The Mandalorian: Season 3
I have been into Star Wars since the original movie came out in 1977 and have seen all the subsequent movies. Mind you, I have not been as obsessive about it as some people. I have not read many of the books and have not seen all the animated versions. I have watched the recent The Bad Batch that is filling in some details of what happened between episodes three and four, but have not worked through all seven series of The Clone Wars. I saw some of that when my son watched them and caught up on the final season before watching The Bad Batch to get some context. In the last few years we have had several live-action series. The Madalorian was the first of these.
Possible spoilers below.
I just finished off season three. I was trying to avoid spoilers before I saw the finale, but it seems some people did not think much of it. I thought it wrapped things pretty well, but my expectation may be different to theirs. It started with main man DinDjarin being labelled an apostate to the Mandalorian creed for having removed his helmet. He has to go to Mandalore to redeem himself and that planet plays a big part in this season.
The season has a larger scale than previously with lots of Mandalorians from different factions. His Imperial foe Moff Gideon is still out there plotting.
The third episode had a bit of departure by taking us to capital planet Coruscant where former Imperial staff are being rehabilitated by the New Republic. There we meet a couple of characters we saw some time ago, but I struggled a little to remember exactly what part they played. Although interesting I felt this diversion did not add a lot to the story.
Another time they go to a wealthy planet where Jack Black and Lizzo are in charge with Christopher Lloyd running security. Lizzo took a shine to Grogu, aka The Child, aka Baby Yoda. Grogu has a fair bit of action this time as he has developed his force powers thanks to some training by Luke Skywalker (seen during The Book of Boba Fett).
The last couple of episodes set the scene for the climax that involves some big battles. I will not spoil the ending.
When they had scenes of lots of Manalorians zooming around with their jet packs I was reminded a bit of this classic. The effects are better now, but then they do not have Brian Blessed.
If you have the time you can watch loads of videos that analyse every detail of each episode pointing out references to other parts of the Star Wars canon. I do not see that as essential, but the producers obviously wanted to put in some treats for the real addicts. There were references to some characters who did not even appear on screen. Despite not knowing all that I enjoyed this season. It retains some humour, although some characters are just too earnest and some are a bit cheesy. It keeps moving along without getting too buried in details with lots of action in each episode. They must have had plenty of budget for effects. It will be interesting to see where they take it next, but before that we have more shows coming up. I think the next one is about Jedi Ahsoka, but there is also another series of animated stories in Star Wars Visions due in May the Fourth (appropriately). One of those is from Wallace and Grommit producers Aardman. Then there will be more movies with the first in late 2025.
I do wonder if you can have too much of a good thing. I know George Lucas had some plans beyond A New Hope, but could he have imagined it would go so far? Now Marvel have gone even further when it comes to number of movies, but then they had decades of comics to draw from. Now and then it is nice to watch something that stands on its own and is not a remake. At least we are getting value from our Disney+ subscription. At the weekend we watched Amsterdam which is a quirky period piece with some basis in history.
One constant of Star Wars are the Stormtroopers as cannon-fodder. They do seem to be there mainly to get killed and you have to wonder about their motivations. We did see a little of their background in The Force Awakens, but otherwise they barely register as actual people. I still think this fan film does them some justice.
Has Star Wars been a big thing in your life? Are you hungry for more?

Definitely we're craving for more stuff like that. Anxiously waiting for other part.
I think back in 1977 no body had an idea that this would turn so big and with this new trend of making tv series out of movie characters Disney is going to milk star wars so much, in the good way, the mandalorian for me is probably the best star wars tv series so far although I have only seen andor, book of bobafet and now mandalorian, i thought they where going to stop on season 3 but it seems more season are coming based on their twitter account comments, great post 😎
I've generally really enjoyed The Mandalorian. I thought Andor was really good too, but it had a different mood to it.

