I'm really not the type of person to uphold the unspoken tradition of watching cringe Christmas movies during the festive season. Most times I find these types of movies repetitive, loud and annoying. Perhaps I'm the grinch of Christmas movies in that sense.
Still, I'm not totally a joyless person that hates Christmas. I love Christmas and the feeling that comes with it. In fact, I love Christmas so much that sometimes I allow myself sit through the soul-consuming cringe that many Christmas movies are, lol. This Christmas, I did just that by seeing the 2022 musical/comedy starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds titled "Spirited".
So, is this film a good watch or just another abundant supply of cringe? Let's find out.

In a freshly imagined version of the afterlife, every year spirits are recruited and work to change a person for the better just in time for Christmas. Whenever I watch these types of movies, I always wonder how the world would look like if it was a huge musical. I would just be going about my day and then I would be mystically forced to sing and dance along to someone's made up song with lyrics that I know somehow as instruments play from God knows where. It's the type of world that does not even work in theory and it's probably why I don't like musicals very much.
Before seeing this film, I didn't know it was a musical. I thought it would just be a Christmas comedy because I recognized the stars on the poster. To my horror, the characters began to sing just minutes into the film which is when I realized what I had gotten myself into. However, I must say that the film was not that bad.
Yes this movie comes off as a bit childish and silly but that's how it's supposed to be. It's just something fun to watch.

This film is a modern version of the popular Charles Dickens story "The Christmas Carol" that involves the three Christmas spirits. I don't know a lot about the story but, just like everyone else, I have some knowledge because of how popular this story has become within the past few centuries. On the little knowledge I have, I like the detailing done on the ghost of Jacob Marley. I also like that the movie tries to honor the original story by taking us back to the time of the greedy Scrooge and relating him to Briggs.
The two main characters were well casted to deliver on this film. I am little biased because I always like Ryan Reynolds but I think he was perfect in this film. He plays the character of Clint Briggs and not only was he a very convincing mean guy, he was also really funny to watch. He's the main reason I decided to see this movie and he delivered expertly.
I'm not a big Will Ferrell fan because I have not seen many of his movies but I know that he is a renowned actor and comedian. To be honest, I was not very impressed with his performance in this movie. He is funny for sure but sometimes his character comes off as a little forced. Still, it was not so bad and the chemistry between him and Reynolds was just ok.

This movie may have been cringey to watch because of all the singing but I'll admit that some of the songs were catchy. There's one of them that won't leave my head and it's a little annoying but I'll shamelessly admit that like the tune. The film is also one that will make you laugh hard as long as you can keep up with the jokes.
In general, the movie is quite wholesome. It does not quite fit into the Christmas category of movies that you can watch with the family but you can decide that at your own discretion.
I'll give this film a score of 7.5/10.
