Junji Ito Maniac, one of the biggest disappointments I've seen. —eng/esp

Buenos días, tardes o noches, damas y caballeros. Como muchos sabrán o quizás no, depende de si me conoces o hayas leído alguna de mis reseñas, soy muy aficionado a todo lo que tenga que ver con el terror, desde muy pequeño crecí viendo películas de ese género debido a que técnicamente es un gusto inculcado por mi padre y no me quejo en lo absoluto, he visto muy buenas obras pero las más abundantes son las malas, por lo que hay que saber buscar si quieres ver algo de terror medianamente decente. Dentro del mundo del anime y manga es bien sabido que Junji Ito es uno de los maestros del terror, siendo considerados por algunos como el mejor, por lo tanto yo al ver que iban a sacar un anime donde iban a adaptar varias historias cortas sentí la inmediata necesidad de querer verlas, la verdad no sé el día exacto en el que se estrenó pero no fue hasta el día de hoy que me crucé con este anime recopilatorio (tengo entendido que habían sacado otra recopilación mucho antes de esta), por lo que decidí darle una probada. Así que sin más dilación hablemos un poco acerca de Junji Ito Maniac.

Good morning, afternoon, or evening, ladies and gentlemen. As many may know or perhaps not, depending on whether you know me or have read any of my reviews, I am very fond of everything related to horror. Since I was very young, I grew up watching movies of that genre because it is technically a taste instilled by my father and I have no complaints at all. I have seen very good works, but the most abundant ones are the bad ones, so you have to know where to look if you want to see something moderately decent in terms of horror. Within the world of anime and manga, it is well known that Junji Ito is one of the masters of horror, considered by some as the best. Therefore, when I saw that they were going to release an anime where they would adapt several short stories, I felt an immediate need to want to see them. I don't know the exact day of its premiere, but it wasn't until today that I came across this compilation anime (I understand that they had released another compilation long before this one), so I decided to give it a try. So without further ado, let's talk a little about Junji Ito Maniac.

En este caso no tendremos una historia lineal sino que nos enfrentamos a diferentes historias algunas más cortas (un capítulo puede abarcar dos historias totalmente diferentes) o largas que otras (el capítulo completo es dedicado a la misma), por ende encontramos también algunas de mejor calidad y otras que en mi opinión llegan a ser aburridas. El capítulo de entrada sin dudas no es de lo óptimo para comenzar, en realidad ni sé para qué la seleccionaron, no hay una verdadera sensación de miedo y termina siendo como algo más de comedia con ese final que le dan, en cierto punto se crea una tensión pero se esfuma. Aunque hay otros capítulos que considero genialidades como el de los globos colgantes que según tengo entendido son de los más fieles a la obra original, ese surrealismo de cabezas gigantes persiguiendo gente para suicidarlas para luego tener un final claustrofóbico donde nuestra protagonista está encerrada en su cuarto al borde del colapso por las constantes tentaciones de querer salir, es espléndido. Para mí ciertamente no hay punto intermedio, la última historia que vi me pareció pésima siendo ésta la de La habitación silenciosa, de verdad no sé si la adaptación no consigue plasmar bien la idea original o son cosas mías.

In this case we will not have a linear story but rather we face different stories, some shorter (a chapter can cover two completely different stories) or longer than others (the whole chapter is dedicated to the same one), therefore we also find some of better quality and others that in my opinion become boring. The first chapter is definitely not optimal to start with, actually I don't even know why they selected it, there is no real sense of fear and it ends up being more of a comedy with that ending they give it, at some point tension is created but it vanishes. Although there are other chapters that I consider masterpieces like the one with the hanging balloons that, as far as I understand, are among the most faithful to the original work, that surrealism of giant heads chasing people to force them to commit suicide and then having a claustrophobic ending where our protagonist is trapped in her room on the brink of collapse due to constant temptations to escape, it is splendid. For me, there is certainly no middle ground, the last story I saw seemed terrible to me, this one being The Silent Room, I really don't know if the adaptation fails to capture the original idea well or if it's just me.

