MABOROSHI --- another spectacular film by Mari Okada <3
Several weeks back, I reviewed a very heartwarming movie named Maquia and I found it pretty unique in terms of plot and was really interesting to watch. Last night, I watched another movie from the same writer and director which is entitled, "Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Koujou", better known as MABOROSHI.

The title Alice and Therese's Illusion Factory but it doesn't really have anything to do with the story, well except the illusion factory part. I've read threads regarding where the names Alice and Therese come from (because they weren't in the movie), and according to some posts, it's a pun from Aristotle or characters from the writers other novel.
Anyway, let's focus on the MABOROSHI part. haha

One night, in a small town in the countryside called Mifuse, a huge explosion at their town's steel mill occurred which made the townspeople trapped and away from the rest of the world. Not only was the town isolated, but for some reasons, time stopped in this certain place. Nobody ages... the kids remain kids, adults remain adults. There was even on pregnant woman who remained pregnant for years following the explosion.

For the main character, Kakuiri Masamume, and the other youngsters in the town believed that returning to the real world is nothing but an illusion. They have become numb and accustomed to the emptiness. They live their lives day by day without any hope of change.

However, his life in stasis changed when one of his classmates Sagami Mutsumi took him to the fifth furnace of the steel mill where he was introduced to a young girl who he would describe as a wolf. Meeting her ignited the flame of light which would somehow erase the darkness of his current reality.

Perhaps you can sense from the trailer how awesome the animation is. Well, it's as expected from MAPPA. :) The effects, the art style, and even the music... they're all phenomenal.
I'm not a huge fan of romance, but if romance involves a lot of other elements like the ones portrayed in the film, then I wouldn't mind. A lot of people commented how difficult the plot to understand is, but for someone who enjoys complicated plots, this is truly a masterpiece! ^^
I love complicated plots with sense. If you just try to understand the story well, you'll see how awesome it actually is. I also enjoyed how it touched people mentally and psychologically. In such sense, there's realism in this story despite it being set in a fantasy world.
I personally enjoyed it and would definitely want to watch it again! If you're into this kind of movies, feel free to watch... that is, if you still haven't. :) Thanks for reading this post and see you around! (^^,)/

Just as you say, the animation is outstanding, the trailer proves it. Another attraction I see is the way the plot is laid out, although I guess I'll understand the best of this story by watching the movie.

STOPJust now that I'm in a period of watching movies, this recommendation is very useful for me. I'm not a fan of romanticism either but the animation looks very top notch, typical MAPPA stuff. I will definitely add it to the list, it could be very interesting!

I saw this movie just because of the animation. When I found out what study encouraged her life the week it came out. The story is fascinating, the characters are very well done and I love the soundtrack too. The plot twist at the end left me crazy, honestly. I loved it.

The premise of a small town trapped in time after an explosion at a steel plant sounds very intriguing. I like how you describe the situation of the inhabitants, who have become apathetic and accustomed to living in this distorted reality.... You've definitely left me wanting to see this movie. At first, I was confused on what the story is about...but got curious along the way till the scene where they tried their best to return the kid/girl (sorry I have memory problem)...then it got me. 😭. Though I have problems with my memory, I think it has a positive side: I get to enjoy watching an anime the 2nd time around and still feel like it's the first time I watched it 😂
Hahaha... yes, the plot was quite confusing, but it's a good one! And the climax was indeed touching and exciting. :)
