Black phone
Black Phone.
A Blumhouse film - known for its aesthetic in the field of modern horror (and in general, in the most extreme cinema anyway), has given us some very nice and successful (objectively) franchises if I may say so, see Purge, Sinister , Insidious, Split, Hush, Black Christmas, some even with nice sequels (not all 😛 ).
The setting is in late 70's Denver, starring two brothers, one of whom is kidnapped by the iconic serial killer (no spoilers here, it's literally on the poster) played very strongly by Ethan Hawke, and the other has some supernatural abilities.
I won't go into too much detail, there's no need, it's a horror flick, but the setting alone could be something of an excuse for a coming of age ghost/horror story.
More we see the unfolding of the main characters and their own concerns, but also the social and non-position of all the characters - from the first-generation teenager of Japanese origin and baseball lover to the 17-year-old angry hair metal bully and of course the almost alcoholic father of the children. , also giving a certain illustration of that era.
Ok, obviously pretty superficial, although it does have a couple of really strong scenes that I honestly didn't expect to see (Madeleine McGraw stars, already has experience in Outcast as well as Ant Man).
As for the serial killer element, Hawk and the mask gimmick is very convincing, it's solid and just as, without being a caricature.
Some jump scares he had, ok they could be less predictable but they were fun.
Dericksson's direction, too, was spot on.
Let me say it again, well done to Stranger Things and the retro wave that emerged and gave us such beauties in theaters.
