The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

Emily Rose, a young student whom science deems mentally ill and religion deems possessed, dies during an exorcism. An atheist lawyer takes on the task of defending the priest who performed the exorcism, who is charged with negligent homicide. The film is partially based on a true story and, while it's a 2005 horror film, it also evolves into a courtroom drama that, in my opinion, manages to stand out from others in the genre.

The direction is by Scott Derrickson, who later brought us The Black Phone, Doctor Strange, and Sinister. The Exorcism of Emily Rose actually came first and hinted at the meticulous filmmaking that would follow. It’s clear throughout the movie that Derrickson has studied the genre and tries to bring his own unique touch to set it apart.

It’s not particularly scary as a film, but I don’t think it even aims for that. What really gives you chills is the performance of lead actress Jennifer Carpenter. Overall, the acting is strong across the board — Laura Linney, for example, does a great job as the lawyer. The courtroom scenes are carefully crafted and subtly prompt you to question the guilt or innocence of the accused, all presented on a fairly realistic basis, which I really liked.

Perhaps due to the legal approach, the film takes on a more serious tone — but it works very well. The fact that it doesn’t take a clear stance might appeal to some, and put off others.

The film is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a young German woman who died in 1976 after failed exorcism attempts. Today, her grave has become a place of pilgrimage for Catholics who unofficially consider her a saint. That alone gave me chills. I believe the film is definitely worth your attention.
