of the tape is that at no time explicit sexual scenes are seen. Something unusual in this type of mystery films.
Based on:
It is based on the book written by Peter Blatty in 1983, which was re-released in 2001. The book has the same name, tells the story of a girl to whom all these symptoms and wounds of Jesus Christ happen.
It is also inspired by the story of the medieval "Mystic Monk of the Blood" which is a popular folklore. The monk's name is St. Francis of Assisi.
Criticism:
The reviews are divided, as many say the film is a horror film, but others say it is a mystery with science fiction. Equally positive reviews for actress Patricia Arquette who did an extraordinary job. Despite all the negative reviews, because it has, the film is a success in the world of mystery films.
Opinion:
For me the film is a jewel of mystery cinema and if you want to put it as a horror film, of course it fits. The performances are great, the photography and the setting make the audience enter a surreal world of religion and rites and exorcisms, something we humans are not used to. The Vatican has many mysteries and in this film you can see the message that the Vatican has against the other messages that put on film the survival of the Catholic Church.
Conclusion:
To conclude I think the film is worth seeing, for example I am not a fan of horror or mystery movies and I love this film, so I recommend it, I like the photography, the setting, the scenery, the effects, the soundtrack, the performances, it is really a work of cinematic art and today is considered a cult film.
To finish I want to tell you that I recommend you to watch the movie, I hope you like the work and see you in a new post, a thousand blessings.
