2037 MOVIE REVIEW
Do you also sometimes feel stuck or not when choosing what to watch to lift your mood? Lately, I seem to have lost a lot of interest in what to watch. Maybe it's because I'm bored, or because I'm too busy with my daily routine. However, since it's the end of the week, and I don't have anything to do, I finally accepted a recommendation from my friend.
The story begins with a small family consisting of a mother and her teenage daughter. Kyung Sook (Kim Ji-young) is a widow with a speech impediment, who has to live her limited life as a small-time seamstress. While her daughter, Yoon-Young (Hoong Ye-ji) is a high school teenager who decided to quit school because she had to pay for her family's debts due to Yoon-Young's late father's hospital treatment.
Unfortunately, a male employee at Kyung Sook's workplace feels sexually attracted to her daughter (Yoon Young), so one night when Yoon Young is on her way home from work, the male employee launches an action to rape Yoon Young in a bush.
Yoon-Young, who was still conscious from the tragic incident, immediately picked up a stone and killed the rapist. From here, Yoon-Young received a five-year criminal charge.
The tragic fate did not end until the temporary verdict from the court, Yoon Young, had to endure a lot of sadness when it was discovered that she was pregnant with the child of the rape. Fortunately, she found friends on the sidelines who became her new family and looked after Yoon Young during her detention. 2037 is the detention and social security number for defendant Yoon-Young.
- Yoon-Young (Hong Ye-ji)
Being the youngest inmate in the women's prison, Yoon-Young, who was originally a hardworking, cheerful, and optimistic girl, spontaneously turned into a moody, quiet, and desperate girl. Several times she tried to end her life, which fortunately was always caught by her cellmates.
However, Yoon-Young consistently plays the role of an adaptable character from the beginning to the end, until later, she becomes the newest cellmate and is loved by all the members.
- Kyung Sook (Kim Ji-Young)
Just like mothers in general, Kyung Sook is also a figure who continues to work hard with all her limitations, especially she recommends that Yoon-Young stop working and continue her schooling with focus and good. Yoon-Young is a gentle figure who loves her daughter very much, she wants to study hard so that she can speak even though it is not clear.
- Soon Je (Kim Mi-Hwa)
One of Yoon-Yooung's cellmates who is very influential is Soon Je. Soon is a death row inmate who becomes the wisest man and becomes a shelter for other cell members if there are prisoners who want to be evil with the residents of cell no.10.
Soon Je is very good at playing a wise figure while knowing how to act to be a protector for his friends. Soon Je loves Yoon-Young very much.
- Li Ra (Hwang Suk Jung)
Li Ra is the oldest member after Soon Je. Convicted for being a pimp, and because of her past life, Li Ra had to lose her uterus, and was unable to have offspring. Therefore, Li Ra became the most enthusiastic member to welcome the birth of Yoon Young's baby.
- Seon Su (Shin Eun Jung)
The only character who has a different uniform is Seon Su or Hae Soo. She wears a bright pink prison uniform, not because she wants to be different herself, but because she is a prisoner for being diligent. Seon Su is initially an ignorant character, however, over time, she becomes a figure who hangs on to Yoon-Young. He lives the character of a smart prisoner and reads books diligently, even his favourite book is given to Yoon-Young so that it can be an entertainment for Yoon-Young.
- Jang Mi/Rose (Jeon So-Min)
I see Jeon So-Min as herself who is always beautiful and charming. Here, her acting looks very natural. She plays Rose who was convicted for stealing the property of the man she was dating. Tookoh Rose who is described as coquettish really attracts a lot of men, so it becomes her opportunity to commit theft.
Rose is a very outspoken character, even so, she also loves Yoon-Young as much as anyone else.
- Yoo Sa-Rang (Yoon Mi-Kyung)
Another very boold character is Sa Rang, played by newcomer Yoon Mi-Kyung. Sa Rang is described as an explosive character who cannot control her emotions. Sa Rang is the most introverted character. This is because she feels she has been abandoned by her family so she always feels inadequate to be accepted by others.
Even since Yooo-Young's first arrival as a cell resident, Sa Rang has been the harshest and most unaccepting, however, behind her harsh nature, she is a woman with a soft heart. At the last second of baby Yoon-Young's birth, Sa Rang even made a toy from the fruit of her own hands.
A neat plot, characterisation that doesn't disappoint, and even perfect character development, for me this film deserves an 8/10. However, 2037 only gets a 6.6/10 rating on IMdb. But, again, it's a matter of taste.
The packaging is what I think it is. Yooon Yooung getting an appeal court for a prison term decision is like a second chance for his young age.
This film is very touching, and there are many good lessons to be learned outside the context of being a criminal. If this weekend you don't have any recommendations on what film to watch, 2037 is highly recommended to be on your watch list. Enjoy your weekend with a delicious cup of sweet popcorn!
