Hugh Jackman Movies

The superhero frenzy is here, and it's strong, proving that investing seriously in this genre, unlike the 2000s, has paid off, despite the many pitfalls both in the ill-fated DCEU and the MCU.

However, the undeniable star of this frenzy is Hugh Jackman, who is objectively the greatest and most important superhero actor of the 21st century (and I time-limit this statement because, apart from Michael Keaton and Kevin Conroy's voice in the 90s, we also had the unique Adam West in the 60s and, of course, Christopher Reeve). The Australian clearly walked so that all those who came after him could run.

Beyond the success of the role, the first X-Men trilogy, and, well, the fact that he's a heartthrob, it was his acting talent and range that truly opened Hollywood's doors wide for him, leading him from the American market to worldwide fame.

However, it's important to look at his filmography, as it is particularly interesting and diverse. More importantly, it serves as massive proof that he is neither a one-trick actor nor afraid to take risks.

So, I've chosen my 3+2 most favorite... non-Logan roles of his, as, like I said, 2024 once again belongs to the down-under beast in terms of superhero films.

Prisoners (2013), Denis Villeneuve

Villeneuve is by far my favorite contemporary director. Prisoners is the film that marked his true artistic leap into the mainstream, with the unique Jackman-Gyllenhaal duo in the lead roles, and an equally impressive supporting cast featuring Viola Davis and Terrence Howard.

The Prestige (2006), Christopher Nolan

Sticking with mainstream cinema, let's move on to my favorite Nolan film and probably the best magician movie ever released. The cast is extraordinary, with the lead duo of Jackman and Bale resembling a thrilling Olympic fencing match for the gold, while Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, Rebecca Hall, and others also make appearances.

The Fountain (2006), Darren Aronofsky

Aronofsky is a love-it-or-hate-it director, something that is also reflected in his hit-or-miss films. However, this film is one where, although it's not my number one in his filmography, I can't understand how anyone could not be captivated by its narrative. Considering that 2006 also saw the release of the third installment of the first X-Men trilogy, this was a cinematic hat trick for Jackman.

Honorable Mentions:

Faraway Downs (2023), TV Mini Series

This is a more detailed, introspective retelling of Luhrmann's film Australia. Besides the opportunity to once again witness the acting tango between Nicole Kidman and Jackman, personally, as I'm not particularly thrilled by Luhrmann's cinema, this series fully satisfied me.

Movie 43 (2013)

Nothing more, just this. If you haven't seen this movie, you absolutely must, and be prepared for anything. If you have seen it, you understand.

Another cool one with this guy is Eddie The Eagle (2015), where he plays an American coach for a guy who’s trying to break his own barriers. An ideal movie for a relaxing weekend.