He de confesar ante todos ustedes que realmente nunca me he leído los mangas de Junji Ito pero sí sé que tiene un estilo bastante característico con ese blanco y negro sucio con bordes gruesos, trata de dar un mensaje claro usando ese estilo, representando el bien y el mal con esos dos colores, quizás que le añadan color a esta obra para que sea transmitida en televisión (o bueno en Netflix) le quita el atractivo original, algo en blanco y negro daría un aspecto más oscuro que el colorido que tiene este anime. Tengo entendido que próximamente van a sacar una adaptación de Uzumaki, donde respetan esto, se utiliza el blanco y negro en todo momento y con el tráiler podemos observer ese aura oscura y tétrica que seguro nos mantendrá en más suspenso. Creo que de cierta forma entiendo a aquellos que dicen que Junji Ito nunca ha tenido una buena adaptación y es que con la forma en la que se maneja y el cómo luce sea algo difícil de adaptar debido a lo único que el dibujo pueda llegar a ser, yo definitivamente luego iré a leer el material original y es 100% seguro que será mejor que este anime recopilatorio.

I must confess to all of you that I have actually never read Junji Ito's mangas but I do know that he has a quite distinctive style with that dirty black and white with thick borders, trying to convey a clear message using that style, representing good and evil with those two colors. perhaps adding color to this work to be transmitted on television (or well on Netflix) takes away the original appeal, something in black and white would give a darker look than the colorful one that this anime has. I understand that soon they will release an adaptation of Uzumaki, where they respect this, black and white is used at all times and with the trailer we can observe that dark and eerie aura that will surely keep us in more suspense. I believe that in a way I understand those who say that Junji Ito has never had a good adaptation and it is because the way it is handled and how it looks could be difficult to adapt due to the uniqueness of the drawing, I will definitely go and read the original material later and it is 100% certain that it will be better than this compilation anime.

Creo que otro de los grandes fallos que tiene esta obra es la animación, sinceramente es muy sencilla haciendo que algunos elementos sean olvidables en el proceso, se siente plano y las escenas, todo lo que ocurre se siente irrelevante, fácilmente podrías olvidar cualquiera de las historias justo después de verlas pero bueno, que podemos esperar de Studio DEEN, buena fama no tiene y antes habían sacado otro recopilatorio con los mismos errores que este. Junji Ito siendo considerado como uno de los grandes maestros de terror a la par de Lovecraft o Stephen King, no merece esto, una obra donde casi me quedé dormido viéndola cuando se supone que debería de presenciar un suspenso constante o alguna pequeña sensación de terror, miren que el hecho de que un anime me aburra es bien difícil pero este durante momentos, dependiendo de la historia me causó eso. Otra crítica que tengo es que quizás algunas historias tienen un ritmo demasiado acelerado, no hay tensión en lo absoluto dando como resultado que el final sea un absoluto meh. Yo sinceramente no recomendaría esto, no vale la pena ni como introductorio, siento que da una mala impresión de Junji Ito como autor.

I think another big flaw this work has is the animation, honestly it's very simple, making some elements forgettable in the process, it feels flat and the scenes, everything that happens feels irrelevant, you could easily forget any of the stories right after watching them but well, what can we expect from Studio DEEN, it doesn't have a good reputation, and they had released another compilation with the same errors as this one before. Junji Ito being considered one of the great masters of horror alongside Lovecraft or Stephen King, doesn't deserve this, a work where I almost fell asleep watching it when I should be experiencing constant suspense or some small sensation of terror, it's quite difficult for an anime to bore me but this one, at moments depending on the story, caused me that. Another criticism I have is that maybe some stories have a too fast-paced rhythm, there is no tension at all resulting in the ending being just meh. I honestly wouldn't recommend this, it's not worth it as an introduction, I feel like it gives a bad impression of Junji Ito as an author.