All in all this third season was good, I've read that many didn't like it, but I think it's more because they start filling themselves with expectations and crazy theories. I really liked the closure it was given, usually they are not usually happy closings. These Disney live action series are on the right track and I hope they keep squeezing Star Wars to the max. In the end, they won't always please everyone. As long as we get the good out of each product, that's fine with me.
You have the right avatar for a fan! I expect there are lots of discussions about what direction and style these shows will follow before they make them. There are all sorts of plots in the various media that they have to take into account, but some fans will still find fault. I just don't take it that seriously. It's all just entertainment in the end.

BEER.I love Troopers haha it's so well made and never fails to make me laugh!
Yeah, Stormtroopers have always gotten the shitty end of the stick, I'd love to have seen them shown as fanatics of some sort, where laying down their lives for the empire is seen as the highest honor or something like that, I think it could have been an interesting thing they could have explored in the sequel films.
Clone Wars - while it's a bit cringey at times - I found it really good, especially with the expansion to the galaxy and aliens, as well as humanising the clones. I wish we had more of that in the prequels to be honest.
I haven't finished Mando season 3, but was surprised when I heard people didn't like it. I was reading this catiously as I didn't want it spoiled, thanks for not doing that!
I'm looking forward to Asohka. I loved that final season of clone wars and how it shows more of her life leading up to order 66.
That era for me, is my favourite, those few years where the empire is seizing control and the clones are being phased out and replaced with normal non-clones. There's not a lot of stuff set in that era. Andor is set in that time though, and I loved it for being a bit more realistic and slower.
There are some amazing Star Wars games and books out there, I got into reading them for a while, then Disney bought it and erased it all from canon. The good thing about franchises is, you can choose your own head cannon, especially with something as big as Star Wars.

I like that it's not all just about Jedis. There's just too much for me to see it all though. There is a nostalgia aspect for me as I was just the right age when it all started.

BEER.I have never seen Flash Gordon but thanks to that YouTube video I might give it a try just to see some retro-stuff. Sci-fi’s come a long. It was strange for Disney to make so many books and comics no longer canon, but I guess they wanted to work off the cinematic nostalgia of Return of the Jedi and work from there. MCU has the advantage of decades worth of visual comics so I can see the difference there but a part of me still wants to see Luke and Han’s children duke it out with the Yuuzhan Vong. Plus, the Exar Kuhn War and the Mandalorian Wars need their own respective trilogies, because of the craziness that happens there.
Flash Gordon is pretty corny, but so were the old shows it was based on. Some of those were on TV when I was a kid.
I don't know who controls the whole Star Wars empire (small E) these days. I'm not so worried about what people consider definitive as long as it's entertaining.
That’s a good way to look at it. Plus, what’s canon and not doesn’t seem to be completely set in stone—blue guy Admiral Thrawn was brought back—so Star Wars Legends might just end up being good material for future inspiration. Speaking of being entertained, while Andor is set between prequels and original trilogy I found the drama of the rebellion’s origins quite fun. Really get to learn some details there that were nice to be explored.
I'm just finishing up a Star Wars book now, one of the first one's I've read.
Star Wars - Moving Target - A Princess Leia Adventure.
It's set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Really good reading so far, I'll do a book review in a couple of days.
I didn't read the entire post, I was worried about Spoilers. I'm looking forward to Season 3. I'll be renewing that subscription soon.
I've watched the movies, but not many of the spinoff series. I'm definitely not obsessed, but find the content entertaining. I'll probably read more of the books now, so far, I've enjoyed the one I'm reading now.
I have so many books to read anyway, so I have to be selective. I just like something entertaining to watch now and then.

BEERKING.The parady video at the end is funny! I loved Star Wars as a kid and they hold some nostaligc value, but these days the sci-fi genre in general has been done to death. I want to catch the new Dune series though, looks interesting.
I haven't seen the recent Dune movie year. I was into those books in my teens. I think there is still some original SF stuff out there, but movies can be so expensive to make so they go for commercial success.
