LAST TO MARRY (MOVIE REVIEW)
“It is when one chases a thousand that two would put ten thousand to flight!”
Written & produced by Laju Iren (also starring as the therapist/mentor), produced by Onome Agesse-Egbo and directed by Famous Odion Iraoya, is this Christian faith-based Nollywood drama “Last To Marry."
Abidemi (Juliana Ololade) is under immense pressure, especially from her mother to get married. Still celibate at 34 owing to her religious beliefs and moral uprightness or standing, her patience is growing thin.
She decides to take a bold step but is met with a huge disappointment even before she could summon as much courage. Will she ever find love? Will she eventually get married? What bold step did she take?
This was packed with powerful messages and lessons mostly for single ladies who are under societal and family pressures to find a spouse and get married like their very existence depends on it.
It is also a good watch for married couples, too, who may be experiencing some marital issues in their homes. They may be able to find clarity or trace some foundational problems watching this.
One lesson I particularly took from this movie is that being single is not a death sentence. See, the world will always talk. If only individuals can learn to silence the noise around them and focus on their goals, dreams, and aspirations…IF ONLY! But it’s easier said than done, right!?
Juliana did a great job interpreting that role. She embodied it like it was her personal story. It was believable and compelling.
The guy who played Amata (Bayo Royale) also did well in his character representation. Athough Amata made me upset that I wished I could go into my screen and deal with him.
Ifeanyi Kaluuuuu…dude is ever so cool and gentlemanly! Could he be this way in real life? I look out for his persona in all his movies. He often appears calm and peaceful and has this warmth to his demeanor.
The therapist/mentor is pretty, gosh…such a beautiful face she’s got! Loved how motherly she counseled Abidemi. For a moment there, I felt she was being unprofessional with her client as a result of her approach until it became clearer as to why.
While this was interesting, engaging, and relatable to watch, I found that some of the characters were not fully developed or established, which leaves viewers wondering who is who at some point till you get it.
A case in point here is the therapist/mentor who appeared at the last minute. Also, the ad at the end, though funny and catchy, it sort of took me unawares, and I was asking myself if it was a different movie or a continuation of the movie at hand.
The duration was quite impressive, albeit the sequencing of scenes didn’t make it appear so. Though short, it then seemed long, and some may find it boring as it wasn’t exactly exciting.
There are some other flaws here and there, but I love the ending and the cliffhanger. This was unpredictable. I loved how they left the voice at the last scene to our imagination.
On the whole, this was an amazing watch. Great picture quality, amazing sound, incredible lines apt for a Christian movie, a beautiful cast, and unforgettable life lessons…kudos to everyone involved in this production
This comes recommended at the rating of 5.5/10. You should see it.
