Prometheus

It has all the qualities that make a movie from likable to good. Gorgeous cinematography, great artwork (classic Giger drawing cosmic horror aliens with sexual undertones), great direction (Ridley Scott doing what he does best) and great cast (Noomi Rapace, Fassbender, Idris Elba, et al).

It has countless references (more and less obvious) throughout the history of the cosmic horror-sci-fi genre. For reference, I should say that the spaceship and some of its equipment had aesthetics and design from 2001:Space Odyssey. Also, the whole concept of humanity discovering its creators who turn out to be monsters out to destroy us is a direct reference to the work of H.P. Lovecraft. Of the author, dld, who established cosmic horror as a genre and gave it the characteristics we enjoy to this day (a century later). And of course the obvious reference to Prometheus (the film's spaceship) coming to challenge the gods/creators to claim his destiny and the good of humanity.

Also, the film is terribly philosophical and attempts to pose the most basic existential questions, such as whether our existence is arbitrary or has a purpose. Questions that he doesn't even try to answer because as Fassbender says in the android role, it doesn't matter why we exist or why our creators want to destroy us. What matters is how we will live in a universe and a natural environment that is indifferent to our biological or cultural survival.

The film has soured a large section of the audience. Either because it didn't show enough of the classic animal of the alien franchise, or because it didn't provide answers to the existential questions it raised, or because it left gaps in the plot (it's the first part of a trilogy I'd say here). And in the end it ended up eating an unjustified crack and going into the drawer without being appreciated as it deserves.
