Intrusion(2021) || A Psychological Thriller
Strangely, I woke up earlier than usual this morning. So, to get myself back to sleep, I thought it was wise to see a psychological thriller as most psychological thrillers are boring and could put anyone to sleep immediately. Little did I know that I chose the wrong film for that purpose as I was completely sucked in from start to finish. Although it began slowly, I was hooked at the subtle suspense in the first scenes.
Starring Freida Pinto and Logan Marshall-Green, the film, Intrusion offers a mix of domestic mystery and psychological unease.
Synopsis
The story centers around Meera (Freida Pinto), a cancer survivor and her architect husband, Henry (Logan Marshall-Green), who move into a lavish, secluded home he designed. Their seemingly idyllic life takes a dark turn when their house is broken into. This leaves Meera deeply shaken. But as she begins to unravel the mystery behind the break-in, she discovers shocking secrets that question everything she thought she knew about her husband and their life together.
My Review and Rating
First things first, I'll give it to the cinematographer of this film. They did a great job as the cinematography stands out as one of the film's strongest aspects. In all honesty, it's actually what helped heighten the suspense that had me hooked to my screen.
Also, the modern, isolated house serves as a character of its own, with its sleek design clashing against the undercurrents of dread. Freida Pinto really delivers a commendable performance as Meera. She effectively portrays her growing paranoia and vulnerability. Logan Marshall-Green’s portrayal of Henry brings a sense of ambiguity. I never guessed about his true motives as he seemed too much of an ideal husband to be the bad guy.
One thing I like so much about this film is how it builds its suspense gradually, and the initial break-in scene is genuinely tense. It helps set the stage for Meera's spiraling sense of unease. Also, the exploration of trust and betrayal in Meera and Henry's marriage adds an emotional layer to the film even if it felt underdeveloped sometimes.
I also like that I wasn't able to guess my way through this one. I was genuinely surprised with the twists and turns.
One of the film’s biggest flaw in my opinion is in the supporting characters. They are underutilized, and the lack of depth in their arcs weakens the overall tension. I wanted more drama from them because they seemed very important to the plot. Terminating them all immediately was disappointing.
All in all, Intrusion, directed by Adam Salky is a visually polished and narratively deep thriller. It’s a watchable film with moments of tension. You'll especially love Meera for her braveness and for not choosing love over justice.
