CineTV Contest | The Music Makes The Movie

I love music based movies, so when I read this week topic I was all in. However, there are soooo many of these movies it's hard to pick just one. So in this post I choose 3 movies I could watch again & again.

HairSpray 2007

Discrimination segregation integration & protest, this is the way of the world. It’s sad to say that these things are still happening everywhere. And in this movie it all takes place in Baltimore, MD, USA.

“Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show”. Source

It’s 1962 & when a full figure young girl gets her chance to be on the most popular dance show on air (The Corny Collins Show), her mother leaves the house for the first time in 10 years. She has to go out because her daughter gets a chance to be the spokesperson for a popular women’s clothing store for full figure women. She speaks to the owner as her daughters manager.

While the folks in charge try to keep the blacks separated from the whites, there’s something totally different going on in school. Tracy is sent to the in-school suspension class, where there is mostly black children, but they are having a good time dancing & singing. When Tracy joins in, everyone is gasping, like ‘who does this white chick think she is?’ they are soon dancing & singing together, something that would not be allowed in public.

Seaweed is a black guy who is a star on The Corny Collins Show along with his little sister Inez. Together with Tracy they take on changing the world of discrimination & segregation. Seaweed invites Tracy to his side of town where his mother & host on The Corny Collins Show on ‘Negro Day’.

It’s a big day on the show and Tracy has been in trouble over a protest & hasn’t been seen so they think she won’t make it to the show. The entire gang of tracy’s new found friends help to make her appear. It’s time to chose the yearly winner of the ‘Miss Teenage Hairspray’ and Tracy pulls off a performance you just wouldn’t believe and you’ll never believe who won. You’ll have to watch the video or the movie to see!

Soul Men 2008

Though it's been about twenty years since they have spoken with one another, two estranged soul-singing legends agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. Source

Nothing like a road trip for lots of adventure & fun. These two men hadn't seen each other in years. One made a pretty good life for himself & the other had some hard times. But when their band leader from years ago passes on, they agree to attend the funeral & perform at the Apollo which is several states away.

During this road trip, they stop at a few spots along the way & perform some old songs as practice to getting back on stage.

This is a couple of videos from the movie that I really enjoy.

During one of their hard times on the road, they pass through town where their female singer lived to discover she has passed. They meet her daughter who they realize that one of them is here father. They then ask her to join them on the trip.

After they bring Cleo on the road and she impresses Issac Hayes with her performance and she leaves for a job with him,
The funniest part is when Henderson finds out that he’s not Cleo’s father & hinds is. They fight & Cleo overhears their conversation & she leaves, they fight & Hinds & Henderson ends up in jail.

In the end they pull off the performance of a lifetime doing one of their greatest hits!

Annie 2014

Remake of the 1982 movie.

"A foster kid who lives with her mean foster mom sees her life change when business tycoon and New York City mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in." Source

Little orphan Annie……… a little girl in foster care & every week she waits outside a luxury restaurant where she last known her parents to be. She waits from after school til the restaurant closes. Then home to a mean & nasty foster mother who only does it for the money.

Annie is taken in by Mr. Stacks, a rich cell phone provider & mayoral candidate. It changes both of their lives forever.
