🎬 📹 The First Omen 🎬 📹
The First Omen just arrived on Disney+ and I need everyone to watch it. Even though I love horror movies, I watch them more for the technical prowess than to scare me, because it is true, horror movies are not scary, but at least, they achieve a bad feeling in the body and I find that very interesting to achieve. A good horror movie can scare you, but more than that, that fear that is achieved by a few seconds is not much, a good horror movie makes you uncomfortable from beginning to end and even afterwards, something that The First Omen achieves with great clarity.
The first Omen acaba de llegar a Disney+ y necesito que todo el mundo la vea. A pesar de que amo las películas de terror, las veo más por la proeza técnica que para asustarme, ya que es cierto, las películas de terror no dan miedo, pero por lo menos, logran una mala sensación en el cuerpo y eso me parece muy interesante de lograr. Una buena película de terror puede darte miedo, pero más que eso, ese miedo que se logra mediante unos ciertos segundos no es gran cosa, una buena película de terror te incomoda de principio a fin e incluso después, cosa que The First Omen logra con gran claridad.
The film, set in 1971, tells the story of novice Margaret, a newcomer to an orphanage for girls located in Rome and run by the church. However, within this orphanage, in the shadows, there is a sect that seeks to bring the antichrist to life in order to make people return to the church in search of a solution. An interesting plot that grabs you from the first minute and, being set in 1971, feels like a very classic film, like an indirect sequel to Rosmary's Baby or The Exorcist.
La película, ambientada en 1971, nos cuenta la historia de la novicia Margaret, una recién llegada a un orfanato para niñas ubicado en Roma y comandado por la iglesia. Sin embargo, dentro de este orfanato, entre las sombras, hay una secta que busca traer a la vida al anticristo para así hacer que la gente vuelva a la iglesia en busca de una solución. Una trama interesante que te atrapa desde el primer minuto y que, al estar ambientada en 1971, se siente como una película muy clásica, como una secuela indirecta del bebé de rosmary o el exorcista.
But a good plot is not enough, especially when it's a horror film and it's a somewhat cliché plot. That's why the film enchants with some really gorgeous shots and applaudable direction for young Arkasha Stevenson, who has an eye for showing beauty within horror in an incredible way, showing the hands of the “beast” as a clear reference to the endless number of movies about the devil that have been made throughout history.In addition, even if only for a thousandth of seconds, I find it impressive how the director decides to show and leave things to the imagination, showing for example, the demon's phallus, but not so explicit that someone who is not paying enough attention would understand. A difficult decision to make, but that is benefited by the atmosphere of the film and its pace that does not end up being slow but rather superb, with the perfect time to build a good horror story and at the same time develop a female character in a magnificent way.
Pero una buena trama no basta, sobre todo cuando es una película de terror y es una trama un tanto cliché. Por eso, la película encanta con unas tomas realmente preciosas y una dirección de aplaudir para la joven Arkasha Stevenson, quien tiene un ojo para mostrar la belleza dentro del terror de una forma increíble, mostrando las manos de la “bestia” como una clara referencia al sinfín de películas acerca del diablo que se han hecho a lo largo de la historia. Además, aunque sea por una milésima de segundos, me parece impresionante como la directora decide a su vez, mostrar y dejar a la imaginación las cosas, mostrando por ejemplo, el falo del demonio, pero no tan explicitó como para que alguien que no esté prestando la suficiente atención entienda. Una decisión difícil de tomar, pero que se ve beneficiada por la atmosfera de la película y su ritmo que no termina de ser lento sino más bien soberbio, con el tiempo perfecto para construir una buena historia de terror y a su vez desarrollar un personaje femenino de una forma magnifica.
Then, (and spoiler here, sorry) the scene where the water breaks and the childbirth begins is simply a marvel. If I was already liking the movie too much simply for its badassery, with that scene the movie for me became one of the best horror movies of the decade, possibly of the history. So much that it works as a way to criticize the church, as a way to show a political context, as a horror story and as a call to femininity; a film that is worth it for both horror lovers and film lovers as such, showing, again, that horror is not just jumpscares and ghosts to the madness.
Entonces, (y haciendo spoiler aquí, disculpen) la escena dónde se rompe fuente y empieza el parto es simplemente una maravilla. Si la película simplemente por su mal rollo ya me estaba gustando demasiado, con esa escena la película para mí se convirtió en una de las mejores películas de terror de la década, posiblemente de la historia. Tanto que funciona como una forma de criticar a la iglesia, como mostrar un contexto político, como historia de terror y como llamado a la feminidad; una película que vale la pena tanto para los amantes del terror como para los amantes del cine como tal, mostrando, otra vez, que el terror no son solo jumpscares y fantasmas a lo loco.

I thoroughly agree with this: "the film enchants with some really gorgeous shots and applaudable direction for young Arkasha Stevenson, who has an eye for showing beauty within horror in an incredible way..." I was very impressed with all that.
Regarding the plot, I realized I would need to watch it again sometime in conjunction with the original Omen movie to be able to assess the quality of it in a more comprehensive way, so to speak.
